Granny’s Symbolism

Granny finds symbolism in everything and I mean EVERYTHING. When I was growing up her symbolism got on my last nerve. I mean who would see a flower had five petals and note that there were five of us too?

Granny looked for signs in everyday occurrences and always pointed them out. That drove me crazy too. I thought it was so corny and old fashioned.

There’s a funny commercial right now, I can’t remember what they’re trying to sell, but the hook of the ad is that the people are turning into their parents.

In recent years I’ve realized there are many things I do because Pap and Granny did them. Some of them are mundane, others make up the very bedrock of my life.

Tuesday will make five months that Granny has been gone from this ole world. I miss her so much. We all do.

At some point in my life I adopted Granny’s propensity for symbolism.

There were five in my immediate family growing up.

There was three children in Granny and Pap’s family.

Granny and Pap have five grandchildren.

Mine and Matt’s family unit was four people for a long time, but now there are seven of us.

Like Granny I find myself noticing the numbers that represent my family in all it’s variations. I look for them in everything from the number of steps in a set of stairs to the number of deer in a field.
