Flower Butter

August 3, 2026

block of butter on plate with flowers

I’ve eaten butter mixed with honey, syrup, and jelly all my life. I’ve also eaten it mixed with garlic. I had never eaten butter mixed with flowers until a few weeks ago.

You may have seen the video of my friend teaching me to make sourdough bread, pesto, and flower butter. If you missed it you can find it here.

The compound flower butter was the easiest thing we made. The hardest step was walking around the yard picking edible flowers, but that was so much fun it wasn’t like work.

I set the butter out that morning so it was at room temperature. Kayla mixed the flower and herb blooms we gathered into the butter.

With a little elbow grease it didn’t take long to incorporate them.

I wasn’t prepared for how good the butter was. I assumed it would be pretty but figured it wouldn’t have much taste. I was wrong!

It was so good! There was the floral notes of the flowers the creaminess of the butter and the sharpness of the herbs. It was delicious after a few hours in the fridge, but it was even better the next day. And it was indeed pretty!

We ate it on bread but I imagine it would be very good on other things like pancakes and baked potatoes.

Everyone in the house deemed it good.

Last night’s video: A Bad Storm & the First Pineapple Tomato.

  1. I enjoyed the video. That was a great Sourdough masterclass. I will try to pick flowers next year. Mt neighbor sprayed and killed everything this year. I keep everyone here and up Wilson Holler in my prayers. I thank you all for keeping me, my son, Ed, and my sister Nancy in your prayers. It means so much. Love y’all.

  2. Randy, so glad you managed to visit your wife’s & daughter’s graves. What a testimony of beautiful love you had for both of them. I’ll soon be 75 & I visit my son’s grave as often as I can since it is about a 30 minute drive (just over the Mississippi line into Alabama). I hope I can continue to visit his grave. I’ll do my best if I have to crawl out of the car & crawl all the way to his grave. Praying for you, Tipper & family & all the acorns in need of prayer. Sending everyone love from Mississippi

  3. You might consider me an oddball but I don’t eat butter. I do put it in recipes and fry with it sometimes but as far as melting and pouring it on food or smearing it on other food, I don’t do that. I don’t put it on pancakes or mix it with surp.
My mother made naturally cultured cream butter and sold it when I was a kid. People would beat down the door to get her butter. But, I wouldn’t eat it!
I do drink buttermilk but only the nonfat kind, so buttermilk with no butter.

  4. God hold all his children close today. Keeping each of you in prayer. The flower butter is beautiful. My dad always mixed his honey, jelly, jams and syrups with butter. A hot biscuit with some honey and butter is pretty special. Prayers for strength, comfort and healing for all here in need.

  5. This butter looks so pretty and I am sure it tastes just as good. I have made honey/cinnamon butter and garlic butter with herbs, but not flower butter. That pineapple tomato Matt ate in your video last evening looked so delicious. I just love yellow tomatoes. Have a great day everyone and prayers for everyone here who asked for them.

  6. I want to thank everyone for your prayers and caring comments. I made it and spent time at her and my daughter’s graves and made it back home. It was tough but I know if it was the other way around she would have came for me. I bought a used rollolater (something like that) a few months ago at a thrift store. It has been a blessing and life saver in helping me get around like this morning.

  7. That butter looks delicious! You learned a lot in your class at the folk school & Kayla has been so kind to show you even more ways to use garden plants.

  8. looks like I’m not going to get to talk to the doctor until September 2nd, that is a long ways off, just to discuss my test results, God helping Jesus name, God bless Matt’s father Papaw Tony with deliverance from sickness and disease in Jesus name

    1. Norman, does your doctor have a “patient portal” that lets you read test results online? Our doctors do. You sign up, sign in, and get reports and appointment summaries. The office staff can tell you about it if it is available.

      1. yes but they told me I needed to see the doctor , I don’t know what all that stuff means, going to be September 2nd, I got patient portal, there are some things just won’t tell you

  9. Tipper we love watching your and Matt’s and the Twins show. We literally watch it everyday alot throughout the day. You discussed your Golden Milk we had discovered it last winter. We use the same ingredients except for the syrup we use honey. We love drinking it especially in the winter before bedtime. We also love watching you cook and when you make your cornbread I always say boy I’d love a piece of that with butter. My Mother made cornbread everyday and it reminds me of her. May she RIP
Thank you for listening to me ramble on

  10. Hmmm I wonder if bees could lead folks to the best choices? I know they like sourwood, holly and corn, Queen Anne’s lace could be a good size and maybe with a mild carroty taste but might be hard to clean. Elderberry is similar. Anyway, you do come up with the most unusual things to try and see. After all, for a great long time before there were synthetics there were naturals. We do need to rediscover them. Then we can wonder why we ever “took up with” the industrial version.

  11. Good morning & a beautiful, cool morning it is here in West Central IL. I’m coming out of the “ick” caused by the nausea meds from the treatment. They are both a blessing and a curse lol Today I’m looking forward to getting back to my regular “schedule”
My dearest friend and I have been having Saturday breakfasts together for about 15 years and since I missed it Saturday, we’re going to get our visit in today. I got her interested in gardening a couple of years ago by sharing my bounty and being so excited to get back into the dirt each spring. She always assumed she couldn’t grow or manage a garden but jumped in with gusto this year. She was doing a pretty good job but had to be gone for a week, helping her elderly mom and some varmints got into her patch. Since I’m having a bumper crop, I’m happy to share with her and her family and like all gardeners, we’re developing a plan for next year. I’ve encouraged her to come sit a spell and Celebrate Appalachia. When she sees where you and Matt started out by making more flat space in your yard and enriching your soil, she’ll see she’s already got a head start in the gardening game.

Randy, my condolences as you make your trip to visit your wife. Tomorrow is the 5 year mark from when my mom and aunt were taken from us in a fatal car wreck down in FL. Knowing they didn’t suffer and that my mom never had to go to a nursing home (a thing that caused her great anxiety) is my only solace. I send prayers of comfort to you and a hope that a flood of the best memories wash over you as you spend time with her♡

    1. Kim, it has been 5 years ( April 15th, 2021) since my wife passed. Between the time we dated and marriage we were together 50 years, she died from blood clot during heart surgery. The only comfort I find is in thinking it may have saved her from something worse down the road, she had already had several scares with cancer.

  12. Sounds like it would be good. While living in the Tampa Bay area Diane and I loved to eat at the many Cuban restaurants in the area. Most of them served butter mixed with green olives, really good. Diane has made it since the.

  13. I live flavored butters and look forward to making my own! I’ve registered for next years class in May. I’m SO excited!

  14. I think the flower butter sounds delicious, interesting and very palatable. Just think if we would have lived 100 years ago, we would all probably be familiar with flowers in food-especially desserts and butter. I think I read nasturtium is edible and I’d say you found lots of tasty herbs and flowers around your yard. It sounds like a wonderful and enjoyable time you had. It looks like I will be living alone because I got rid of my roommate who’s totally pathetic. I can’t live without peace nor with a jerk for there’s never peace only acceptance of behavior that’s immature and intolerable. Heave ho, he had to go!!! I’m looking forward to this new chapter unencumbered by a grown foolish adult. There’s so much to this (more than I can share) and it’s a long time in coming, but I’m relieved more than anything at this time. Pray for me yall. I’m going to be fine. I’m too old for bs plain and simple… Have a blessed day all of you!

  15. There’s all sorts of edible flowers you can probably do this with, but some are probably better made into tisanes, you would think, and some are probably better just as is, added into a salad. That said, mixing them in with the butter sounds like a way of adding them to some dish you would melt butter into.

  16. I have never heard of anyone doing this. I only know of mixing butter in sorghum syrup and molasses. Today would be my wife’s birthday, I intend to go spend time at her grave, it will be hard for me to walk from my car to her grave but somehow I will get there. Sometimes I feel like it won’t be long before I join her. So far we have not had any storms and very little rain but pretty fare chance for rest of week after today.

    1. Me to, Randy, about not so long now. As I think you noted once, you and I are the same age but you have had more sorrow that me – so far. A friend sent me a rainfall map a few days ago for that last round of storms that passed north of us. I looked especially for your area and saw it was light again though surrounded by heavier rain on all sides. I know that is very frustrating and you feel for all the farmers in your area. About today, your dedication to your wife and daughters sets an example of enduring love that is good to see and know.
