This weekend is the date for the annual Mountain Folk Festival held at Berea College in KY. The girls and I didn’t get to go this year, but we’re thinking about all our friends and wishing we and our dancing shoes were there too. Hope you enjoy this post from the Blind Pig Archives, it’s from Mountain Folk Festival 2011.
The Mountain Folk Festival really is all about the dancing just like the founders wanted it to be. The festival days usually start at 8:00 a.m. and the dancing is still going strong at 8:00 p.m. at night. The kids are amazing, their attitudes are positive, they are eager to learn, and most of them seem to absolutely love the dancing.
Here’s a quick peek of a few different types of dancing, including the Gisburn Processional-courtesy of Old Red Barn Co.
Looks like fun doesn’t it? One of my favorite parts of the festival is show off time. Since the kids participating in the festival come from a variety of locations, they are allowed to show off the type of dancing they are most familiar with.
In our case, it’s Clogging. Instead of going it alone this year Chitter and Chatter had 2 of their clogging team-mates there to dance with them. There was a minor problem with their music, but they still brought the house down with their stomping.
Now that’s what I call dancing! Hope you enjoyed the videos. What type of dancing are you most familiar with?
Tipper
My grandpa started me out clogging when I was 10. He to me to the Jackson Co Jamboree, and I was hooked. I told him I want me some of them clackin’ shoes! LOL Great memories.
That man worked so hard to keep me busy. It wasn’t till I was 14 that I figured out his process of having me keep the concrete on his porch completely wet with a mop. It’s impossible and he knew it, but it did keep me very busy trying. 🙂
Tipper,
Since I don’t do Facebook or any of
the other stuff, I decided to type
in my insertion window: #2 You
Ought to be Here with Me. Chitter
and Chatter and Paul does such a
nice job with this song and many
others…Ken
Just had to post this…
the better half just came in the house with a basket of 39 Morel mushrooms, some call Hickory chickens!…they are soaked, washed and draining to fry and put some in the freezer…he said he left about 15 to 25 small ones…Our not picking all the first few years is helping to spread the spores under the old apple trees….LOL
Wish you were here dancing with us this weekend!
Tipper,
I’ve watched Chitter and Chatter
do their cloggin’ routine since they were little and loved every
minute of it. I’ll bet they are a
big hit at Young Harris today.
I guess those girls taught me what I know about clogging just watching them perform. Thanks for sharing all these years…Ken
Sorry you had to miss this event, but the tape gives you and your family good memories. This was great!
Tipper,
Some reruns one could just watch over and over, and this is one of those. I really think I get my exercise just watching those girls dance!
I love all traditional mountain dance of our forefathers…Buck dancing, flatfoot, back step, square dancing and clogging. Of course, around these parts of E. TN we see more clogging…Also love the mountain country two-step!
I just wish I could dance again!
Thanks Tipper,
PS…Hope you ‘all have fun at the story telling festival in GA.
Oh my goodness, the girls look so much younger there!
