riddles-from-Appalachia

I’m sharing a riddle from Blind Pig Reader Kenneth Roper.

“What has 2 hookers
2 lookers, four stiff-standers,
and a switch-about?”

The last riddle I shared was from Blind Pig Reader Ann Applegarth. More than a few of you figured out the answer to it-which was “that.”

Railroad crossing!
Look out for the cars!
Now can you spell that
without any Rs?

  1. Tipper–The answer Ken is almost certainly expecting is a cow (and that fits the specs). However, so do nanny goats and indeed any ungulates which have horns–Cape Buffalo, caribou, chamois, etc.

  2. Tipper,
I guess Mama is lookin’ down, thinking that her youngest son remembering, that she told me and Harold years ago.

When she’d go to milk “ole Gurnesy”, we’d go with her to carry her buckets. When we got there, she’d turn one upside down and sit on it. Me and Harold would grab a tit and commenced to squirten’ milk all over the place. Mama didn’t have but one good Right arm. (She had a Stroke in her Left side when I was about 3 months old and left her paralyzed.) But she taught us that Riddle.

Someone came to our house, sometime back, and told Mama he had a milking cow for $50.00 and said she could pay for the cow over time. Well, Mama didn’t draw but $14 or 15 dollars a month as
a Government Check, but within a year she got him paid. That was a Lot at the time for poor folks and in Appalachia anyways. But we had Love in our Family and I wouldn’t take nothing for it. …Ken

  3. A cow with horns. I’ve had lots of experience with both ends — the front when she didn’t want me near her calf and the switch while milking.

  4. I was guessing all along the way, until I got to the last line. Is it a quilt frame? You got me, Ken Roper!

  5. Sad to say, but my coffee let me down this morning. Until I wake up good, I have to work with half a brain. The first part seems like eye glasses, but I will be looking forward to learning the correct answer. Meanwhile, I guess I need to prepare my day for the heat wave we are having.
