Miss Cindy

Miss Cindy and The Deer Hunter

My mother n law Miss Cindy has been my biggest fan since the very first blog post I wrote way back in 2008. She’s been here to cheer me on at every milestone I’ve made over the years and in fact she is the very reason the blog is named Blind Pig and The Acorn. You can read more about that here.

Those of you who are long time readers will have noticed the daily comments she’s left on posts since I first started blogging have disappeared. In fact several of you have commented that you missed reading her always insightful contributions and hoped that she was okay.

Miss Cindy has been dealing with illness for the last few months. We all, including her, thought it was the beginning stages of dementia.

Not wanting to put any additional pressure on Miss Cindy I refrained from writing about her sickness for fear she’d read it and feel worse than she already did about her rapidly disappearing grasp on the world.

Miss Cindy has been the literal definition of the old saying healthy as a horse. At 76 years of age she takes no medications other than vitamins and has visited the gym for a daily work out for many years until recently. So even her doctor thought the issues were likely caused by some sort of dementia.

This week we found out it isn’t dementia after all, it is brain cancer. There is likely cancer elsewhere in her body that has metastasized and spread to other areas including her brain.

The medication prescribed to reduce the swelling in her brain has amazingly brought some clarity back to her already. She’s been a trooper through all this turmoil yielding immediately to any suggestion we made, often joking that she knows she’s losing her marbles.

After this week’s diagnosis Matt said “You haven’t lost your marbles they’ve only been moved to one side.” I’m thankful for the release of tension that humor brings during this turbulent time. I know it helps Miss Cindy and it surely helps us. We’ve always been a family that laughs and jokes a lot.

We go for the first oncologist appointment next week. Her doctor has not sugar coated anything for us. Miss Cindy’s prognosis doesn’t look good in fact it looks downright bleak. If you’re a praying person we’ll certainly be grateful for your prayers as we wade across what’s been laid before us.

  5. Haven’t been commenting in a while, as I took a break from a lot of internet stuff during Lent (& just plain busy now), but did want to say I will be praying for your MIL, as well. Sometimes just KNOWING that someone else is praying for you does wonders. Hubby & I were talking about prayer lists the other night. Seems ours are getting longer & longer. We have quite a few folks that we are worried about & I told him that I honestly fall asleep sometimes before I can get thru the whole list. So I try to pop the most urgent ones to the top first. A lot of the folks we pray for have self inflicted their troubles on themselves, but with an illness like this…..try to trust in the Dr.s & pray they have discernment on what to do & that Miss Cindy/family has discernment on what to accept.

  6. just watched your daughters video about Miss Cindy..heartbreaking…I will keep all of you guys in prayer.. especially Miss Cindy….God is a present help in a time of trouble and He will provide for you…He knows what you need….

  9. I have also been missing Miss Cindy’s posts and have always enjoyed them. I have added Miss Cindy to my prayer list. We will pray for a miracle, and healing, and for strength to face the days to come. Just remember, you all are loved like family, even though we’ve never met. We are part of the Blind Pig family, just the same. My love and prayers to all of you.

  10. Like many other readers, I always look for Miss Cindy’s comments, and have for all the many years I’ve been a Blind Pig reader. Tipper, thank you for sharing this. I’m a big believer in “where there’s life, there’s hope,” and also the value of 2nd (medical) opinions. I’ve always thought of faith as a gift, and that is so clear from all the comments here. My thoughts are with you all.

  11. Tipper, I am sorry to hear about Miss Cindy. She always seems so together. I have had cancer and so as many others in my family most of us have survived some have not. Cancer is not an easy thing to deal with it often leaves you with a deep sadness and a multitude of questions. I will hold Her and her entire family up in prayer. Although its not easy, I found staying in prayer is for sure the first line of defense and strength. Prayers for all of you.

  12. May God’s grace bless Miss Cindy and all the family with His care, comfort, and peace, Tipper. These are not easy moments in life. Over here, my “adoptive mother,” whom I call my second mother, passed on Home, last Wednesday, at age 93. (That’s my “adopted family” in Missouri.) The sixth anniversary of my mother-in-law’s passing was yesterday. The heavenly circle is unbroken. Y’all are in my thoughts and prayers.

  13. It appears Cindy’s diagnosis has mobilized an army of praying people. God can, and never won’t hear the prayers of his people. Praying His power, grace and mercy be extended to her and the entire family. Praise the Name of the LORD.

  14. Tipper, I am so very sad to read this. I remember meeting Muss Cindy, and she was a delight. Sending my love, prayers, light, and good energy to all of you as you travel this difficult road with your dear mother-in-law.

  17. O I hate to hear this Tipper. I will surly keep her in my prayers. Bless her heart. As I had told you earlier my cousin has cancer through out her body. Her brain included. ( Cancer is a beast) Tipper if I had Miss Cindy’s address I would send her a card. Matter of fact if we all did it might cheer her up.

  18. All of you have been on my mind since I read this blog yesterday. I hope that you will be able to celebrate, honor and preserve the memories of Miss Cindy’s life here and on your channel for as long as she is able to participate, which I pray will be a long time.

  19. Miss Cindy is a lovely person through and through. God bless her and keep her safe and well. I pray that your family will have the faith and strength to overcome the challenges you face. 23. Oh Tipper, I am so very to hear this about Miss Cindy. I will be praying for her. I know prayers work because, as you know I have survived stage 3 ovarian cancer. It will be 3 years this June. As I told you by e-mail, it was God and my parents in heaven that got me through it. It is very important for her to keep a positive attitude. It wasn’t easy, in fact I had some very hard days but I pushed on, I had to. If you or Miss Cindy ever need to talk please don’t hesitate to contact me. God Bless you all.

  24. I, along with many of your readers will be praying for Ms. Cindy and your whole family during this difficult time.

  25. Tipper,
I am putting Miss Cindy on the prayer list at church tomorrow. Prayer helps. Be sure to remember
all the great times you had with her and that your daughters got to know and love her.
Charles’ mother had liver cancer. My dad had colon cancer. My first cousin also had colon cancer.
All of my father’s mother’s family had cancer. It is a terrible disease. It robbed so many of my family
of seeing their grandchildren grow up. Be thankful that Miss Cindy was able to see the girls grow into
successful women and all the wonderful things she did and said. I will always treasure the things she wrote on your blog.
Check to see if her medical provider can get her in a clinical trial that introduces polio into cancer.
Now it has a 50% success rate of total remission.
Please tell Cindy that she will have a bunch of Presbyterians praying for her.
    Much love,
    Kathy Patterson

  26. So very sorry to hear this sad news about Miss Cindy. Prayers for you Tipper, Matt, Katie, Corie and the entire family, especially Miss Cindy for strength, courage and comfort during this difficult time. Praying for healing and a miracle. God bless and keep all of you.

  27. Tipper,
I’m so sorry about Miss Cindy’s diagnosis. I will certainly be praying for her. I’ll also be praying you, Matt and the entire family. we have no way of knowing what we’ll have to face before we leave this world. In January 2022 I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The oral medication I take is doing great. The medication is supposed to be effective approximately one year, but God has nade it work 16 months and counting. I see my Oncologist once each month and my blood work is good. He, Dr. Jeffery Thomas, Athens, Ga, is totally surprised by our results. So God is definitely involved in my situation. Tell Miss Cindy to pray and that there’s Hope as long as God is on His Throne. I was hospitalized in February, 2022 for 17 days and it was really rough but God had other plans and I’m still here. Please pray for me. I love y’all. 4/29/2023 near Athens, Georgia

  29. I am so very sorry to read this. I have missed Miss Cindy’s comments, at first thinking she was on vacation somewhere, then imagining her computer was being repaired. My heart is with her, and all the family. I sincerely miss her wonderful and very supportive comments. Having read them for the last fifteen years, she has become family to me. I am praying for comfort, peace, strength, and healing. I know the emotions first hand, twelve years ago I was told I had three years to live at the most. Please know my heart is truly with you, Miss Cindy.

    Donna. : )

  33. Thanks Tipper for letting us know about Miss Cindy and give us an opportunity to pray for her. We have certainly missed her witty and wise comments. We assumed she had taken a trip maybe out of the country.. or was extremely busy as we all get from time to time.

We are so sorry to hear about her diagnosis. We will definitely pray for her daily as well as Matt, you, & the girls. We firmly believe in the healing power of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is no respecter of persons. What He does for one, He will do for another. We will pray for grace and strength to be multiplied to your whole family. We look forward to the day Miss Cindy will once again feel well enough to post a comment. She truly is your greatest fan.

  34. I will remember Miss Cindy, her medical team and this initial appointment next week, Matt and the whole family in my prayers. Three verses that I cling to when hard things come my way, Psalm 16:8, Psalm 91:1, Psalm 125: 1, 2. I echo the prayers for healing, the LORD’s strength, His wisdom and hope. May He make His presence known and especially close in these coming days.

  37. Oh no! My heart aches for Miss Cindy & your family. I will certainly add her to my nightly prayers & your entire family. Pastor Lon was saying the other day on his video that change can happen to us on a dime, and that is so true. Even more reason for us all to enjoy each day & praise the Lord for another day.

  49. Miss Cindy – I am so sorry you are having to go through this cancer ordeal. Your comments have always brought great joy to me. On my busy days, when I only have time to read one comment, I scroll down to find yours. You are always so supportive and positive. It’s as if I can feel your bright light, shining through your words. The wisdom you give is a treasure. And when you tell Tipper “you go girl”, it always brings a great big smile to my face! I will be sending my love and prayers to you and the family each day.

  58. Thank you for sharing this with us. We are honored by it and by the opportunity to help bear you all up in this valley. Truly if we could we would spare all those we care about from sorrow. But our heart knows that troubles are not just a waste in the ordinances of heaven. Please let us know of specific ways, beyond praying, that we can help.

  59. I am so sorry, and I will be praying for Miss Cindy and the entire family as you rally around and help her. Blessings to you all during this tough road ahead.

  60. I have been missing Miss Cindy’s comments and hoped she was off on some far away vacation without the internet. Keep the faith as we all pray she will be blessed with a miracle. I prayed before I wrote this and it will not be my last prayer for Miss Cindy.

    1. I really love this photo of Miss Cindy and Matt on the lake. I always thought, the few photos I’ve seen, that she was a pretty older lady. It’s fun to see her as a young woman, so youthful and happy.

I hate to hear this news. I did notice you took er fish the other evening when y’all cooked. Im glad you did, I know she enjoyed it. It’s the little things in life that are important.

I have to say, this gave me a huge pause as I read your words. I could feel my heart drop and my soul sink slowly. It makes us, as it should, realize how quickly life can change and fleeting it is. Ive been giving away things and preparing for what’s next for the last 10 years. I lost my husband and decided I couldn’t take it with me one day, so I’ve been on a journey of rehoming antiques and “things”, that we spent a lifetime accumulating. Im only in my mid 50s now, and I feel the very definite finality of time.

I will pray for Miss Cindy (and all her marbles).

  61. Dear Lord, please be with Miss Cindy today as she begins a difficult and fearful journey with cancer. Also, be with her loved ones as they care for her through this.

May you embrace this family with your compassion, love, grace and mercy to sustain and comfort them.

May your promises like “I will never leave you or forsake you” and “your mercies are new every morning” uphold them.

    Thank you and Amen!

  62. Oh, I am so sorry to hear this! Life is so full of difficult trials. She and you all have my prayers.

  63. Tipper,
I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and I will definitely pray for Miss Cindy, Matt and all family members. I pray that the family will experience, “a peace that passes understanding” during the coming trying times.

  66. We can identify with your pain and we know the One in whom you trust is faithful and is helping you through all that lies ahead. We will keep all of you in our prayers. He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think.

  67. I had missed Miss Cindy’s comments, but thought it was because on comment threads one doesn’t always see them all. I always enjoyed the comments I did see that Miss Cindy made, they were always so insightful. I’m very sorry to read Miss Cindy is going through all this and she as well as Matt, you and all the family will be in my prayers.

  68. That’s a tough row to hoe, but she certainly seems to have the absolute best supporting family there can be. Wishing the best for her, Matt, you and all.

  69. I’m praying for a miracle healing. God bless Miss Cindy, Matt, and the rest of you all.
Mark 11:23 (English Standard Version) “Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.”

  70. So very sorry to hear this sad news! I will be praying for Miss Cindy and your whole family during this difficult time. God is able!!

Your Celebrating Appalachia and Blind Pig families will be supporting and praying for all of you and especially Miss Cindy.

  72. I will pray for Miss Cindy and the rest of the family. One of my precious sister in laws passed away in 2016 at the age of 62 due to a very rare brain disease. We were told only 335 cases were known about in the world. At the beginning, we too thought it was dementia.

  73. Lord God almighty in Jesus name I ask you to bless Ms. Cindy with love care and protection,
i ask for healing and health for her , I ask you Lord to bless those that she loves and bless those that love her, God’s ways are not our ways, we ask you Lord for comfort and peace of your will for Cindy, we pray these things in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior, Amen I’m so sorry for her and for you Tipper and Matt May our prayers be answered, God help!!!

My heart goes out to you Tipper and Matt; my prayers and thoughts with you all. Love, Hugs and Blessings…. Ann

  82. Tipper, I’m so sorry to hear this and your family have all my prayers. In this odd digital world where we get to know people in far flung places, I’ve never met Miss Cindy “irl” (as the kids say) but I’ve always enjoyed her sharp comments and she’s always been kind and thoughtful when I’ve had something in BP.

My family is thinking about your family.

  83. Oh no, I’m so sorry you all. This valley you are entering is a tough one but the Lord will lead as he promised.

I will be praying for Miss Cindy for comfort and peace and comfort to all of the family.

Love from a sister in Christ

    Lunda

  84. Please read JOSHUA 1:9-13. Don’t just read it, absorb it until you have 100% faith in all it says. I will pray for Miss Cindy’s full recovery and where there is life, there is hope. I’ve not been here too long, but I too have noticed some thing is amiss in the comment section. My sadness upon hearing this goes with you, but so does love and support by way of praying and speaking health. The photo you shared of Miss Cindy and Deer Hunter is beautiful indeed! She has always been a lovely and very beautiful lady, as her photos reveal and Deer Hunter was just an adorable baby! My heart goes out to you this morning and may you be comforted by the WRITTEN WORD which is alive and as sharper than any saber.

  85. I am truly sorry for your family. Please know I will add Miss Cindy’s name to my prayer list as well as the rest of your family. God is good and will provide what you all need.
God bless you all during this difficult time.

  88. Oh, Tipper, I’m so sorry for the difficult news your family has been dealt. I’ll most definitely be praying for Miss Cindy, Matt, you, the girls, and the whole family. Thankfully, you all know Who’s holding Miss Cindy, and all of you, safely in His hand. There can be no greater comfort.

Thank you for sharing this with us. May God, the Creator and Sustainer of all life, bring all of you His perfect peace during this transition.

    Darlene

  89. I am so sorry to hear this. I have enjoyed Miss Cindy’s comments for years now.
praying for her and you all

  90. I am so sorry to hear this! Miss Cindy and your family are in my prayers! My uncle’s mother has a cancerous brain tumor and has a couple of months left. Thankfully she knows the Lord and is at peace with her prognosis. He is our hope, comfort, peace and strength, and I know He’s holding Miss Cindy, and your whole family, in His loving arms!

  91. So sorry to hear about Miss Cindy! Will definitely keep her in my prayers. My cousin had this diagnosis over a year ago and went through radiation and then immunotherapy. The doctor has been amazed and told her he thought he would lose her more than once. Don’t give up, miracles do happen.

  92. I hate to hear of this diagnosis. I always enjoy her posts and know that she is a wonderful person to have in your life. Prayers of peace, comfort, and direction as you all navigate this time.

  93. Tipper, you and your family certainly have prayers from Concord, NC. We love you all like family even though we’ve never met. God has you in the palm of His healing hand.

Trust in our Lord to provide all you need. We will be praying for Miss Cindy.

  96. so sorry to hear your sad news regarding Miss Cindy. our thoughts and prayers go out to you all.

    1. I am so sorry for what Miss Cindy is going through but glad she knows now what she she is dealing with. I will continue to lift her up in prayer (and you all). This verse has always helped and comforted me: Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

  97. The slogan, Bling Pig, is a slogan first introduced to me by my Husband back in the 50’s…I know, a long time ago. That is one of the reasons you got ‘the’ acorn. As far as Miss Cindy goes, I love the picture of her and Matt years ago, such a gem to treasure. No doubt she and you and the rest of your families will be in my prayers. The big ‘C’ sucks, but put it mildly, to the victim and her relatives and friends. I lost my Mother about 26 years ago and to this day, when I want to share something I experience, I think about calling her to share it with. You are well away that God has his hands in this, as is all things, so the only thing I can add is, we have to rely on Him to get you guys through. As always, please tell Granny hello and you can for sure add Miss Cindy to that.

  98. I will add Miss Cindy to my prayer list. So sorry she is going through this. I pray God will give her peace and comfort as she goes through this trying journey
