I’ve been thinking about love during the last several weeks because I knew Valentine’s Day was coming up.
As I’ve told you before we don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day so that wasn’t what had the subject on my mind.
I guess it all started back last summer.
A few weeks after I interviewed Granny for my YouTube Channel, she told me she wanted me to film her talking about how her and Pap met. Of course I was all up for that.
We did a quick video one day just before I took her to the doctor. Even though I knew the story of how Pap and Granny met, hearing her tell it really moved me.
I decided to save her love story for Valentine’s Day so as it got closer and closer I kept thinking about the events she shared in the video—events that resulted in me being here in this amazing world.
Mostly I’ve been studying on how wonderful long lived love is. Don’t get me wrong there’s nothing more exciting and exuberant than a new love, yet there’s something so solid and endearing about love that stands the test of time like Granny and Pap’s did.
Seems like the girls picked up on my studying brain waves.
They’ve been singing the old George Jones song “Same Old Me” written by Paul Overstreet around the house for the last week or so.
I hope you enjoyed the song! The last line “if I go before you to that home on high darling I’ll be waiting just beyond the sky” reminds me just a few days before Pap died he told Granny he’d be waiting on the other side of the river for her.

One of my favorite songs that you do is “Working on a Building” Chitter’s voice is perfectly pitched for that high blue grass kind of sound, and Paul’s guitar riffs sometimes sound a lot like Doc Watson, especially when he sorta “bends” the notes. Thank you very much for all your music.

The 26th of March will be my anniversary. It used to be mine and my wife’s but she took off on me. March 25th is the 3rd anniversary of the day she left me for another man, a dear friend of ours. You might have heard of him. His name is Jesus Christ. But I am happy that she’s gone! Looking at what our world has become I wouldn’t want her here. Imagining what she it looking at now, I certainly wouldn’t!
What a wonderful song! My husband and I just celebrated our fifty second anniversary and that song reminded me of us. You two ‘songbirds’ just made my day.❤

My husband loved to hear George Jones sing. I think the girls did a great job on that song. I’ve probably mentioned before my husband passed after our 52 anniversary, and there is no way that a person really understands the loss, unless they have been through it themselves. That song made me think back over 50 some years ago when I met my husband. Beautiful memories!!

The sentence about Pap telling Granny he would be waiting for her makes me think about my mother in law when she was told told she didn’t have much longer to live. The first words she said was it won’t be long until I go to Heaven and get to be with Curtis again. They married as teenagers and were married for around 63 years before her husband died. To me their marriage was a perfect example of how God wants or intended for a marriage to be. They were each other’s best friend, partner and helper all their lives. If they were ever mad or upset with one another you never knew it.
Thanks for the Valentine’s serenade girls. Sharon and I will soon have our 47th anniversary and I’m still the same ole me, except probably moreso. I am more like myself than I am like anybody else and that is a good thing. But it is smart for a guy songwriter and guy singer to make the other party “sweet you”. It would not ever do to say ‘same old you’!
We had red cardinals in the yard this morning for Valentines. But they have not started calling “what cheer” or “pretty, pretty, pretty” yet.

George Jones( the possum) was a really down to earth and humble man. He and his wife Nancy really knew how to throw a Christmas party. Every attendee got a nice gift that came. When Possum got busted for a DUI ( actually he drove his truck into a bridge) Nancy took his keys away, but you’d see him going down the main road of Franklin, TN on his John Deere mower because Possum wasn’t a man to give an ultimatum… It was Possum Jones, Bosephus, and the Man in black who all lived side by side there. Possum lived a full life and died a Christian. Happy Valentines Day to all the time tested lovers out there!!!
