blueberry-cobbler

My blueberry bushes have done so good this year! I’ve been picking blueberries for several weeks and expect to be picking them a few weeks from now. With my bounty added to the gift of blueberries Miss Cindy got for me (she knows blueberries are my favorite!) I needed a way to use up some of the fruit so I went in search of recipes and found this one for blueberry cobbler.

The easy recipe is very similar to Granny’s peach cobbler recipe so I figured it would be good and it was-the recipe is definitely a keeper.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 1/4 cup sugar (you’ll use it for two different steps so divide it)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cup blueberries

Grease a 9 x 9 baking dish (I don’t have a 9 x 9 dish so I used the closest thing I had-a rectangular glass casserole dish and it worked fine)

Stir together flour and 1 cup of sugar. Add in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Mix well.

Pour batter into your prepared baking dish and sprinkle the blueberries on top. Sprinkle the remaining sugar over the blueberries and bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or until done.

If you’d like to print the recipe for future use-jump over to the site where I found it and print from there.

  1. My mother used to make cobbler but used no sugar. We added sugar and milk or sometimes cream. Most of the time we used blackberries, raspberries or peaches as the fruit.

  3. This is the recipe I call Cuppa, Cuppa, Cuppa and I use peaches or any kind of fruit and do not put the extra 1/4 cup of sugar on top. Sometimes I’ll cook the fruit a little to get some juice before I put in casserole. Oh so good.

  4. I made it! It was a little sweet for me. I’m not much of a sweet eater though. I think I baked it too long and the sugar candified. Missy loved it. She is taking the rest of it by Dusty and Sarah’s house. I know they will love it too.

Candified? I couldn’t think of anything else to call it.

  5. My blueberries were finished by mid July. We put 10 – 12 gallons in the freezer each year. My recipe is similar but I put the berries in a food bag with a couple spoons of flour, shake them to coat and pour them in the pan first. Then Pour themixture of flour, butter etc over them and bake. The flour coating keeps them from bursting while cooking.

  6. I ain’t got no blueberries but that looks so good I bleve I’ll just go buy me some and make me one too! I’ve got all the rest of the ingrediments to make it. I bet a scoop of viniller ice cream on top might make it even better. Er even chocolate?Whatcha think? Er maybe some whupped cream and a big blueberry on top?
I think I gained 8 lbs just thinking about it!

  7. Tipper,
I made a blueberry cobbler one time when you posted about it. My Jack Russel even liked it. His name was Topper and he had nerves of steel. (One night he went up on the Mountain to see what all them coyotes were hollering about, and about 12 of them ate him.) I keep a gun loaded and by the door ever since, in case I happen to see one. But they’re smart and won’t come into the light.

Anyway, ole Topper liked Blueberry Cobbler almost as much as me. …Ken

  8. Tipper,
Have you ever made a Blueberry Buckle, Grunt, Slump or Crisp….the name Grunt if barely familiar to me, I remember my grandmother on my Dads side calling a fruit dessert made/baked on top of the stove…a Grunt..That was years ago so my memory of this maybe wrong…I have so many cookbooks and read them more than cook from them that the term may be getting mixed up with my memory of long ago…I’ve made Apple Crisp..and most of my Cobblers like they have buckled…LOL
Your recipe today is the very one I use to make Blueberry and Peach cobbler…we love them both…Thanks for posting…

Have you started drying your apples for those holiday Stack Cakes or those delicious fried pies…I could eat a fried pie right now with my breakfast coffee…why I’d even take an apple fritter…
Thanks for this post today…our cloudy day makes one want to bake…

  9. My blueberries have come and gone. I did not plant them and actually we struggle with using them as fast as they ripen. The birds love them of course and just barely tolerate us having any.

Picking ‘blueberries’ (or maybe huckleberries, I can’t keep them straight) is a treasured childhood memory. My Grandma had some locations she would walk to and pick them. My brother and I lived with her for a couple of years and that was part of our summer ’rounds’.

I wish I had plants of the ones we called “box huckleberry” to plant as a ground cover. They are low-growing with dark evergreen leaves, pretty white flowers and dark blue berries. They grow in large beds on the clifftops of the Cumberland Plateau country through KY, TN and probably down to Sand Mountain Alabama.

  10. I love blueberries and blueberry cobbler. They don’t grow well in this area for some reason, so I listened to others and never tried to raise them. It’s been said that folks who eat lots of blueberries have improved memory and brain function. Another reason I should plant a big patch.

  11. Lately my comments haven’t been showing up, but I’ll try this one more time because I can’t not say something about that mouth-watering picture! I love blueberries, and have just one highbush that struggles to get enough sun and to survive the goats who always seem to head straight for it whenever one of them squeezes through the gate when I have my hands full. Even in the dead of winter, they’ll head for it – I think it’s just because they know it’s the one thing I am desperate to preserve, so it must be especially delicious!

    1. Please don’t stop making comments. Your’s are particularly interesting to many other readers. Just write in your comment, fill in your name and email, then hit Post Comment. You won’t see it right away but when Tipper moderates it it will show up just like before. Works for me anyway!

      1. Well thank you so much, Ed – I never imagined anyone was particularly interested in my wordy replies, but I’m tickled to hear you say so! I guess I’ll just keep putting in my two-cents-worth 🙂

  12. I made a blueberry cobbler just yesterday! There is as n Organic blueberry farm north of us that has the biggest sweetest berries. None growing wile anymore.

  13. That was one of the first things we did when we moved to our new house back in 03, was plant some blueberry bushes and now they are over head tall and I need to prune them this year, Blueberries are our favorite also, and this looks delicious.
