Many years ago on a dark and misty night near the top of Bent Mountain, the Ford children, who lived in the Old Home Place at the time, were startled awake by the frantic screams of someone yelling “Help Me, They Done Got Me!”.  As you know, the Old Home Place was located very close to the family cemetery.  It seems there was a demented woman visiting someone who lived in the farm lands. On this particular dark and foggy evening, this woman decided that she needed to visit the Caperton cemetery and pound stakes into the graves. No one knows why she believed this needed to be done, as far as we know there might have been a few eccentrics in the family, but no vampires or werewolves that we are aware of.

Barbara and the other children along with all of the adults in ear shot on the mountain, ran out to see what all of the commotion was about.

What they saw when they reached the gates scared them to death – a woman was frantically trying to leave the cemetery – but appeared to be stuck at one of the graves and couldn’t escape!

I bet a million thoughts ran through the little minds of the Ford children while they watched this desperate woman grow more and more hysterical. I also bet the kids thought she was going to be pulled down into the cold, hard earth – never to be seen again.

I suppose one of the adults in the group had the presence of mind to open the gate and see if they offer some help – or maybe at least keep the poor demented woman from dying an early death at the hands of a ghost.

Imagine the relief that went through the crowd when they realized the reason the woman was stuck at the grave was because she accidentally impaled her skirt with a stake.

Ha-now that’s a good story! I hope you enjoyed Laurie’s tale as much as I did. It reminded me of a humorous ghost story I heard as a child-you can go here to read it.

  3. Tipper,
    I really enjoyed Laurie’s story
“The Stake in the Grave. I kept
thinking her dress might be hung
on a headstone, never thoughy about her nailing her own dress to the ground. Love them stories from the Pride of West Virginia…Ken

  4. Our home in Georgia was directly next door to the old, Davis family graveyard. There were graves there (adults and children) that predated the War Between the States.
One Halloween, one of our backdoor neighbors’ cats escaped. Sure ’nuff, Spooky (yep, that was his name) went right up the largest oak in the cemetary. Now, this cemetary was on a rise so you couldn’t see the graves from the road. Anyone driving by (or coming down the rise opposite) could only see the trees, but everyone knew it was a graveyard.
So, here are Michelle, Bob, Jim and me all in the graveyard with flashlights up into the tree calling Spooky’s name tryin’ to get him down. Just so happens, there were a group of kids trick-or-treatin’ coming down the hill opposite. Guess they took one look at the lights in the graveyard and hearin us call Spooky. Next thing we know, there’s screamin’, cryin’, and the sound of kids poundin’ back up the hill.
    Never had trick-or-treaters again.

  5. Tipper,
and Laurie…sounds like the old woman almost staked out her own grave…LOL…
Thanks for a funny twist on a spooky Halloween story…..

  6. classic song for spooky october…
    Eli Renfro killed his wife
With a long sharp bowie knife
Hacked her up and put her in the ground
Death by hanging was to be his fate
And old Eli filled with hate
Put a curse on the entire town
    Chorus:
Can’t you hear, can’t you hear
When the moon is bright and clear
    From time to time
    It’s old Eli dragging chains
    And moaning peoples names
And I hope and I pray that he never thinks of mine
I was walking the high road late last night
The stars were out and the moon was bright
The wind was blowing you could hear for half a mile
Then an awful sound came through the trees
It chilled my blood and it shook my knees
The kinda thing that makes a man run wild
    [ Chorus ]
Well if you get home before I do
Don’t look back cause I’m coming through
I’m packing my things and I’m headed far away
They say you can’t run away from a curse
Maybe this time I’ll be the first
Ain’t nobody here gonna make me stay

  7. I love this story. We have the grave of the original German settler on our land- right behind our house. We love having Old Daniel out there and talk to him every day- wishing him a good morning and good night. So far, he hasn’t answered back.

  8. Well that was a very unexpected story for such a spooky story! LOL
Thanks Laurie and the Pride of West Virginia.

  9. Great story – and one of the few “ghost stories” that I can believe! I always remember being told a ghostly tale by an old man, it concerned a young woman being visited by the ghost of her lover. The story ended with the ghost walking out through the bedroom wall “…and that were a silly thing ter do ‘cos it were an upstairs bedroom – if that ol’ ghost ‘adn’t already bin dead Oi’m sure the fall woulda killed ‘im!”
