Our gardens are definitely on their way out. We’ve pulled up a few things and Matt’s itching to pull up the rest of it and be done with this year’s garden.
Although the harvesting has slowed we are still eating from the garden.
Our tomatoes are still coming in and the cucumbers although scraggily are still producing here and there. Peas and peppers are still producing. The Malabar spinach will continue to grow until the first hard frost. And we have arsh potatoes aplenty. I hope there are sweet taters under all the vines but we haven’t checked yet.
For the last few years we’ve started Juliet tomatoes but had no success actually growing them. Last week I was surprised to see a volunteer Juliet tomato growing just outside of the new blackberry bed we made this year. I knew the plant was there but didn’t realize what kind of tomato it was till I seen the red globes of goodness shining through the green.
We still haven’t planted anything for fall. Time is about to get away from us.
Matt said we could till the area where we had peas growing and plant a few fall things there. Hopefully we can get that done this week.

Taurus: good for all root crops and above ground crops 1, 2, 28, 29.
Cancer: best for planting above ground and root crops 5, 6.
Scorpio: best for flowers and above ground crops 14, 15.
Pisces: good for planting and transplanting above ground crops, trees and shrubbery 23, 24, 25.

Great job Miss Tipper, on your vlog. Prayers up for all those in need of God’s mercies. Hello to all the Acorns. It is so sad for the gardeners that had a tough year this season, Last year and so on. Will be praying this fall, winter and always, for God to hear our pleas for a much better garden season this coming year and in the future.I have been praying for our wonderful springs and summers that I remember as a child and young person. That’s been awhile now, but I know it wasn’t like a burning pit as long and often as it gets these days. God continue to bless all those who had better gardens and yields from them, may He continue to bless each and every one of His children and believers. Amen

Hi Tipper and Acorns. TY for the planting dates Sept 23-25 to move my lilacs. Maybe they will do for providing sade fror the trailer next summer and beyond. I keep everyone here, Papaw Tony and Nana and up the folks up Wilson Holler in my prayers. TY all for remembering Ed and Me. My Sister Nancy is doing great, better every day. Summer is hanging on here this week. Back to the 90s with wretched humidity. I have some seedlings started for the fall and went to the garden center yesterday to get a couple of things. It has been so hot and dry, I am concerned about fall plantings and the local garden center always has some really nice fall greens, so I picked up a few to try and have a “little extra help” :). Thanks for the September planting days. I will remain hopeful! Prayers for healing for all who continue to suffer.
I doubled the size of my garden by moving my 6 x 6 greenhouse down to the lower part of the yard, it’s not a giant garden but it keeps me busy. Close to the hose so water isn’t an issue. A couple weeks ago I started giant red mustard, dinosaur kale, collards, red cabbage and dandelions. I went to tractor supply and got brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. I’ll be doing three different types of onions, rainbow carrots, two different types of radish, bok choy and sorrel here in a little bit.
Planted fall planting of cukes here in SoCal yesterday. I have a 5×5 bed ready to plant radishes, turnips, carrots, arugula and Swiss chard. I’ve been waiting on the weather to cool. The fall crop of tomatoes and zucchini are starting to set fruit. October still remains our best month for planting.
My garden was a bit disappointing this year but I had no trees to shade anything and the sun beat my plants to literal death. Im glad to see yours has done well, Tipper. It helps to have help too. My tomatoes are ripening a month later than usual this year because the rainy days delayed planting. That’s all I’ve got left in my puny garden. I was calculating the number of days until the average first frost date to decide if I should plant turnips this late. October 10th seems so far away, especially since the hottest temperatures of the summer are upon us this week.
I read Debbie’s post last week about the benefits of corn silk tea and wondered why I had never heard that! A quick Google provided a wealth of information that came at a good time since my first cousin has been hospitalized twice in a month for kidney stone surgery. I’m on a mad search for some locally grown organic corn with silks I can dry for other health benefits such as blood pressure and inflammation. Randy, you should give it a try. I learn something new every day on here!
I have a neighbor with sunchokes and they’re taller than I am (over six feet). Don’t know how many he’s going to pull up. Other neighbors growing all sorts of squashes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, even a few cornstalks. Neighbors with fig trees are seeing plenty of fruit. One year one of the neighbors grew passion fruit. Don’t know if the fruit was any good but the flowers are very pretty.
My Granddaughter’s garden is going out as well, but she is still getting tomatoes!
So wonderful to see how excited she gets when she come in with her gems! It never gets old! Such sweet memories
My yellow squash and zucchini have stopped putting out so I just took them out. Tomatoes are about finished, except for the tommy toes – they just keep going. And I have some strawberry plants that are putting out big strawberries every day it seems but I know it is all going to be over soon. I may try to put in some lettuce just to see if it comes up for the fall.
Randy, I think your right about the purple hull peas I was mentioning actually being speckled lima beans. I must say mother was the queen of cooks and I remember those peas/lima beans as having the most beautiful purple specks in them, and being so delicious. I will say too when my daddy was growing up in NE MS there were no deer but today they have deer all over the place. The place is now rented out yearly for deer hunting. I did say a prayer for your ankle when I read your comment about it hurting. I try to pray for all the acorns everyday. God Bless!
A lot of the summer gardens have been gone since the first of August and I see very little fall gardening going on around here. After the hot and dry August, nothing would come up if it was planted. There has been a few spotty showers but not nearly enough to help with the drought. It is forecast to be 96 degrees today and the rest of the week before a chance of rain over the weekend and turning a little cooler next week. August has been so hot the birds are blowing on the worms they have managed to pull up to cool them off before eating them, the shade trees are looking for shade and so dry trees are fighting over male dogs. After writing that, I thought I saw a flash of lightening!
My ankle feels a little better this morning, it is still sore but does not have the sharp pain I have been having over the last week. I intend to keep doctoring on it and taking it easy- being lazy. I appreciate the ones that have prayed for me.
Glad to hear your ankle is a little better feeling. I’ve been praying for you. I still have pain in just about every joint in my body. I have trouble even typing this. If I call my doc he will put me on steroids and I don’t want any more of them. They are not good for your body, and I’m not supposed to take Tylenol or any other analgesic as they work on my liver. I already take two high risk drugs for the Rheumatoid Arthritis. I may have to go on infusions like my husband. He gets IV infusions of a med that soaks up the inflammation, and he has been doing great. Please pray for me too. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Tricia, I will be praying for you. I don’t think I am as bad off as you but do experience pain everyday. Everyday constant severe pain will not only take a toll on you physically but also mentally. Infusions have been mentioned to me but I am trying to “tough it out” as long as I can.

I’m still bringing in a bucket of tomatoes every other day, but they are starting to slow down. The squash has given up, flopping over in its pointedly dramatic fashion. And I had stopped picking the cucumbers afew weeks ago, thinking they were done, but two of the vines keep hanging on. Praise God for his bounty! Hubby mowed off the upper half of the garden where the beans and potatoes were supposed to go but never got put in, so we had a fine crop of weeds on that side. I’d love to get him to turn it over so I can sow some buckwheat for a cover crop. Oh, Tipper, I made your salsa recipe — it’s a hit! With so many tomatoes coming in, I’ll probably do another round of it this weekend. Thank you for sharing it!
Well, I think I have planted all the fall garden I’m going to. Now if we just get enough rain….. But, I’m glad to get Sept. sign days. I may plant more yet. Thanks. I did finish pulling up the field peas yesterday and did some weeding. Scattered a bunch of cilantro seed which I never really need to do. Old habit I guess. Summer garden same as gone but still getting bell pepper and jalapenos.

The only thing we are planting this late fall is garlic. We use a lot of it and the deer don’t seem interested in it at all. We usually do that in late October or November. So, I will keep a keen eye out for the best planting dates when that time comes around. Thank you for keeping us informed. My oldest grandchild is 15 today. Where has the time gone? Our garden is in such a sad state after continued winds and flooding. We’ve gardened all our married lives (before actually) and never seen anything like it. I have no right to complain as others not far from us have lost everything. The few things we have salvaged is strange. The corn looked to be ready over a week ago yet when we shuck it back it has just sit there and not matured. We always have beautiful sweet corn and have plenty to share. Same with the tomatoes. They are just sitting there. Gardening is our heritage and in our blood. I don’t remember ever a time in my life we didn’t have one. I’m saddened by it, but I know the Lord will carry us. He is good and faithful! In the meantime, I will admire yours, Tipper! If the Lord allows there will be next year.
