The best apple pie recipe

Chitter has been asking for an apple pie so over the weekend I made her one. The recipe I use makes the best ever apple pie and its easy-peasy too.

The Best Apple Pie

The recipe calls for a double crust. You can get out your favorite pastry recipe or buy a box of two from the refrigerator section of your grocery store.

I unroll one of the pie pastries and lay it in a regular size pie plate.

Best ever apple pie recipe

Slice your apples. I think I used 6 small apples for this pie, but I just slice up as many as it takes to fill the pie shell.

Southern apple pie

Cut a 1/2 stick of butter into cubes; sprinkle the cubed butter on top of the apples, along with 2 tablespoons of plain flour and 1 cup of sugar (my apples were really sweet-so I backed the sugar up to 3/4 of a cup).

Next-gently lay the 2nd pie crust pastry on top. I fold it under the bottom shell-and give it a good pinch all the way around to seal them together.

Double crust apple pie

Once I’ve secured the two pie pastries together-I go back around squeezing the crust between my thumb and index knuckle to give the pie a scalloped edge.

Brush an egg white on top of the crust and cut several holes in it to allow steam to escape.

Lastly, sprinkle sugar over the top and bake it for 1 hour in a 350 degree oven.

Tippers apple pie

This photo is proof that its the best apple pie. I set it on the counter to cool and when I came back to take a photo of the finished pie-almost half of it was already gone.

If you’re a long time reader of the Blind Pig & the Acorn you may be thinking-“That is just like Miss Cindy’s Blueberry Pie but with apples.” It is the same recipe, it turns out great no matter what fruit you use.

For a quicker less heavy apple pie check out Aunt Mary Jo’s Apple Pie-its good too!

  1. I got around to trying your apple pie recipe this past weekend and it came out very well. Big hit with everyone.
I’ve yet to flop trying one of your recipes and my record is certainly less than perfect working from a cookbook.

  2. Next time it might just have to cool under lock and key. However, I feel it was a complement that half was gone when you came to check on it. Now you have gotten me to think about making an apple pie tomorrow.

  3. That pie looks delicious!
I remember Grandma’s kitchen; when she made pies, she’d roll out the left-over bits of pastry, sprinkle them with sugar and cinnamon and bake it along with the pie. That bit of pastry was every bit as tasty as the pie, and I didn’t have to wait til dessert to eat it!

  4. Wow that looks so yummy.. I just buy the crusts.. my crusts are something to be desired…lol.. thanks for the great recipe..wrote it down..Susie

  5. My favorite pies to make are apple with a lattice crust. My mom taught me to weave and bake them when I was a little girl and they are my favorite thing to contribute to a covered dish dinner. Years ago, Mr. Barton, my sweet basket maker friend made me a two-pie basket to carry them in. Everyone likes to see that basket come through the door.

  6. Can she bake a cherry pie Billy Boy, Billy Boy? That really took me back a good many years. I always butter the top of the crust and sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar, just the way my mamma taught me. To each we have out own way, or our mama’s way.

  7. Know your pie was delicious and our recipes are the same except I always add a little cinnamon to mine. Either way, it would be great with a good cup of coffee.

  8. National PIE Day? I can’t believe I missed an event of this importance. Mrs. Wanda told me it was National Squirrel Day a few days ago, but nobody told me PIES were so honored. I’ll have to make 2 to make up for being late. Oh, the shame!I can walk past a cake without batting an eye, but PIE is special.

  9. Tipper,
I did make your blueberry pie last
year so I’ll have to try the apple
later this week. You make things
look so easy from those pictures
    and instructions and they actually
work for me. Love apple pie with
a little vanilla ice cream on top.
Only difference is I want a pinch
    of cinnamin in mine…Ken

  10. Wow, Tipper, you just made my day, another yummy recipe of yours to try. You know I love your recipes, yours, your family’s and friends that you so kindly pass on to us. Thanks so much. Have a great day.

  11. No cinnamon was the way my mother used to bake ’em when I was growing up, and I loved ’em and thought that was the only way to have apple pie. A lot of folks think just the opposite, though.

  12. A trick I use to make my world acclaimed (at least my grandson loves it) apple pie is to put the sugar, flour, spices and a little cornstarch in a covered bowl and shake them up to combine them. Then I put in the apples and shake again to coat them good. Put the apple slices in the crust and put on the cut up butter. Next drizzle about 1/4 cup of corn syrup over the apples, and finish just like you do. Try it you’ll like it!

  13. Hmmm sounds good. I’ll have to try that this one. I can attest to the excellent quality of Aunt Mary Jo’s apple pie recipe.

  14. I tried the Bluberry Pie and Aunt Mary Jo’s apple–both were great! I will try this one this weekend! I can lose weight next year.

  15. Tipper, your making me hungry this morning. A piece of that pie would be mighty fine with my hot cup of tea.
What was left of it was pretty to. LOL

  16. we can tell it was good to eat, and the photos are great of it, makes me want a piece. and this is so easy to do, and i would love it with cherries or any berries.

  17. Your pie looks so good this morning. Wish I had a big piece for breakfast. I love to melt a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on top of my piece. So good!

  18. tipper this sounds so good
the crust recipe brought back a little funny thing , remember the crimped edges on the old pie tins?
a little girl ask ‘granny how did you get the edges like that?” to which she replied “oh i just went around it with my teeth” now aint that like a granny?

  19. Tipper,
I love pie! I love apple, peach blackberry, cherry or any kind! Those pictures brought to mind something from my childhood. I was a rather frail little boy and many times I came home from school (especially the first grade)totally wasted. My Momma would take my book bag and set it beside the fireplace and get me up in the rocker and sing while I put my head on her shoulder. One of the songs that comes to mind (thanks to the photos) was this one.
Maybe someone will remember this one.
“Oh where have you been Billy
    boy, Billy boy,oh where have
    you been charmin’ Billy.
There was another line that went something like this:
“Can she bake a cherry pie
Billy boy, Billy boy can she
    bake a cherry pie charmin’
    Billy?
“She can bake a cherry pie
faster than a cat can wink
its’ eye, but she is a young
    thing an cannot leave her
    mother.”
Thanks Tipper for taking me back!

  20. Well Tipper, yours and my receit are almost the same I just sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar where you just used regular—and indeed they are good and when the children were still at home like ED said I made two.

  21. Tipper,
Yummmmm, that looks so good, I would just love to have a piece with my coffee for breakfast this morning…
PS….To save you all that hard work (lol) of making those slits in the top crust, you could use an old timey Pie Bird..maybe in the shape of a crow…
    Thanks Tipper,
Now let me check on my apple stash….

  22. Yummie! Can I get a cup of coffee with that! You gotta hide it when you take it out and let it get cold so the pectin can set. It’s better for the wait. Or better yet make two. Or better still make three and send one to me.
