The Best Radishes of the Year

September 17, 2025

basket with radishes

Yesterday I pulled up most of the radishes we planted in our fall garden. I don’t remember the exact variety name, but they are breakfast radishes.

I’m not sure where the type name breakfast originated. I’ve never known anyone who ate radishes as part of their morning meal.

We usually have more luck growing the regular round radishes, but not this year.

Our spring plantings of radishes didn’t do no good at all. I planted them three different times and none of them grew.

I love to eat radishes raw with a sprinkle of salt. I’ve never liked the heat of peppers but I love the spiciness of radishes.

There’s very few things that Matt doesn’t like to eat and radishes are one of them. People suggested I try roasting them for him and he did like them okay that way, but not near as much as I like them raw with salt.

Miss Cindy loved them like I do. Granny does too. I took her a big handful yesterday, but I’m not sure she’ll be able to eat them.

Radishes are one of the quickest things to grow in the garden. Some varieties only take 25 days to grow from seed to harvest. If I can find another packet I’m going to plant a few more.

  1. I’m praying for Granny and all of you during this difficult time. It is so hard to watch our loved ones just slip away day by day. Just be with her and love and reassure her every minute you have left with her. We went through this last year in August as Momma slipped away and it was so hard but still being there by her side just loving her gave both of us peace. I pray for peace and comfort for all of you. Love to you and Granny too.

  2. Thinking of my Daddy today. He loved raw radishes. He would eat radishes like candy! lol He would keep a salt shaker in his pocket and eat away! lol

  3. God bless you friends thank you for praying for me I’m at Neuro science center now, I hope the doctor tells me something good, thank you for praying and God bless you very much

  4. I have always liked radishes in my salad. Praying for Granny, your family, and Norman. I know the Lord is with each of you holding you close. Loved seeing Granny sing with the girls and when she told them she heard this song up North and had continued singing it to herself, I started singing it with her as I knew the words too. I don’t know where I learned it from but I have sung it to myself before too. It was joyful to my spirit to hear Granny singing it too!

  5. I love growing radishes ! They grow so fast ! Very fun & tasty ! I have never tried cooking them though !
Praying for Granny & Norman & all !
    Have a Blessed day everyone!

  6. I have only ate radishes in salads. I have grew some that would be hot like pepper if they were not used when small.

To go back to yesterday, blackberry walnut ice cream and Debbie, we also have a restaurant, hamburger joint or some other name at Anderson, SC that still has hand dipped ice cream and makes the old time, old fashioned milkshakes from milk, ice cream and mixes it up in a metal cup under a mixer. This is the only place I know of that still has another favorite ice cream flavor of mine-Florida Fruit. According to a sign in their window, this place opened in 1954 and still stays busy during the hours they are open.

I have meant to ask Tipper and some others about Copper Hill. Back in the 90’s I came back from Chattanooga by coming through Cleveland , Copper Hill and then northern Georgia on Hwy 76. At Copper Hill, I stopped at a parking lot that had the state line between Georgia and Tennessee running through the parking lot painted in white. My children thought it was something to straddle this line and be in two states at the same time. Just wondering if this parking lot is still there. It may have been a parking lot for a grocery store.

    1. my brother lives in copper Hill and he says the line is still there, we’re at the Emory NeuroScience center today, waiting my appointment, God bless you Randy

    2. Randy,
I really enjoy your daily comments. 🙂 I am very curious to know what Florida Fruit ice cream is like? It sounds good!

  7. I like radishes too, and use them in salads, roasted; add them into stews or soups and stir fries – a very versatile ‘veggie.’ Praying for a good day for Granny – and you all.

  8. I love radishes too. The last time we planted them the tops were large and leafy and just beautiful. The radishes were pitiful though, little more than a root.

  9. on my way back to Atlanta to the NeuroScience center at Emory University again, pray for my healing and pray for my safety, it’s a long ways to travel, thank you and God bless you, my brother is coming from copper Hill to take me he will be here at 9:00 a.m.

  10. I like radishes too and actually prefer the breakfast kind, but I don’t eat them for breakfast. I decided not to plant a fall garden this year. I pulled a large back muscle and it is taking longer to heal than expected. I have boiled my big radishes in salted water just like I do to boil potatoes. Once they are fork tender I drain them and serve them with butter and salt just like I do with boiled potatoes. They taste just like boiled potatoes just look smaller and no carbohydrates. When my husband and I had done the Keto diet we both loved the boiled radishes because they were allowed. If it passed my hubby’s approval I figure Matt might think they taste okay too.

  11. That’s a right pretty bunch of radishes! I do hope you can find another pack to start. There is nothing like a fresh radish from the garden w/salt. I do hope Granny will be able to enjoy the radishes you shared w/her. Continuing Prayers for her comfort & strength for ya’ll.

  12. Radishes with salt is truly a winner with me also. Today is the day for planting more!!
Continued prayers for your mama and family. In every situation GOD is good.

  13. I love radishes. On my kidney diet 2x a week I eat steamed vegetables and I always slice a couple of radishes and their greens in the mix. Prayers continue for Granny and for your family. I watched the girls video with her singing with them. I cried so hard. I love Y’all.

  14. I want to grow radishes but can never remember to buy the seeds (memory fails me alot) but I long for a really good radish that just can not be consistently bought in grocery stores. I want enough to try roasting them and various other ways that until recently I did not know could be done with a radish. My mom loved to eat radishes but I do not recall if she applied salt to hers…..your eggs looked so good in last night’s video I will have to make me a couple today. praying for comfort for granny and strength for your entire family
