The Streamline Cannon Ball

This installment in the Train Series is probably a bit of a “phone-it-in” video. It was shot on a Wednesday evening after a long day of work for both me and Corie, with dead strings on our guitars. 🙂 I was pretty tired but knew I needed a song for the third video.

I got to thinking… Have I ever written a train song? And I remembered this song that I made up when I was 15 or 16. The tune or melody is pretty standard, not very original, but it has a good feel and tempo. The lyrics aren’t half bad (in my opinion), but there’s no real closure at the end. It doesn’t have a chorus per se, so I just repeated one of the verses. I think it has enough train references to count as a train song. 🙂

It’s from the perspective of someone whose girlfriend wandered away (perhaps on a train), so he decides he should just get on a train and do the same, not necessarily in search of her but just because there’s nothing left to hold him there.

I asked Corie to do a little hammer-on lick in E major (with the capo on the third fret) to create a bit of a train sound or rhythm.

The lyrics are below.

I was walking one Sunday evening, down a lonesome stretch of road, When I saw that train come rollin’, trying hard to pull its load. I wondered where it was headed. I wondered where it had been. I wondered where you were and if I’d ever see you again.

Oh, why did you leave me, Darlin’? Why did you go away? Why did you prove unfaithful and throw our love away? Well, I guess you wanted to ramble, had to wander, had to roam. You can roam this o’le world over, but you’ll never find someone who loves you more.

Well, I’m boardin’ that train this evening. Gonna see where it will go. Gonna find out where it will take me, far away from here, I hope. Well, I know someday you’ll be sorry, later on, down the line. Gonna be so sad and lonely, gonna wish that you were still mine.

Repeat 2nd verse

We’ll conclude this year’s train song series next week. Thanks for watching!

  1. What a terrific song, really enjoyed it! I love how close Corie seems with her Uncle Paul, nothing like a close knit family!

  2. Wow! What an awesome song. If that don’t bring a smile to your face and put some pep in your step I don’t know what will. Paul and Corie did a wonderful job. I think they sound a lot better than some of that stuff they’re calling country nowadays. 🙂

  3. My father was the building and bridge inspector for the Penna. Railroad so until I was 18 I got to ride free. I took the train every where I could and got to know the conductors and the engineers on each of the trains. I guess you would know I have loved Paul’s railroad songs . My Mother could put me on a train in Harrisburg and the men would see that I got off where I was supposed to and wait with me til someone picked me up. You sure could not do that today. Glad I grew up when I did. Paul’s song was pretty good for a teenager. Great talent.

    1. Sounds like when my uncle drove a Trailways bus. We would catch the bus in Greenville, SC and ride to Atlanta, spend some time with him and then catch another bus with a different driver back to Greenville. My grandmother, his mother, would be treated by the other drivers and the ones at the depot or station like she was a queen. She could go anywhere she chose at no cost.

  4. Great “pick me up” train song; if Paul and Corie were tired, it sure didn’t show in their outstanding “pickin” in this toe tapping, up lifting song. Kudos from down Florida way!

  5. Wonderful song! Paul, you have an amazing gift. You and Corie once again did a great job! Keep on doing what ya’ll are doing. Have a blessed Sunday everyone!!

  6. I have the CD so pass the chance on.

I used to write poems in my teenage years, long ago now, but somehow that spring dried up. I don’t even know if any examples survive. Hope you keep on writing your own songs Paul and setting them to music as well. You do have the talents to do it.

I think we can all relate to the wish to leave a painful place, hoping by that to leave the pain behind. It can help but it is not a cure-all. Along about the age you were when you wrote that is when we start realizing there are big changes coming in our near future and it can be an unsettled time with the first choices to be made that may determine our life’s direction. A long view down a road, trail or train track is allegorical of that time.

  7. I really enjoy the train series, I would also like to win the CD. Thanks for posting this music and the opportunity to win.

  8. I’ve ridden on a train a couple of times – short trips. I keep thinking about taking a trip around the country but every time I check the price I know I probably never will. Great music today as usual.

  9. What a wonderful song. All of you did a great job. I am really enjoying the train series. Getting ready for Thanksgiving cooking collards, turnips and rutabagas yesterday and freezing them for the big day. We truly have much to be thankful for.

  10. For tired working folks y’all totally got the lead out and kicked into overdrive! I really enjoyed this song and I think after a hard day, you and Mrs. Corie let out a lot of stress by giving us an excellent song! The professionalism and experience is evident in all your musical endeavors and I’m thankful for the excellent entertainment this cold but beautiful Sunday morning! May you have a blessed week, Paul and Corie! BTW, your guitar is really pretty, Paul.

  11. Thank you. I enjoyed the song and now ready to start my day! We’re about ready to pick up some donated Thanksgiving fixings and take them to the food pantry to give out tomorrow for people to take home and prepare.

  12. Nothing like good music to start a cold November Sunday morning! Love the train song series, it starts the day off with a good rhythm and a tune in my head!

  13. As usual the song is good. When I see a train I often wonder were it has been or is going and have an urge to get on it and see where it goes. I would like to win the cd, I spend a lot of time on you tube listening to the BP&A gang singing the gospel hymns. Two of my favorites are “Precious Memories and Until Then”. Since my wife’s death these two songs have a lot meaning for me.
