Charlie Louvin

I hope everyone had a wonderful Independence Day. As you might discern from my appearance in the video I’m sharing today, I’ve been pretty lazy lately, but not too lazy to honor the great Charlie Louvin with one of his songs for his birthday.

I apologize for the creek sound in this video. Outside seemed like the best place available to shoot the video. The background isn’t very scenic, but I figured if I put the back of the camera to the creek, it would cut down on some of the noise.

This is one of my favorite solo songs that Charlie recorded and released in 1966, only one year after his brother Ira passed.

To hear his amazing vocal and some cool classical guitar work, just search for the original here on YouTube.

I can’t sing it as good as Charlie did, but then neither can anyone else. 🙂 That thought was liberating enough for me to try it without any practice.

I classify this song as a barroom country song. According to a quick Google search, and according to a recording that Jean Shepherd released of this song three years after Charlie’s recording (in 1969), Charlie wrote this song.

He sure came up with some great lyrics and imagery in this song. After Ira passed, many of Charlie’s songs were written by Dallas Frazier, but Charlie wrote a few, and apparently, this is one of them.

The lyrics are below:

There comes someone’s heartache. She’s walking straight to me. Somebody’s cried. A love has died. She’s somebody’s shattered dream. If she sould stop at my table, will I be the next to cry? Would I be smart to hide my heart and let her walk on by?

I see the trace of teardrops, and she wears a haughty smile. She’s hungry for a new love but for just a little while. But I can’t hide my feelings. My loneliness she sees. Here comes someone’s heartache. She’s walking straight to me. She’s walking straight to me.

I hope you enjoyed this song, and I encourage you to check out the original. You’ll be glad you did.

  1. Between the creek & the subdued light, I felt like I was sitting on the back porch with you at dusk. Such a pleasant and relaxing way to end a day.

  6. Paul, you did a great job on Charlie’s song as he smiled down from Heaven. There’s not a duo in the business that can harmonize like the brothers could.

  7. If a little hiatus from Sunday mornings adds up to this, then try it again and again. Don’t be so quick to apologize for the gurgling of the stream. It outdid you, but only slightly. God writes far better songs than Charlie Lovin and sings them better than you or me.

I can’t remember a time when you played the way you did today. I love the muted sounds of finger picking. I would love to see more of that too!

  9. Happy Birthday in heaven, Charlie! Paul, you did a fine, fine job on this song. Here’s some advice- keep sunglasses nearby for just such times as that man eater cruising for a meal. Just slide them on in a very cool manner and act like you’re invisible. It has worked for me many times. Lol It doesn’t matter if it’s dark- that only adds to the mysterious image. However, don’t be walking around. Lol I personally thought the creek sound only ADDED to this good video. Next time, pull up a chair at the creek and put a few ducks and maybe a big turtle or two on a rock! Lol Have a great day and let’s find the joy everywhere we can!

  10. Paul I love a creek and the sound of it:) As always, you sing beautifully and there is certainly a lot of truth in that song. Hope you all have a beautiful day and week ahead. I’ve got to leave and get to church.

The sound of the creek moving slowly was a perfect setting for Paul’s singing this Charlie Louvin song.

Hope you and the deer hunter stayed cool yesterday in the garden

  14. Paul, as usual you did a real fine job. I tell people I am not being lazy, I am being energy efficient. Seems to be a lot of truth in the words of the song that could apply to both women and men.

  15. Brilliant lyrics, beautifully performed. ( Poignant and succinctly written) I enjoyed hearing the creek in the background, too! Paul, you and your Dad are/were truly gifted with beautiful voices. Your vocals sound effortless. It’s a real treat to hear you sing!
