Happy Resurrection Day

Legend of the Dogwood

At the time of the crucifixion, the dogwood had reached the size of the mighty oak tree. So strong and firm was the wood that it was chosen as the timber for Jesus’ cross.

To be used for such a cruel purpose greatly distressed the dogwood. While nailed upon it, Jesus sensed this, and in his compassion said. “Because of your pity for my suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used for a cross. Henceforth, it shall be slender, bent, and twisted, and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross–two long and two short petals.”

“In the center of the outer edge of each petal will be the print of nails. In the center of the flower, stained with blood, will be a crown of thorns so that all who see it will remember.”

Here’s some of my favorite songs for Easter.

Wishing each of you a blessed Easter. He is risen!

  1. I like the dogwood picture. The blue sky through the branches makes it look like stained glass. I’m sure I have posted this before but … about 20 years ago I planted a white dogwood (to the right of the church steps looking outward) and a red-purple redbud (also known as a Judas tree) on the left side. Every once in a while, both are blooming at Easter. Not this year though, each had bloomed and dropped their flowers before today. The ground was covered in dog wood petals.

  2. Thank you, Tipper, for posting the story about the Legend of the Dogwood. I have never heard that before. Thank you, Jesus, for dying on the cross. Our Lord and Saviour has Risen. AMEN
Have a very Blessed Resurrection Day everyone.

  3. Happy Easter everyone!
I’ve never heard the Legend of the Dogwood tree, it’s a beautiful story!

There’s a song called Ten Thousand Angels, the chorus goes like this:

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free
He could have called ten thousand angels
But He died alone for you and me

It sends chills down my spine when I hear it, I thank Jesus everyday because only through his death and resurrection that I’m promised eternal life, Amen!

  4. A beautiful tree, the Dogwood. A beautiful story of the Risen Lord. Praise God, He is risen, risen indeed! Please pray for my cousin Wanda’s family. She passed away this morning, after a long illness. I will miss her so very much. May this Easter be a blessing to all your family and friends Miss Tipper and give your precious momma my best wishes.

      1. Thank you and may God bless you Miss Tipper. You are a true friend to this old lady. I appreciate you and your family. Jennifer

  5. There’s going to one more Resurrection Day and I’m going to be there, in person, for that one! Christ arose and so will I, in His time!

  6. Tipper, I don’t know one single song on your favorites list. Where was I? They weren’t in our Baptist hymnals, and nobody sang them at our family singing sessions. I’ll be doing a little research later, to hear what I missed. He is risen, indeed!

  7. I grew up being told of this Legend of the Dogwood. Way back in the 1970s
When I was a child, I was told this each year. We also had a postcard… Just last evening, I was walking around the yard and took a photo of the flowers to send to my daughter. I can’t look at a dogwood blossom and not think of the nail prints. ✝️
I hope you and your family have a nice Resurrection Day!

  8. We are truly blessed to serve such a Lord! I was saved long ago, I’m learning more and more about Jesus and the sacrifice he made. I’ve heard the story of the dogwood before, it’s amazing.

  9. My daddy used to tell the story about the dogwood flower showing nail prints and Jesus’ blood. Every spring he would pull off one of the flowers and talk to whoever was near about the appearance of the dogwood. My husband attended the Sunrise service at our church this morning. Two of my children and my grandchildren also attended. There was a good group of people there. This is also my 63rd spiritual birthday. I was saved at age 13. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long, and I sometimes have a hard time believing I’m 76 years old. A lot of my relatives, friends and acquaintances have long left the earth to go be with Jesus including my daddy who will have passed 25 years June 26. I hope everyone has a blessed Easter.

    1. I have heard this legend before, but had forgotten the exact words. Thank you for sharing. Hope you and your family have a blessed Resurrection Sunday!

  10. Happy Resurrection Day! Thank you Jesus!
I had not heard the Legend of the Dogwood. What a beautiful story and very fitting to illustrate the compassion of Jesus our Lord through the beauty of nature Father God created.

  11. The dogwood and the honeysuckle were my mama’s favorites when I was growing up. She often used the dogwood to illustrate the Easter story to me and my brother. “The dogwood and Easter Lilly are signs to us just like a rainbow, of Gods love and promise of new life to those who place their trust in him.”

  12. Praise God for His perfect gift!!! I’m so blessed for life and a home, food, clothes, my daughter, my family. More blessings than I can count. Thank God for you and your family Tipper. God has used y’all to touch our lives.

  13. After my writing my first comment, I have read a daily devotional by Dr. Charles Stanley, it was about what would have happened if Jesus had not risen from the dead. 1 Corinthians 15: 13-23.

  14. The dogwood trees blooming in the spring is one of my favorite things of spring. I read this about the dogwood many years ago and never look at a dogwood tree in bloom without thinking about this story. Happy Easter to everyone. Today, April 20th is not only Easter Sunday this year, but also the day of my wife’s funeral 4 years ago. I will be soon be leaving to go to the sunrise service at the cemetery she is buried at.

      1. Hey Randy, I added a poem for you in the comments on the April 16 post. I hope it helps in some way. Glad you can be with family today!!
