Last week we slipped off and went to the beach. I hadn’t been since 2021 and Matt hadn’t been since 2015. He doesn’t like it near as much as we do but he had a good time.
Our days were spent playing in the ocean, beachcombing, and sitting on the beach reading and people watching. That was my favorite part of the trip.
Matt’s favorite was the fresh seafood we ate.
It’s been years since I did nothing but read, nap, and sit in the sun. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.
Woodrow has been to the beach already this summer, but it was still fun seeing him play in the sand and water. I loved seeing Ira’s reaction to seeing the ocean for the first time. Matt told him it was Old man Kelsey’s pond 🙂
We went to Garden City SC. We’ve been before but never stayed directly on the beach. Being so close was really nice for the boys.
On our way down Sunday before last we went through some terrible storms. My goodness the water can pond up in a hurry in the flat lands.
There were a couple of nights with thunderstorms, but other than that the weather was beautiful.
The change that can happen in the garden over the course of a week is amazing. We had friends come and harvest anything they wanted while we were gone so that helped on that front. But the end of summer rusty look took full control of our gardens while we were gone. The bean bugs had a real field day.
I’m hoping to plant a few things for fall but we’ve got some work to do first. Hopefully we can at least get some greens planted before it’s too late.

I’m so happy y’all could get away together! Well deserved!! My in laws always stayed at Garden City on the ocean and they too loved it. I love the reference to old man Kelsey’s pond.
Our garden is in salvage mode. We have had so much rain most of it is rurnt. Mold and fungus. I’ve never seen anything like this. I have no right to complain as up the road towns have lost everything. They are calling it the thousand year event. It’s kinda like a smaller version of North Carolina’s event on flat land with the exception of so many lives lost. So heartbreaking. They are still looking for a boy. They found his two brothers alive, but continue searching for him. It’s been devastating for so many, but God is so good! So many people from other states have come to help. One area had 17″ of rain in a few hours. We had 11″ but it came over 2 days.
Update, Little B has had to stop treatment for now. Her mamaw said she has been so happy and playful with her brother. They have seen laughter and smiles again. The steroids have been really hard on her. They have the MRI today and will determine if she can return to treatments. We continue to pray for a miracle! My aunt has had to stop her treatment for now as her kidneys are really being stressed from it. Our reunion is in a few weeks at Fort Boonesborough and we pray she feels up to going. My brother in law will have his aorta surgery Friday. He is frail after his cancer treatment and we lift him in prayer. My sister’s friend Roxie is at the City of Hope in Chicago very sick. The fluid they pulled from her lungs was positive. Please remember her. So much and so many.
We continue to pray for all y’all! So many of you have dire needs too and we lift y’all in prayer. God sees all the needs of His beloved children. He hears our hearts and see our tears even when we cannot speak. Please know you are deeply loved by Him and He will answer according to His will. I have served Him all my life and I don’t always understand things, but I trust Him. He is good and His mercy endures forever. Go make it a beautiful day wherever you are! Many blessings!!
I’m so glad y’all got away and relaxed. It does the body and soul good to get away for a while every now and then.
This sounds so wonderful, Tipper. Thank you for sharing about your special time at the beach as a family! We just returned last night from a 4-day trip to the north shore in MN. Though it is not the ocean, Lake Superior is absolutely stunning and there is nothing quite as peaceful as being on the water. We were talking about our favorite parts of the trip last night when we got home and everyone’s consensus was that the times on the beach/shore/hiking along with picnicking outside were the highlights even more than a train ride, tour of a lighthouse etc. There is nothing as deeply fulfilling and peaceful as simple time spent in nature as a family. We had a lot of fun enjoying the sounds, the crystal clear blue water stretching as far as the eye could see, people/bird watching and skipping rocks. My daughter also came home with a jar of special rocks and petrified wood. Water can do some amazing things. I can imagine how much fun the beach was with the boys as our youngest is just 4 months older than Ira. Everything is so magical and exciting to them at this age. Such joy. I’m so thankful you could all get away together. 🙂
I haven’t been to Myrtle Beach or any other beach in nearly 25 years. My wife and daughter would go, take my two grandsons and stay a week, they loved it. Two days and nights is the most I can stand, and that is pushing it. Sitting on the beach in the hot summer and the big crowds is not for me, I can sit in the hot sun at home. If I ever did go back, I would either go in early spring or late fall. After all I am now too old- looking at the girls could cause heart and eye problems, and I am too feeble to get in the ocean! Now I am ready to go to the mountains at any time, especially if it is in the fall of the year.
