Last week we slipped off and went to the beach. I hadn’t been since 2021 and Matt hadn’t been since 2015. He doesn’t like it near as much as we do but he had a good time.
Our days were spent playing in the ocean, beachcombing, and sitting on the beach reading and people watching. That was my favorite part of the trip.
Matt’s favorite was the fresh seafood we ate.
It’s been years since I did nothing but read, nap, and sit in the sun. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.
Woodrow has been to the beach already this summer, but it was still fun seeing him play in the sand and water. I loved seeing Ira’s reaction to seeing the ocean for the first time. Matt told him it was Old man Kelsey’s pond 🙂
We went to Garden City SC. We’ve been before but never stayed directly on the beach. Being so close was really nice for the boys.
On our way down Sunday before last we went through some terrible storms. My goodness the water can pond up in a hurry in the flat lands.
There were a couple of nights with thunderstorms, but other than that the weather was beautiful.
The change that can happen in the garden over the course of a week is amazing. We had friends come and harvest anything they wanted while we were gone so that helped on that front. But the end of summer rusty look took full control of our gardens while we were gone. The bean bugs had a real field day.
I’m hoping to plant a few things for fall but we’ve got some work to do first. Hopefully we can at least get some greens planted before it’s too late.

We were watching your video of the week at the beach and was pleasantly surprised to see that you drove through our area on the way home, Easley, South Carolina!! You were probably about 20 minutes from our house.

What a nice trip for your family. I know you enjoyed those sweet little boys. There is something healing about the beach and seeing and hearing the waves, seeing up close the wonder of God’s creation.
I am so happy you were able to have a relaxing vacation. I love to sit on the beach under an umbrella and read and relax…but I just can’t tolerate the heat anymore. I think I am spoiled by lots of shade trees and cooler mountain breezes. So if we go to the beach, it is October. We haven’t been there in a few years. We usually go to Emerald Isle in the outer banks and rent a cottage on the beach. This is a great time to take long walks.
I’m 10 minutes from the beach Honeymoon Island, which is a more natural beach and less crowded. I don’t go much but it is so relaxing when we go. Glad you had a good time!
I love the hill country and the seashore. My career and travels have taken me from my beloved Blue Ridge Mountains to the Swiss Alps, from Folly and Myrtle beaches to the Redneck Riviera at Panama City, and from the western piedmont of South Carolina to famed Daytona Beach, Florida. The last stop will be north-central Georgia, near family. My wife and I plan to spend the rest of our days there, within easy reach of the hills I love.
A beach getaway is always memorable! We live in rural San Diego County, and it takes us about 45 minutes to get to one of several beaches, which by the way are generally not as big as on the east coast. My friends/family would go more often, but parking is a nightmare. My husband surfed for many years; my preference is to sit under an umbrella and read. It sounds tempting right now as we’re in the middle of a very long heat wave…I’m so ready for fall temperatures.
I’m jealous; I haven’t been in at least five years!
Everybody deserves a beach day every now and again! Collect a few clams and make some chowder! 😉
Sounds like a wonderful trip! It’s not often that we can sit and enjoy the beauty of the ocean that was created by the hands of God. Life is busy but it is very important to take time to enjoy all that our Lord has provided. Our wonderful family ( especially our grandchildren ) and all the surrounding beauty that we are to be good stewards of for our Lord. Fall is approaching fast and soon the vibrant autumn colors will appear. Giving Glory to God for all seasons and all things!
Haha, we were 12 hrs from home, in Gulf Shores AL from Aug 14-22, in a condo right on the beach, with our grandbabies too (turning 2yrs, 4yrs &5yrs in the next 4 mo.) Our favorite part was the two yr old, Reign Avanell, comin in our bedroom sayin “I’m in you room!” Haha in a nana nana boo boo way.

We seem to have passed our beach years. We used to go to South Carolina or Georgia beaches when the kids were at home. We made some really good memories that are priceless and that was the reason to go. I could learn to love the coast I guess, especially if I were a boat person ’cause then I could explore to heart’s content and ‘discover’ an ‘undiscovered’ coastal village of home folks. But I don’t know that I could ever shake a disjointed feeling because the land was just too flat. Anyway, as others here have posted,so glad you all had this time. We here are all close enough to rejoice at one another’s blessings. As a preacher friend of mine says, “That’ll preach!”

Hi Tipper and Acorns. I’m so glad y’all got some time to relax together. Last time I was at the beach was in 1987 at Bridge City on the Gulf of Mexico in TX. I’ve loved your videos too. I hope fall planting goes well. It was 46 here at 5am.
i thought you might be gone somewhere, there was just something about your posts…yesterday i decided i would redo my hydroponic garden that i’ve let play out—cherry tomato plants have legged up to the ceiling!—over labor day weekend. planning only lettuces , herbs and maybe just two cherry tomatoes that i will prune back religiously. now let’s see if i can make myself do it.
Beach week. To me that is my ideal vision of heaven. I’m a water baby. I was born in Portland Me. and spent my first few years growing up at Old Orchard Beach. My brother and I played in the beach sands in the winter. You were truly blessed to be able to sit by the cool ocean’s waters and read, people watch, collect shells, and just recharge. I’m with Matt I love fresh seafood. When Diane traveled with me to New Hampshire to visit my mother she had her first taste of “real New England” seafood. She was hooked so to speak. I love “Mike’s” in Blaisville but that is not New England seafood. Close but no cigar. It’s the end of the year for my summer garden also and it is sad. I love my fresh tommy toes. I’m still getting a few each week. With recharged batteries its full steam ahead for more great videos showing everyone how putting God first will result in a blessed life.
Everyone needs a little salt in their lives from time to time. I’m proud y’all got to go. We are about 4.5-6 hrs. from The Gulf of America or simply “the beach” and usually end up between Mobile and Panama City Beach (was at Navarre Beach, FL three wks. ago). When I was younger folks used to say something like, “we decided to ride down to Flardee-Alabama and go to the beach and get us sack of oysters!” That is back when northwest FL was still counted as “Southern”. I have witnessed many changes driving to and along the Gulf Coast in my 62 years. Most of the mom and pop hotels/shops are gone and have been replaced with condos and tourist draws. We like Gulf Shores. There is a lot of state land that is not developed and it is not as crowded as PCB. I like to visit, especially in the fall when the water temps are warmest and the humidity levels have dropped, for the seafood, the ocean, change of scenery, etc. but after a few days of that flat land and sand, I’m ready to head home. Also, fall is the time of year along the Gulf when many festivals (seasfood, shrimp, Indian Summer Seafood, etc.) take place and hotels/condos usually lower their prices for the “off season”.

The beach is a great place to be! So glad you got to get away and be together and I’m sure it was a much needed break.
I’m so happy you were able to get away for some relaxing time with your family. I grew up in northeastern Ohio and my siblings and neighbors used to go swimming in Lake Erie. We enjoyed frolicking in the water with large inner tubes and playing in the sand. When my children were growing up, we camped and always went to beaches with them. They loved the water and sand. Personally, I don’t enjoy the hot beaches. My idea of a relaxing time is to visit museums and camp in the mountains. My arthritis has flared up this last month and its difficult to do anything but sit around and read, which I enjoy better than anything.
I hope the flare goes away soon!
Thank you, Tipper. I’m testing the diet field to see if I can control the flares with a different way of eating like Low carb. I don’t want to take steroids.
Tricia, after getting dehydrated early this year and it effecting my kidneys, the doctor has stopped me from taking any medicine that would help with my arthritis. I can only take Tylenol. That helps about as much as a sugar pill. I fully understand hurting so bad and only laying or sitting around reading, some days that is the only relief I can get from the pain. I don’t have any hope of ever living another day for the rest of my life without hurting or being in pain. My only hope is some days won’t be as bad as others.
Randy, I empathize with you. This is rheumatoid arthritis where your immune system turns against you. I have had it for 17 years. I already take two high risk drugs which had controlled it until last month. The docs usually give you steroids and up the medication of which I don’t want so I’m trying to see if diet, like low carbohydrates will help. Regardless of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid bone pain hurts. I’m not even supposed to take Tylenol because of its effect on the liver. So, I use heat and ice but, in my case, my whole body aches. I will keep you in my prayers, God is good.
Tricia, you sound a lot like me, I as told by a doctor that had the reputation of being the best orthopedic doctor in Greenville, SC when I was in my 20’s that I had inherited the arthritis from my mother and her family. He and mother grew up together and he knew her family real well. The blue collar manual labor work I did all of my life has not helped. He told me by the time I was in my 50’s I would be having a hard time and it would only get worse. He knew what he was talking about. I was told by my doctor and a nurse practitioner friend they won’t give any type of anti inflammatory medication to me because of having a kidney problem.

I’m so happy y’all could get away together! Well deserved!! My in laws always stayed at Garden City on the ocean and they too loved it. I love the reference to old man Kelsey’s pond.
Our garden is in salvage mode. We have had so much rain most of it is rurnt. Mold and fungus. I’ve never seen anything like this. I have no right to complain as up the road towns have lost everything. They are calling it the thousand year event. It’s kinda like a smaller version of North Carolina’s event on flat land with the exception of so many lives lost. So heartbreaking. They are still looking for a boy. They found his two brothers alive, but continue searching for him. It’s been devastating for so many, but God is so good! So many people from other states have come to help. One area had 17″ of rain in a few hours. We had 11″ but it came over 2 days.
Update, Little B has had to stop treatment for now. Her mamaw said she has been so happy and playful with her brother. They have seen laughter and smiles again. The steroids have been really hard on her. They have the MRI today and will determine if she can return to treatments. We continue to pray for a miracle! My aunt has had to stop her treatment for now as her kidneys are really being stressed from it. Our reunion is in a few weeks at Fort Boonesborough and we pray she feels up to going. My brother in law will have his aorta surgery Friday. He is frail after his cancer treatment and we lift him in prayer. My sister’s friend Roxie is at the City of Hope in Chicago very sick. The fluid they pulled from her lungs was positive. Please remember her. So much and so many.
We continue to pray for all y’all! So many of you have dire needs too and we lift y’all in prayer. God sees all the needs of His beloved children. He hears our hearts and see our tears even when we cannot speak. Please know you are deeply loved by Him and He will answer according to His will. I have served Him all my life and I don’t always understand things, but I trust Him. He is good and His mercy endures forever. Go make it a beautiful day wherever you are! Many blessings!!
Debbie, thank you for the update on Little B, I continue to pray for her and will pray for the others. I have seen the flooding going on in other areas of the country. It makes the 4 inches of rain we had in about an hour Friday night seem like a little shower. We have been and still are in a drought for the last several years. We have had a little more rain this summer but no where near enough to get out of the drought. I cut over 2 acres of grass yesterday and it was like being in a dust bowl despite the rain we had Friday. The grass and many other things are drying up and dying.
Debbie, I’m going to pray for Little B, heavenly father in the name of Jesus please touch this little girl, please take this affliction from her, please heal her body and make her well, give her back her health Lord, I pray and ask this blessing in the name of Jesus my Lord and Savior, for this child Lord, in Jesus name, Amen

I sat down to quickly read what our Acorns are discussing this morning before getting ready for chemo and, dang it all, I’m so sorry to hear of so many in need of prayers. Little B just stays on my mind♡ and please know my healing thoughts are with your family and friends as well. May they all feel some relief very soon♡

This sounds so wonderful, Tipper. Thank you for sharing about your special time at the beach as a family! We just returned last night from a 4-day trip to the north shore in MN. Though it is not the ocean, Lake Superior is absolutely stunning and there is nothing quite as peaceful as being on the water. We were talking about our favorite parts of the trip last night when we got home and everyone’s consensus was that the times on the beach/shore/hiking along with picnicking outside were the highlights even more than a train ride, tour of a lighthouse etc. There is nothing as deeply fulfilling and peaceful as simple time spent in nature as a family. We had a lot of fun enjoying the sounds, the crystal clear blue water stretching as far as the eye could see, people/bird watching and skipping rocks. My daughter also came home with a jar of special rocks and petrified wood. Water can do some amazing things. I can imagine how much fun the beach was with the boys as our youngest is just 4 months older than Ira. Everything is so magical and exciting to them at this age. Such joy. I’m so thankful you could all get away together. 🙂
I haven’t been to Myrtle Beach or any other beach in nearly 25 years. My wife and daughter would go, take my two grandsons and stay a week, they loved it. Two days and nights is the most I can stand, and that is pushing it. Sitting on the beach in the hot summer and the big crowds is not for me, I can sit in the hot sun at home. If I ever did go back, I would either go in early spring or late fall. After all I am now too old- looking at the girls could cause heart and eye problems, and I am too feeble to get in the ocean! Now I am ready to go to the mountains at any time, especially if it is in the fall of the year.
