32 Years Ago Today

Today is our 32nd wedding anniversary. In one way it seems like it was just yesterday and in another it seems like I’ve never been without Matt.

We met on a blind date.

I was working in Canton NC with my cousins. One cousin was married to a friend of Matt’s father.

I can still hear her telling me I should meet Matt. Her sister chimed in to say she used to see him when she worked at BILO and he came in on his lunch break. She said “Tipper he is really cute.”

On our first date we rode up the mountain with my cousin and her husband. I took a shine to Matt immediately. He was cute and we had much in common.

In those days horse riding was big in our circle of family and friends. A big bunch of us would go to Shining Rock or even for a quick ride around the loop at Sunburst.

Matt and I would often fall to the back of the line trying to ride side by side in the wide places so we could talk.

We dated about four years before marrying so we’ve been together for about 36 years all together. All these years later we still talk about everything under the sun and I still think Matt is a handsome man. But more than that he’s a good husband and a good father—and now a good papaw.

So many sweet memories of our wedding day remain in my mind. From the love we shared to the friends and family who gathered to watch us tie the knot.

I got ready in the basement of the church and had to walk up the stairs with Pap before entering the sanctuary.

As we stopped on the landing to await the signal for us to continue on our march Pap told me “Tipper I’m real proud of you and we couldn’t have picked no one better than Matt for you to marry.”

All these years later I whole heartedly agree with Pap.

    Seems your daddy was right about Matt, Tipper. I told my daughter the same thing about the man she chose. They’ve been married for 15 years now.

  19. Congratulations Matt and Tipper. You all are the sweetest couple! My hubby and I have been married 45 years, and I feel like you do…it has went by so quickly…and I also feel like we have always been together. We were friends since 7th grade and dated from 17 until we married at age 20. I just know I am still the luckiest girl to have found a good man that loves me and his children and grandchildren, and who has always worked hard to make sure we are all taken care of. The icing on the cake is getting to sit beside him in church on Sunday mornings with little ones crawling on our lap and sitting close beside us. God Bless you and your marriage—and may it last another 32 years or longer!!

  21. ♥️♥️A toast(apple juice of course )to Mrs Tipper and Mr Matt. When you get to 32 years + together, it’s quite an accomplishment for the both of y’all. I’ve always felt it was the intention of God for y’all to have met, courted then married, by His choosing. I’ve always felt this way in my marriage. 12/31/66. Soon to be 60 years. We communicated and dated for 5 years, one of those years engaged. Through it all, ups downs and all the in betweens, God has always been there for us and I truly believe, y’all too. So Mr and Mrs Pressley, A wonderful, Happy, God blessed Anniversary, to the both of you. (Sorry for the lengthy message, I always talk too much. Love you both.

  26. Happy celebrating and hopes for many more. I’ve officiated a few weddings and always told the couple that the vows were not just to each other, but were being made to God also.

    My wife and I will celebrate number 62 next month and our first date was in May of the same year – a little over four months of dating/planning.

  32. I am sorry for writing this, it has nothing to with marriage anniversaries but a lifelong friendship that can’t be described with words. My closest friend called me about 1 hour ago to tell me he has been diagnosed with leukemia. It was caught early and he does not know many details until he meets again with the doctors. I can’t walk this morning because of my ankle hurting so bad, I have just been laying here on top of my bed and crying since he called and told me. His name is Kenneth-always Kenny to me, please pray for him.

  42. Happy 32nd wedding anniversary! Tipper and Matt, I’ve said it in many comments on many of y’all’s YouTube channel in many different ways, but truly you and Matt are just perfect for each other. You each found God’s chosen soulmate to live life with. I enjoy seeing how you both interact with each other in conversations and how well you both help each other. I know neither of you are perfect, because none of us are, but you two together were just perfectly made for each other. Y’all have and are truly blessed.   52. Happy anniversary to you and Matt. You both have been blessed to have each other. Every time we watch one if your videos the love between you two just glows. And the blessings you have with your two daughters, two beautiful grandsons, Paul, and your extended family continue to bless you each day. I’ve found through the years that when I use my desire to do something it usually turns out not so good. When I turn to God it’s just the opposite. My wife Diane ( will be married 30 years on 1/1/2927) was also a recommendation from a friend. He wanted me to write this lady who I did not know. I didn’t want to do it. My friend kept asking me to write this stranger so I finally gave in. The rest is history. This total stranger became an acquaintance to a friend to a good friend to a very n dear friend to my moving from Hawaii to Florida to marry her. Again happy anniversary!!!

It’s easy to see not only th love, but also the friendship between you. I think it’s important to not only love someone, but also like them if you’re going to live with them the rest of your life.

  79. Your post today reminds me of something Charlie “Tremendous” Jones would say. If speaking to a couple he would ask, “How long have you been married?” Whatever the answer was, he would say, “Oh! Those are the worst ones!” He meant, of course, that married life just keeps getting better. But he would have you dumbfounded for a bit. (I sorta have a feeling pranky Matt might not ought to have had me post this. You can block this!) Anyway my wife is my best friend. Bless her heart! (Course we know what THAT means in Southern.) She probably does need prayers and may have asked for them but if so I never knew it. This troubled world needs stable homes and families and each and every one does make a real difference. Congratulations!

    1. So did my parents, Jeffrey. They left during a movie, walked to the preacher’s home, and got married. The preacher’s wife was the sole witness and attendant. Mama told us “the license was burning a hole in his coat pocket.”

    My Jimmie and I will celebrate 42 in October. He has always put his family first. We met coon hunting. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for us that was within his power. He’s a keeper like Matt.

    It’s a big accomplishment to stay married nowadays. It doesn’t mean we’ve never been angry, but we choose to work it out and honor our vows to each other and God.

    1. Debbie, our wedding anniversary would be on Oct. 26. We married in 1974. I especially like your last paragraph, that was exactly the way it was in our marriage. I loved to joke, I would tell people we only had one argument in all the years we were married- it started on our honeymoon and never stopped! I buried lot of the joking, my joy of living and many other things when I buried my wife. Without her I survive but no longer live. Sometimes I feel like it would be easy to end it if it was not for my son and two grandsons.

  102. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary, seems like staying together for any length of time is almost unheard nowadays. This year would be 52 years for me and my wife plus almost 3 years of dating. I had went to church with my wife and her family all of my life. One Sunday night in January of 1972 my eyes locked on her during the night service, after the service I ask her if I could call her and it went from there. She was 16 and I was 17. She has now been dead for 5 years and 4 months. My heart still belongs to her, I have no desire for anyone else, no one of earth can take the place of her in my heart. I liked to tease her and would tell her God punished me for looking at the girls that night at church and not listening to the sermon.
