It’s been a long time since I shared a What is it? post, but a few months back I received the following email from Melanie.

“My husband helped a man work on his food truck yesterday and was paid in Estate sale leftovers. There are a few pieces I can identify- several nutmeg graters, one with an attached catchment box. But this one I’m sending to you has us bewildered. I tried to show it in its various “unhinged” configurations. Whatever it is, it’s a pretty neat little gadget and looks like it’s been plenty useful. I’m hoping you or those who follow you can shed some light on it for us.”

I haven’t a clue what the piece is. My only guess is that it is some sort of kitchen tool. If you know what it is please leave a comment and let Melanie know.

  1. Looks like a mediaeval torture device! Gives me the willies just to look at it. I hope you warshed it good before you handled it.

  2. I’m pretty sure Louanne is right. I remember something like this hanging next to my G-Mama’s old wood cookstove (she called it a “Granny Stove”) along with tons of other gadgets, but I never thought to ask. I ended up with the stove and a bunch of the gadgets after she passed, but that one is missing or was already long gone. The difference in hers was that it was more of a weathered silver color…like it was made out of pig iron or something cheap–not cast iron.

  3. They may still be making them. I think the one I saw on Etsy had plastic type of coating on the handle, if it did I don’t think it would be vintage. I haven’t ate enough grapefruit in my lifetime to make it worth $45. When growing if we couldn’t grow it, we didn’t eat it- could not afford to buy it. Now for the next question, how do you use it?

  4. I shall have to take what others say as I am certainly clueless. My next questions would be; who made it, where and for how long? Meaning I wonder if mass produced in quantity or was a low number of total output and localized distribution. Who, back in the day, had grapefruit? Would that mean just FL and CA?

  5. Glad to know the mystery has been solved. Please let us know how well the pulper work. Thanks!
How is Granny today? I continue to ask God to comfort and heal her.

  6. I’ve never seen one of these but after looking it up, I do believe Louanne is correct.

Enjoyed last night’s video. Not everyone can make good homemade sausage, but Papaw Tony’s looked delicious. Enjoyed the story about the countertops. That’s a wonderful idea! Very creative and it sure saved a lot of money too!!

  7. I always say it is a Do Daggy! I don’t know where I got that word from and I could have made it up!lol My family generally knows what I mean when I say it ,thank goodness.
Those breakfast sandwiches looked so good last night!

  8. I had no clue but figured it was some kind of food press but it was to big for garlic. Then I read the comment about it being a grapefruit press. I guess they’re right, but seems strange back in the day they would press grapefruit. Maybe oranges, but I guess some might have pressed grapefruit too. Maybe it was simple called a citrus press, because I can see it being a way to squeeze out lemons or limes too. It’s differently interesting looking! Fun “What is it” post! Thank you for sharing!

  9. I had no idea! Learn something everyday. Matt can cook breakfast for me anytime. Sandwiches looked delicious. Prayers for all. Take care and God bless ❣️

  10. I’m glad to have an answer about our mystery object. We had just put it away, figuring we’d never know, but keeping it because, well, we’re keeping folks…as my father-in-law used to say “ No telling’ how much it would cost to buy one new.”
Thank you, Tipper and Blind Pig readers for solving this mystery.

  11. Prayers continue for granny as well as good wishes and sisterly love in our Lord! Good morning all. Is looking a device up considered fair or “cheating” just a wee bit? Lol. I doubt few would’ve guessed without peeking. What an interesting device, though. Today, we live in a society where nothing is invented and the drive to create useful things is dead. I wish all the old folks could see what I see. They’d turn over in their graves.

  12. Have never seen this gadget before! Interesting to find out what it is.
Tipper, in your video last night, was it Miss Cindy’s birthday? I felt as though you were thinking of something or you’re just plain worn out. Praying for you and your momma.
Everyone have a great day. Blessings!

  13. Enjoyed last night’s video but couldn’t believe Matt didn’t put a tomato on his breakfast sandwich. I wondered if during his use of game cameras he’s ever seen a big cat…mountain lion/ cougar?

  14. I came here thinking I would be the first comment with the answer but I see Louanne W is an even earlier bird than I! I believe she is correct and it is a grapefruit pulper tool.

  15. I’m not sure, but some old timers might say it is a thing-a-ma-jig or a what-you-call-it. Have you ever heard these two sayings?
