rack of cookies

I’ve always been a fan of chocolate chip cookies. And I’ve been making them since before I was married. I’ve tried lots of different recipes and even made the refrigerated kind once or twice.

I never had a favorite recipe, I just tried this one and that one. Most often I used the one that you can find on the back of a pack of chocolate chips.

A couple of years ago I came across either a video or a blog post that was titled chocolate chip cookies three ways or some variation of that. I wish I could remember where I found the information but can’t.

Anyway the creator of the piece went into great detail about what made chocolate chip cookies more cake like or more flat and crispy. I can’t remember what the third option was.

I knew the crispy cookie was the one for me. I tried the recipe and I’ve been using it ever since.

Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 2 ½ sticks of butter softened
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 ¼ cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 ¼ cups all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Cream butter and sugars. Add eggs, mixing well after each. Mix in vanilla.

Sift together flour, baking soda and salt.

Add dry ingredients to sugar egg mixture and thoroughly incorporate. Stir in chocolate chips.

Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets (or use parchment paper) and bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or till golden brown around the edges.

Funny it took me over thirty years to find my go to chocolate chip cookie recipe, but now that I have I’ll never make them any other way.

  1. Just got last pan of the chocolate chip cookies out of the oven! My husband says they are delicious and it’s a keeper recipe! Unfortunately I have Celiac Disease and can’t eat them, boy my house sure smells good though! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

    1. We are a celiac family. That is the same recipe that I use – my daughter brought it home from her home economics class this year. Three groups of students made each type and then taste-tested and voted which they liked best. The students didn’t even taste the difference in the gluten-free flour that my daughter’s group used. You have to try this flour…it is amazing stuff….gfJules All Purpose Gluten Free Flour. I can make all of the old-time family recipes with no problems. https://shop.gfjules.com/products/gfjules-all-purpose-gluten-free-flour-1-5-lbs-pack-of-1

  2. I haven’t baked cookies in ages, but you sure make me want to start again, Tipper! My Occasional Helper baked me a plate of gingersnaps at Christmas as he’s done for a few years now, because his gingersnaps are the best ones I’ve ever eaten in my life, and I had to work hard to make them last a few days 🙂

  3. Happy New Year!

Matt’s such a good deddy no doubt (like my husband is) he too had to go see if the sleepin babies were in need breathin….. and he wanted to master his responsibility as the deddy, not so much worry always, just wanted to be the best to our babies…..which got to his sleep.

Thank you BOTH for just chit chattin and allowing us to love you!

I CANT SAY IT ENOUGH, ITS SUCH A BLESSING TO US AND WE ARE APPRECIATIVE!

  4. When our daughter was under 10, I would engage her in the kitchen making chocolate chip cookies while her mom dealt with Christmas wrapping and other seasonal preparations. I thought it was fun; not sure that she did. She celebrated her 11st wedding anniversary yesterday. She doesn’t like to cook but she does like to bake.

I’ve saved that ccc recipe and will try it.

Yesterday, for the New Year’s Day meal we fixed a spiral sliced ham, black eyed peas and mustard greens. I didn’t fix the usual collards and turnip greens because I couldn’t find any that looked decent. I did open the last pint of ‘kraut that I put up over a year ago. It was good with the peas. No cornbread. I missed not having any.

  5. I watched your video showcasing these chocolate chip cookies and I knew needed your recipe. I am looking forward to trying it Tipper and will let you know how it goes. Thank you MUCH.

  6. Thank you Tipper for your chocolate chip cookie recipe. The cookies look delicious. Matt is surely a fan and my Matt ( my husband) will be too.

  7. Thank you Tipper for your chocolate chip cookie recipe. The cookies look delicious. Matt is surely a fan and I think my Matt (my husband) will be too.

  8. Tipper–Sounds yummy, but for me chocolate chip cookies absolutely cry out for a handful of black walnut meats to step them up a notch (and another handful added to the batter in the form of raisins ain’t bad).

  9. My husband loves chocolate chip cookies! I asked my family what they wanted cooked for Christmas and that was his only request! I’m going to make a batch & freeze the cookies so we can bake just a few as we will eat every one we can get our hands on!

  10. That recipe looks pretty much like mine. I like it when the cookies spread out. I don’t care for chocolate chip cooks that just sit there in a lump, lol. The secret is the butter, which makes everything better. Okay, I need to get busy and quit visiting, I have a coop to clean, a house to clean , and I need to bake bread today. Have a great day y’all. Blessings, TeresaSue.

  11. I watched the video last night when you made them cookies. I think you know Deer Hunter’s weakness…lol…he was eatin them cookies up! Thank you for sharing your recipe with us!

  12. Love to make chocolate chip cookies! In fact, I made them for our Christmas Eve get together with our family. Before the grandkids left, they asked if they could have some to take home for Santa that night. Christmas day I found out that they indeed left him those cookies and some milk and told me that Santa ate all of them!! I told them I was honored that Santa liked my cookies!! Tipper, I enjoyed your video last night. My brother loved old guns and he would have surely loved Matt’s. I agree with Miss Cindy, I sure have enjoyed the pictures of the Christmas cards this year. They did look old, and I enjoyed them all. Have a wonderful day everyone!!

  13. Tipper, you have found a fantastic recipe for chocolate chip cookies. (When I saw the amount of butter, I knew it was a recipe for me.) Besides crispy homemade chocolate chip cookies, I’m thankful for my Kitchenaid mixer to give these “tasty nugs” a good, stiff mixing! Thanks for the recipe share. During the next cold snap, I will try these out. It’s warm right now ( unseasonably unreal) and candy from Christmas is on sale everywhere and it’s it’s free or reduced- it’s most likely for me!!! I ain’t proud and I’m proud of that! Lol

  14. These cookies look like they may be my next favorite cookie. I love how they look – snappy and buttery. Once I’m done dog sitting today, I’ll make a batch. (They sit in my lap while I YT. Fun but fattening.) LOL

  15. I really enjoyed your video last evening. Tipper, you and Mat are so real and so much like family visiting with me. The cookies look so good!! I made many dozens of cookies his holiday season but it makes me want to make more. I pray your channel and the twins channels continue to grow and thrive! Praying for all who are hurting, physically or emotionally. God bless you and yours.❤❤

  16. I’ve always found the the crisp cookie comes from beating the fat and sugar until it’s light and fluffy. Conversely, if you do that to cake it will be hard as a rock. Soft cookie beat less, chewy cookie bake less.

  17. Thank you for sharing your CC cookie recipe. I will give it a try. And, I agree with Miss Cindy, the pictures on the Christmas blog look like old timey cards. They sure were pretty.

  18. Your discussion last night of New Year’s Day traditions was interesting. We live near Cherryville in western Gaston County NC, an area highly populated by people from Germany. They brought with them the tradition of New Year Shooters. A group of people in the community go to various homes and businesses in the area and fire their black powder muskets while performing a chant. This is supposed to keep the evil spirits away in the new year, but, of course, is mostly for fun and camaraderie.

  19. I checked my CC Cookie recipe, and both were near the same ingredients. I know why yours are crispy while mine are soft and chewy. It’s the cooking time that will make the soft or chewy. Mine only cook 9-10 minutes and are just barely brown around the edges. But you know that’s why they make green shoes. Cause somebody likes them. Yours are going to be delicious and appeal to those that like crispy. Now I’m craving some CC Cookies, so I think I’ll make a batch this week. Thanks, Tipper, for sharing!

  20. I’ve eaten those cookies of yours and they are absolutely wonderful! There is a very rich flavor about them so keep up the good work!
I’ve sure enjoyed the Christmas pictures in the blog this year. They look like old Christmas Cards and there is a feeling of “old timey” about them.

  21. Those chocolate chip cookies looked delicious on your YouTube video and my wife wants to try the recipe. A really good chocolate chip cookie is wonderful treat. Thanks. for sharing the recipe.

  22. Homemade anything is unbeatable. And homemade chocolate chip cookies are far superior to any mass produced on the store shelves. I have been so busy the last several months that I have not had time to do much cooking at home, not as much as I wanted to. I have eaten out more than I have eaten in, and my taste buds have finally revolted. My meals have all tasted like reheated cardboard for too long now. I have gotten lazy and use to the convenience of already made food, so that will be a recent habit that I will have to break. The other week I was thinking how much I missed my measuring cups in my kitchen! They are calling my name, asking why I have forsaken them in a very sad voice. Hopefully now that life appears to be calming down again for me, I will reacquaint myself with all the wonderful treasures in my kitchen cupboards! I know the ham meal I made yesterday was absolutely delicious. Your chocolate chip cookies would have been the perfect ending to that meal, maybe with a bowl of homemade tapioca pudding, too. Thank you for this recipe!!

    Donna. : )

    1. Donna, tapioca pudding is one of my favorite special treats. We have a wonderful Chinese buffet here that always had it on the desert bar. It’s gone!! ! I hope it will appear again soon. When I make it here at home I want to eat way too much of it.
