listening to the radio

Are you a radio listener? If Chatter, Chitter, or The Deer Hunter are in my car-the radio is on and turned to some honky tonk country station. But if I’m alone, I’m listening to a cd-and if I do turn the radio on-it’s usually to a news talk station.

Back in the day, as a teenager, I listened to the radio a lot-remember Casey Kasem’s weekly top 40? I looked forward to the countdown all week and rarely missed it. If I was at home-I’d lay on the bed and listen to see who hit number one or if I was at Granny Gazzie’s little house by the highway, my cousins and I would listen to see if our favorite song made it to the top of the charts.

This week my house has been all about the radio-strange for someone who seldom listens to it.

First up: Paul and Pap were invited to perform live on David Brose’s radio show this coming Saturday. If you’d like to listen you can-the radio station streams live over the net. Go to: WYHG.

David’s show “The Mountain Valley Homecoming” airs from 12:00 till 2:00pm. Paul and Pap will perform during the first hour of the show from 12-1pm. (the times mentioned are eastern standard time-so depending on where you live you may have to convert to your time zone)

Second: I was invited to be a guest on a live radio show this Sunday by Paul Ward of Saltcreek Life. Paul’s promo sums it up better than I can: Tipper from “Blind Pig And The Acorn” blog joins me as co-host for a call in trivia show. We will cover her site, Appalachian heritage, and give away some prizes. Be ready to call in! The Salt Creek Life radio show starts at 6pm central time. To listen and for more details about the show go too: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/paulsw

Third: Last night I listened to the radio as one of those cousins from Granny Gazzie’s did his job. Clint is anchor for the Malone Sports Network broadcast team. Last night it was all about girls basketball. Clint did such a great job announcing-I felt like I was right there on the court-wincing at the fouls, jumping to my feet with the crowd and urging my team on to win.

If you have time this weekend I hope you’ll listen in to David Brose’s show-I know Pap and Paul will do a great job. I also hope you’ll listen to Paul Ward’s great show-who knows how good I’ll do-but if nothing else I’m sure the contrast between my Appalachian accent and Paul’s mid-west one will be interesting.

So are you a radio listener?

Tipper

  1. Tipper that is so cool! I also am on the radio (if I haven’t already bragged), my food poetry…
I am going over and read the show info…one day we will have to do something together, I look so forward to meeting you in June when I travel down there again!
Have I told you how much I love your site lately? Love it love it!
I also love ‘Shady Grove’ and play it over and over when I am here…I have to get that CD or something…do you have others you can recommend that is in that bango style?

  2. I want to thank Tipper for the great interview. We had some phone problems and a bad static problem in the beginning. The interview was great, thanks again Tipper!

  3. Shucks, I missed listening to you on the radio, Tipper. I’m sure you did a great job. I loved my transistor radio when I was a kid. I’d carry it around with me everywhere. My husband likes to listen to talk radio, too, when we’re in the car. It drives me crazy sometimes, so I switch to an oldies station. We just found a book channel on XM, they read from books, and it’s kind of neat to listen to.I have a hollow shell of an old floor model radio that was crudely made into a bookshelf, I love it.

  4. Be careful now. Y’all are getting real “uptown” with all this exposure. I will try and tune in sometime today. Keep up the good work. I’m glad you are all getting some recognition.

  5. I’ve got one of those three foot tall radios. They are still cheap (If broken!) and refinished look really great. Wish I had the expertise to retrofit mine with some new parts! I better get back to working on the show!

  6. I remember Casey Kasem (Shaggy!) and his countdown. What a fixture! I’m not a radio person, either–though I love that I can get the radio broadcasts through the Net better than I ever could through the radio itself.

  7. Congratulations to you all on the new found radio fame!!
I’m hoping I can remember to listen tomorrow!!!
Yes, we listen to the radio all the time.
    My Captain cannot stand silence.

  8. How absolutely wonderful, Tipper! I’m so looking forward to hearing you and the show tomorrow night! Am so excited for you! What a wonderful experience!
It’s so unfortunate that I missed Pap and Paul today. Perhaps you’ll have a podcast of them, or YouTube?
Always listened to Casey too! Love my cd’s but enjoy listening to the latest songs!
Again, can’t wait to hear you tomorrow night, Tipper! Your family must be beaming with pride! :))

  9. Tipper,
This is a neat posting about listening to the radio. I like to turn the radio on sometimes, listen to upbeat music, sometimes dance with the beat. Growing up, we used to listen to the Grand ‘Ole Opry on the radio. I enjoyed this posting very much. It brings back many memories.

  10. I heard the program, it was a full hour. Pap and Paul were really good! The music came through good and strong. I think that they didn’t realize that they would be playing for a full hour. Good job guys!!
Good plug for the Blind Pig too.
I connected with the other station too, they will send me an email reminder so that I wont miss it tomorrow evening. I am looking forward to it.
I listen to the radio some, mostly country now but have enjoyed rock as well as some softer stations. I also enjoy silence. lol

  11. Remember this song
“Turn your radio on (turn your radio on)
And listen to the music in the air,
Turn your radio on (turn your radio on)
And glory to share (glory share)
Turn the lights down low (lights down low)
And listen to the Master’s Radio,
Get in touch with God (get in touch with God)
    Turn your radio on.”
My mother listened to the radio all the time, and entered contests on the radio. My sister and I were on the radio once on a program called “Curbstone College” where you could spell words for money. I remember I got the 15 cents word which was just easy, but Mary got the 3 dollar word which was mucho money in the early 50’s. The word was” correspondence”, and I remember the sinking feeling in my stomach when she asked, “Does it start with a C?”
My mother liked to listen to the big bands, and I actually had a doll named Dorsey..
I listen to talk radio usually..while I try to multi-task.

  12. Speaking of radio, I remember one that my grandparents had. It stood about 3 1/2 feet tall. Would love to have one of those!
I listen to a variety, everything but opera and new country.

  13. I remember Casey, and American Bandstand. Good memories. I usually listen to NPR, or an oldies station. My son when he is here likes to U Tube music, and we have a good time goiing from genre to genre. I will make a note to self to listen to the stations you have given us. Thanks again for the memory lane trip.

  14. We didn’t even have a radio when I was very young, but my Grandpa Collins had a battery-operated radio. We walked to his house (almost two miles away) to hear the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights. Depite the static as the show came through the mountains from Nashville to Blairsville, it was a highlight of our week.

  15. Hey Tipper: Speaking of girl’s basketball, I saw the most exciting game last Tuesday night at Oliver Springs High School, TN between the OSHS team and Wartburg, TN. OS lead the WHOLE TIME by 2 digits sometimes! BUT in the final minute Wartburg went ahead by ONE POINT. Twenty seconds was on the clock when play continued. OS had the ball and down the court they CHARGED! But Wartburg got the ball and came back down the court. They tried to make a basket – but didn’t! But it didn’t matter – Wartburg won by that ONE POINT! I was cheering for Wartburg because we had a Norwegian AFS student visiting and she had attended Wartburg two years ago. BUT I TAUGHT @ OSHS for about 8 years so I felt guilty cheering for Wartburg. I just hoped no OS folks saw my enthusiasm when Wartburg won!
I will try to SEE YOU ON THE RADIO!!! Eva Nell

  16. I am a radio listener and have it on while I get ready for work each morning. Then, when I get in the car, I have a terrible habit of constantly changing the station. My kids really love that…not. Congrats to you and your family on your recent radio fame. I think radio has really become underrated in our very visual society.

  17. I was also a devoted top 40 listener. There are some songs I hear now and remember where I was when I heard them on the countdown. I have Sirius Radio in my car, and Casey’s top 40 is replayed every weekend. They play a show from the current week in a selected year from the 70’s and 80’s. Casey’s in fine voice, and even better, no commercials! Unfortunately, I don’t have occasion to sit in my car for three hours to listen, so I catch what I can.

  18. Congratulations Tipper! I can’t wait to hear it.
I’m a radio listener just like you…I grew up on Kasey Kasem. I vividly remember the Sunday afternoon when “Band on the Run” made it to #1. Weird memory!
I also listen in the car–when the kids are with me it’s pop music. When I’m alone, it’s talk radio–usually local stuff.
But I rarely listen at home unless I’m cleaning. Then it’s oldies, the good stuff from the ’70’s!
