  1. My Mom always told me that all the neighbors would come to their house in the country on the 4th of July. Some folks would bring block ice, some lemons, others would bring ingredients to make homemade ice cream. During the Depression this was a rare treat. Mom said kid fashion, she would eat so much ice cream & lemonade that she would be knocked out on a quilt under the big oak tree. Each year she would say she was not going to do that again, but come the next 4th of July, she would do it again. I guess she was a little pig because she knew she wouldn’t get anymore until the next 4th of July. I would tell her I reckon she had a sugar rush from all that sugar & it knocked her out. The stories she tells growing up in the Depression always broke my heart. Happy 4th of July to the Blind Pig family & all the readers. I pray God blesses our country & the good people who call this home.

  2. After reading the links in today’s blog post, I was reminded of forebears.

The original member of the Hutchins clan to which I belong was John Hutchins who came from Towcester, Northamptonshire, England, aboard the Bonaventure. Some record the arrival in the Virginia Colony as 1630 others 1634.

In the War for Independence we celebrate winning today, a few generations (3 or 4, IIRC) of great-grandfathers back, of mine named Thomas Hutchins earned a pension. I don’t recall, without doing some diving into records that are well stored, where he served. IIRC he was living in Rutherford County, NC. I remember family stories that put him at King’s Mountain and others that put him at Guilford Courthouse. I don’t know for sure whether he was at either battle.

Another forebear through my grandmother’s Tabor family line was Brig. General Thomas Sumter, for whom the famous fort in Charleston Harbor was named. I discovered this while searching for information for my daughter who wanted to join the DAR. I never joined that SAR. Maybe I should just to document publicly the lineage in my application.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL HERE!!

  3. Happy 4th of July to you and all your family including the gang on BPAA and all that follow Tipper on YouTube!
I’m proud to be an American and thankful for every military person who has fought to keep our country free in the past, now in the present and to those who will continue to fight for our freedom in the future. I’m thankful for all the front line works here in our country who freely give their lives in the home front to keep us safe the best they can. I’m even thankful for the ones who are honestly trying to keep freedom in our government, which may seem to be few but there are some that actually are working to keep the voice of the people heard. More importantly, I am thankful to God, our Heavenly Father who has blessed our land way beyond what any of our past generations ever could have imagined. I pray for our leaders and all our people not to take God’s blessing for granted and to be thankful each and every day for them.
Praying for His protection to continue for all those around the world who are still fighting for their freedom. May God be with them, protect them and keep them strong!

  4. I think I shouldn’t have wrote my earlier comment. Like others, I am thankful for being blessed to live in America. I too am thankful for the freedom we enjoy. I also pray for God to have mercy on us and to bless and heal our nation. I am also thankful for the sacrifices of the ones that went before me to give me this freedom.

  5. Happy Birthday to our nation and a profound thanks to the Soldiers, Airmen, and Marines on duty today. And a special Thanks to my brothers and sisters at sea today!

  6. Happy Independence Day to you and your family. We should never take our freedom for granted. God bless America! Take care and God bless ❤️

  7. We have been listening to your reading of Alex Stewart this morning. It is a good fit to Independence Day because I think Alex had the same spirit and skills as our pioneer forebearers. And in many ways he had the same kind of life. I note that Alex said his son Sam would not take Social Security.

We have a hard time now relating to how those folks understood and reacted to government oppression. They would likely be dumbfounded at the intrusion of government into our lives and why we tolerate it. We would likely be astonished at how strongly they reacted to it and to us for accepting it. The patriots of the Revolution were, I am reasonably sure, reacting to far less government interference in their lives than we now live with every day as a common thing.

I do not post this as a political commercial or a social.commentary but rather as a tribute to those hardy souls that gave this nation birth by the grace of God.

Let us fervently hope and fondly pray on this, America’s 246th birthday, that there be a return to what once made us greater in sum than any one of us was alone.

  8. I too proudly pledge allegiance to a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC elected by and for the PEOPLE. God bless you all as I encourage you to locate a copy of The SECOND GREATEST DOCUMENT EVER WRITTEN BESIDES THE HOLY WORD OF GOD and read it thoroughly. You could be shocked at the theatrics as opposed to truth. God bless ALL AMERICANS!!! (that includes the voiceless, children, handicapped, elderly, babies, widows and orphans and those in need and especially the addicted and down and out.) God bless us everyone, Lord!!!

  9. Happy 4th of July to everyone. I remember back when in the earlier years of my life most all of the manufacturing plants would shut down during the week of the 4th for vacation. At one time the majority of industry in my area was related in some way to the textile (cotton mill) industry. Back then the mills only gave the workers one week of vacation always at the 4th of July. My family was so poor we never went anywhere. Going to Myrtle Beach, SC was the big thing for the families able to afford it.

  10. Happy Independence Day, Blind Pig Readers & Tipper! Reflect on the hard won freedoms that you enjoy today, due to the bravery, fortitude, courage, and sheer audacity of our forefathers (& foremothers). From the Revolutionary War, until today, it took people with an independent streak, and a love of personal liberty to make this country what it is. Enjoy your liberties today, exercise your freedoms and allow your ‘neighbors’ to do the same.
