biscuits with peanut butter syrup

Recently I posted an email from a subscriber who wanted to see if I or my readers were familiar with a recipe their mother made from peanut butter and syrup when they were growing up in Kentucky.

Lots of folks shared information about their knowledge of the concoction and TJ was very grateful and figured out the recipe from all the responses.

In fact here’s the email.

Hello! I hope this finds you well. I figured it out! It took a lot of mess ups and aggravation, but I got it.

Gladys’ Peanut Butter and Syrup

1 Cup Water

1 cup white sugar
(Although next time I’m going to use 3/4 cup. To bring out more of the peanut butter flavor)

1.5 – 2 Cups Peanut butter

In a small saucepan mix sugar and water.

Cook till clear and a little thicker.

Add half of the Peanut butter and whisk well.

It won’t look like much at first, but KEEP STIRRING.

When it’s all mixed, add rest of the Peanut Butter and whisk well again.

Simmer and stir for 4ish minutes, depending on how thick you want it.

FANTASTIC sopping with a biscuit.

It stores really well too. I just put it in a mason jar in the refrigerator. A couple of seconds in the microwave and you’re in for some good eatin’.

Thank you again

Warm regards TJ

I used TJ’s recipe and made some for The Deer Hunter. He really enjoyed it! I think I over cooked mine slightly and got it too thick, but it was still mighty fine. Especially if you’re a peanut butter fan.

  1. I grew up in the hills of Eastern KY – we often mixed Karo Light Corn Syrup and peanut butter and ate it on biscuits. Back then as a child, I thought it was delicious!! Hadn’t thought of that in ages.

    1. Yes ma’am! In Oklahoma it was Karo dark syrup and peanut butter on bread. Even my friend in Arkansas ate it. We pigged out at work one day. Also we would mix syrup (Karo of course!) and butter put on hot biscuits. Oh my goodness…makes me hungry talking about it.

  2. My mother-in-law made a chocolate version that replaces the peanut butter with cocoa. She just called it “chocolate and biscuits”. She would split open the biscuits and spoon it over them. It was so good and daughter has very fond memories of her grandmother making it for her. I have looked for years to see if anyone else did this, usually you find chocolate gravy but she did not use flour. Her sister made it too but sometimes she would make this peanut butter version.
    Thank you, Tipper

  3. This sounds a lot like the peanut butter fudge my grandmother used to make. She made it like regular fudge, except without the cocoa (basically sugar and water, heated to a syrup), then at the end, instead of adding butter like with chocolate fudge, she added peanut butter. So scrumptious!

  4. My grandmother and mother (from Eastern Kentucky) just mixed peanut butter and syrup together. Ate a lot of it as a kid!

  5. Have you ever mixed p’nut butter and apple jelly? Makes a good combo. Might try giving it some heat the next time I make some.

  6. I am a peanut butter purist. The thought of adding sugar or any other sweetener to peanut butter goes contrary to my very nature. I am actively seeking an affordable peanut butter with no added sweetener at all.

With all that being said I would like to suggest that all or part of the sugar be replaced by corn syrup. Not high fructose corn syrup! Corn syrup contains no fructose. It is dextrose and/or glucose. Table sugar is sucrose and is refined to a point that it crystalizes. Corn syrup does not. Adding corn syrup to your recipes yields a smoother texture which is retained to a greater degree as it cools.

  7. The recipe sounds great! Mama would fix us peanut butter with molasses for a sweet treat with our biscuits. It was quick to fix, and none left to store. Enjoyed the video last night and love the planters. I know you can’t wait to start planting in them. They are going to be so pretty sitting on the bank and I can’t wait to see what you have growing in them!! Have a great day everyone!!!

  8. When I married my husband I had never tried peanut butter and syrup together, he was raised eating it. He just mixed butter, peanut butter, and syrup together and ate it with biscuits, toast, waffles, or pancakes. No cooking but the recipe looks good. I have never been a big fan of syrup, way to sweet for me but I bet he would love it.

  9. I grew up, and still love peanut butter and honey or rogers syrup. This is comfort food to me. The recipe sounds so good, I’m going to try making some today. Thank you TJ for posting the recipe and as always thank you Tipper, God Bless you and your family!

  10. we were introduced to Amish butter in Ohio. It is a concoction of peanut butter, pancake syrup and marshmallow fluff. I guess this replaced PB&J sandwiches. Restaurants in the Amish area have it on the tables to eat with bread. My brother tells me to bring him a couple jars when I come to visit in SC.

  11. I well remember making and eating peanut butter candy as a child and later our mother also it into candy rolls. I would just slap a dab of peanut butter on my plate, pour a generous amount of sugar syrup on top and mix it around on my plate, often shaping it into figures such as animals or cars and trucks. Thanks for evoking that memory! Wishing everyone a grand day.

  12. I’m like Pam, I grew up with simply mixing peanut butter and syrup together until I got the right texture. I’d put it on pancakes, toast, rice cakes, ice cream or crackers. It was delicious. I like peanut butter, but my husband has to have peanut butter everyday. TJ’s recipe sounds good and really it’s basically the same as what I’ve grown up with except she made her own syrup instead of store bought syrup, and she eats it warm. It’s a perfect recipe if you don’t have any store bought syrup and I bet it taste even better warm on pancakes. Thanks for sharing her recipe, I’ll have to give it a try next time I make pancakes.

  13. I remember my late Daddy making this the way Pam said. Put small amounts of pb and pancake syrup in a bowl and stir till it was the desired consistency and slather it on a fresh biscuit and you had some good eating. No fuss, no muss! Have a blessed week everyone!

  14. “Roses are red. Violets are purple. You’re as sweet as peanut butter surple!” Y’all enjoy your sweet concoction although after butter on a fresh hot homemade biscuit, what more could you want? Lol bon appetite!

  15. Peanutnbutter is one of the fine things of life! I have eaten and loved peanut butter all my life! It is sounds like a very good recipe!

  16. When we were kids, we ate peanut butter and syrup often, but it was simply peanut butter and pancake syrup mixed together in a bowl. No sugar, no cooking, no storing, just peanut butter in a bowl and stirring and adding syrup until it was just the right consistency. Small amounts, eat it all, be done with it.

    1. We did the same thing as kids. When we had raisins, we added them to the mixture. On good fresh light bread, those sandwiches filled my starving belly many times.

  17. You know when you publish something that looks soooo good, we have to try it. I think this morning will be a good time to try. Also, you said your was too thick, perhaps add a few TB of water slowly and stir. Might work. God Bless
