We’ve had cool weather over the last week. I was surprised by the airish temperatures the first morning I went to let the chickens out and noticed it was in the low 50s.
The next morning the temperature was one degree cooler. And shockingly the temperature was 47 degrees when I got up yesterday morning.
It was plenty cool enough for a sweater and The Deer Hunter said he wore his sweatshirt with the hood up while he and Austin were out fishing.
Chatter told me her peppers weren’t doing no good and I told her its because they think it’s fall of the year already with this cold weather! Peppers like hot weather not airish days with a brisk wind blowing.
Back in July of 2014 we had some unusually cool weather. I remembered the coolness but not the temperature. Thankfully I wrote about it so I jumped back through the archives to refresh my memory.
July 31, 2014 it was 49 degrees in Brasstown. I have to admit that is stranger than the cool weather we’ve had this last week of May.
Has it been cool at your house? The wind is still blowing in Brasstown and I’m still saying this is the windiest spring I can ever remember.

Hi Tipper, It’s been cool here in B.C. Canada too. southern Vancouver Island specifically BUT there is a forest fire up at Sayward here on the island and I’m saying bad word because our government won’t contract the Martin Mars water bomber. I hope your garden does well. I’ve got an awful lot of comfrey and it’s liking this cool weather. It’s nearly as tall as me!
forgive me Tipper, sometimes I’m not tech friendly!
Here in northern Colorado it’s finally getting warmer, maybe. We’ve had sun, rain, hale, wind, and smoke from the prairie fires north of us. We usually don’t get our flowers and gardens in until May and don’t see veggies until later in summer. Right now it’s beautiful outside. Our forecasts here usually call for hoodies, shorts and flip flops 😉
Hi Tipper,
Well I’m pretty far away from ya in San Francisco Bay Area but it has been very odd cold weather for us here. We usually are in the 70’s/80’s but last weekend in the 50’s/60’s. Strange for sure! I love your blogs/vlogs. I’m Nebraska born but I feel a kinship with the south. Prayers to Miss Cindy and you & all your family.
God bless
It’s been unusually ‘cool’ here in central Texas this Spring, too. While our morning temps haven’t been as cool as yours, morning in the 60s this late in the year are very unusual. Even more unusual is that we haven’t had but one day in the 90s. Some years we are in triple digits in May. We also have been getting more rain than usual. While it hasn’t broken our long-term drought, it has helped a great deal.
Blessings to all . . .
Here in the Piedmont area of NC we have had cool 50 degrees rainy weather over the weekend. Today it’s up in the mid 60’s, but still raining. The rain stopped just enough around 3 pm yesterday and NACAR got to have their 500 race. My hubby watched some of it on TV. I was able to go out around noon today to pick some lettuce from the garden before a big down pour of rain hit us. The rain over the past four days has really made everything grow so big. I was pleasantly surprised at all the blooms I have on my cucumber and tomato plants. I have tiny banana peppers on my pepper plants, so I’m excited about that. We normally have warmer weather this time in May, but this year has been different for sure!
I guess I am lucky I live Hawaii. The temperature rarely falls below 70 nor over 83, year-round.
Here in North Miss. the spring weather has been just the opposite. Winter was really mild and warm came early. Lots of things budded early and grass began to green up too early for me.
We were fortunate to miss frost most days so our shrub have made it well.
Tipper, if you shot that photograph, you either got really lucky or you have a gift for composition. The bent tree lends a pleasing framing effect, and the family appears to be taking a rest after the work has been done. The elevated point of view conveys lots of interesting information about your method of gardening. Cameras can assure correct exposure, but the rest is up to the photographer. Well done, girl!
It has been about the same here in northwest Alabama. The low humidity makes it nice. Forecasts indicate warmer temps and higher humidity. Enjoy it while it is here because we have the potential in the coming weeks for it to be 100F in the shade as the Southrons here already know.
I think you are right, before the summer is over in the south,I think we will be begging for some cool, rainy, windy weather. I think the extended weather forecast my area for next week is predicting a touch of some hotter, more humid days. I have a friend that drives an 18 wheeler cross country, I asked him about those 120-125 degree days in the western states, he said to him they were no worse than 95 degree days and 90% or better humility days in the south.
We’ve had unusual weather this year also. We had a lot of rain during the winter months & the trees leafed out a lot earlier & had a lot more leaves on them. Your garden is looking so good. I would like to see a drone view of your entire garden areas. Prayers for Miss Cindy & Matt & family & also for the doctors & staff who are tending to her. Hugs!
Been really nice here in northeast Florida. Got to open up the windows for 3 days straight! And enjoyed every minute of it! Our garden is winding down for now. Tomatoes are done(planted in raised beds and buckets back in December). Had 3 pickins of our pole beans. Lettuce went wild. And I have to tell you, we have gotten hooked on Outshine Fruit Bars. And all thanks to you
Contined prayers for Miss Cindy and all the family.
We had a cool, windy and rainy weekend here also. So cool on Saturday, we had to have some heat on. I’m not used to wearing sweatshirts at the end of May. I wish the cool weather would do away with the slugs here as they have devoured the leaves of a beautiful pot of zinnias. I tried everything but nothing worked. Oh well, it could have been worse like getting into a garden. I know Corie knows all about that as I have watched her take on the slugs last year and some this year too. They surely can do some damage really fast. Continued prayers for Miss Cindy and all of you.
Tipper…I haven’t even been able to plant potatoes and onions yet here in Michigan. Partly due to all the medical runs but mostly due to how cold it is here. Fingers crossed it will be this week. A lot of folks did plant and are now replanting and I ache for them. I so enjoy hearing the stories from your dear sainted mother. She is such a sweet breath of fresh air in these very unsettling times we are in. Family is our greatest strength and support with God leading us down each days destination. The stories are icing on the cake. Jack grew up in a small Mom and Pop IGA store and the tales are funnier than any comedian could ever dream of telling! Prayers for Miss Cindy, Matt and your whole family…always prayers!!!:):):)
Here in Northeast TN it was unseasonably cool on Saturday May 27 when my sister got married. They are now in Helen GA on their honeymoon. They will probably be traveling through your neck of the woods, also.
Well, I think someone messed up the weather order because we’ve had a scorching spring with hardly any rain. We have y’all’s weather and you have ours.
Where do you live?
I like seeing all the locations, that follow The Pressley family
I’m a couple of hours from them in NWNC
It certainly has been a cool spring and the wind has been blowing since February. My garden is looking good except my peanuts, the crows ate them.
This isn’t about the weather, but I just want to comment on this picture of your yard. This perspective is a little different from the ones I usually see, and shows more of how that part of your property is laid out. You have done well in using your hillside productively, plus you maintain it nicely. I enjoy your, and the girls’, YouTube videos so much, and look forward to each one.
We’ve had a cooler May than usual in Richmond, Virginia, but I am not complaining. I have not had to to turn on the AC yet. We had one morning last week with a temperature of 48.
The weather has been off for a while at different times of the year here in Haywood county. I remember last summer some of my trees began changing colors in August! I thought hmm…has it always been this way and I just never noticed before? I don’t know but I don’t recall seeing them start changing that early before. Then this past winter we didn’t have any snow to speak of. Pretty warm for a mountain winter besides that cold snap we had right around Christmas. I have enjoyed the cooler temps this spring though! I’m sure it won’t last much longer and I’ll be burning up running the ac full blast soon enough
It’s amazing how the weather is so different from central to eastern KY. The heavy rain almost caused flooding conditions when we visited several gravesites in eastern KY over the weekend. If you’ve ever seen the cemeteries in that part of the state, you know how hard they are to get to even in dry weather. I had to send pictures back to friends and family in the Louisville area to prove the cold, rainy, and ugly weather we were dealing with in the mountains. It was gloomy and cool here with only a few sprinkles. By this weekend we will probably wish for some cooler weather, as the forecast shows we will reach our first stretch of 90-degree temps this year.
Here in North Georgia the weather has been pretty much the same as yours. My house is high, not in a holler, and the wind has been strong daily. My lettuce, potatoes and rutabagas are loving the cooler temps. I went ahead and direct planted my green beans and zuchhini May 23 and the beans are already up a few inches. The zuchhini is still thinking about it. Fortunately my raised beds are in the sun all day. I am enjoying the cool weather, though. Continual prayers for all.
We built a fire in the woodstove Saturday evening to knock the chill off the house! We live at the top of a mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Va. I had already oil the top and ready the stove for a long summer nap but the fire felt good on a damp cool night for sure. I’ll oil it again soon, as I hope not to need another fire till fall of the year.
It has been arish in Normandy, TN we used the cool days to get tough long term chores we been puttin off done. We bought a new little cub lawn tractor , we bushhog the big fields w the old farmall tractor. My husband is delighted! He loves a new power machine. Although, we do use my pappy’s & pa’s home made forged hand tools as much as possible. No more plowin w mules!
I agree. It has been a cooler May than usual here in north Georgia to. Most times here by the end of May anytime highs are in the mid-upper 80s and lows around upper 60s. But we are barely 80s and lows in 50s. It has been good for my English peas though, a better than average year, but they are all but done. Probably have posted this before but ‘average’ or ‘normal’ being a calculation, no year is really normal, just close to it. That’s what farmers have to get good at, dealing with the variations of all kinds.
Here in my little part of Alabama it was 55 degrees yesterday morning when I got up and it’s the same today. I love the low humidity and the breeze. I know before long it will be so hot and muggy outside we will be missing these days.
Yes its certainty been cool here in Clinton, TN the last few days. I also agree with you about the windiest spring, that I can remember, we’ve ever had. There’s an old pine tree close to my house and for the likes of me I don’t understand why it’s still standing with all the wind we’ve had.
No matter what the weather is I’ve learned to enjoy each day as it comes. You can’t do anything about yesterday and have no promise of tomorrow!
Sending good thoughts to all your family today.
Here in San Diego we’re in the midst of “May Gray.” Yesterday I was out gardening as the drizzle came down. My sister’s daughter lives in L. A. & sent us a funny commentary on their long run of gray, overcast weather & they called it “gloomageddon”!
Thanks for a new name for what we have down here in Florida – Gloomageddon! Overcast and looks like rain almost every day but rain never comes. Windy days are common so the garden is drying up. I have not watered the garden due to the evidence of grey skies and wind indicating rain but have now resorted to ignoring the once relied upon signal of rain soon. Now I water even when I feel a rain drop or two since the deceiving signal is lying to me. I’m glad I water or I’d have no garden left.
Haha, Gloomageddon, good one! I’m in Florida too, and it’s been dry and windy for months. Last week some of that rain that’s been threatening finally dumped some on us three unexpected days in a row. Husband and his plants are happy, things have greened up some, and we have rain lilies blooming. My gramma always had pots of rain lilies. Given the long dry spell, I was doubtful about how the mangoes would be, but they’re better than we expected. The star fruit tree is blooming so we can expect more fruit there too. A Brazilian couple showed us how to make a tasty drink with them: 1 fruit sliced in chunks seeds and all per 1 c water plus whatever sweetener you like; run through processor, squeeze through strainer, chill, and enjoy.
Great new word! I might get a chance to use it in a different sense here in sunshiny
Florida if we get another bodacious hurricane or two.
Cool, yes, although not as cool as you are in the mountains. Watching for my beans and cukes
to start sprouting. We have little tomatoes on the vines already and one cabbage is trying to
make a head. It’s planted in a flower bed to confuse the cabbage worms! Broccoli is finally
beginning to do well despite some early damage from whatever ate a few holes in the leaves
and my dill is looking good. Garlic will soon be ready to harvest, but why does my arugula
always do so poorly? It sends up a flower stalk almost before it puts out any leaves and those
leaves are no size at all. I love arugula in salads and this is so disappointing!
Your garden looks great this year, Tipper. All your hard work shows.
Tipper I was just saying yesterday that we’ve had more real spring this year than I can remember in a long time. So many windy cool days, it usually by may we shoot from 65 to 90 in the blink of an eye. And my peppers are slow to but they’ll get there, not as quick as yours though! Thanks again for my cookbook I have read through it and am going back for seconds. Loved all the stories and such a rich history from both of you. As always sending thoughts and prayers to Miss Cindy and your family.
No, here in Florida we are having our usual mid 80’s for this time of year. my husband, while looking at the forcaste said we would be getting our afternoon rain beginning this week. Normal weather for central Florida. We can expect heavy duty lighting from now on and into fall (which isn’t really fall here) lol
Tipper, I wish your channel worked like others, so subscribers could communicate back and forth with others, know when someone makes a comment, wants to communicate with you, God bless you sister, it’s ok! might receive a blessing!
cool here too! in Georgia! God bless you Tipper! God bless your family, God bless Ms Cindy with healing and health in Jesus name ✝️♥️
Yes indeed it’s been airish … and lovely. Too much heat too soon makes my gardening agony for me. We’re about 50 minutes away from y’all so your weather is our weather. Lately it’s been too dry too and we’re praying for more rain; lots of lovely rain. Those breezes stripped out the moisture from everything.
I love watching your videos and reading the Blind Big and The Acorn. And growing up in Iowa and still here. We now have wind almost every day. I don’t mind a breeze but I am sure tired of wind. And I happened to find a video where you talked about ground cherries. You need to make a pie. That has always been my favorite pie. That is what my Mom always made with them.
Karen, one of my closest friends of 45 years is from Iowa. He was raised on a hog farm before his daddy sold the farm in the early 70’s and all moved to South Carolina. We are constantly teasing one another about our differences. We met and worked together for many years at Michelin.
My peppers are cowering in their containers. They are not growing at all!!! Tomatoes are a bit better. This has been the windiest spring I can remember.
Your garden looks great!!! Warm weather will come to stay and our gardens will take off!!!
It was very cool, rainy, and windy at in my area over the weekend. I never heard for sure, but the weatherman thought it would break the all time record Saturday for the coolest daytime high .I think the high was in the mid 50’s. It has been an unusual spring, cool and wet. My garden is not doing good either, except for my few tomatoes, they are close to 3ft high and putting on tomatoes. By the way my “grocery store” potatoes are dying and I have dug under some, they did make some pretty potatoes, I am sure glad I didn’t throw them away. Tipper, your sentence about The Deer Hunter and Austin fishing together makes me think and long for all of the good times I spent with my father in law, he was one of my best friends. Even though my mother and father in law have passed on, my late wife’s family still get together and were together yesterday for a cookout and they will always include me. I dearly love all of them. I see Austin feeling the same way. Now spending ever minute of time I can with family and friends is one of the most important things I do. You never never know when it may be your last opportunity to have time with them.
Glad you keep track. There is an old saying, the first 12 days of the year tells you how it is gonna be for the next 12 months. While sometime I try to remember to jot it down on my calendar, usually by March or April I forget. It has been down to the upper 50’s down here in upstate Florida, it is 67 at 6:25 this morning. I am thinking we are getting closer to the ‘summer’ weather so that will be over very soon. Keeping Ms Cindy and your family in my prayers for sure. God Bless
God bless Florida neighbors, God bless Ms Cindy, I’m in north Georgia Lumpkin co!
