Winter Storm Forecast for Brasstown

January 24, 2026

rain

Like us many of you will be experiencing the winter storm that is moving across the country.

The forecast for Brasstown seems to change every few hours. Yesterday I watched a clip from an Atlanta station that forecasted severe ice for Blairsville GA, which is about 25-30 minutes from us.

A station in SC showed Brasstown getting six inches of snow.

Our local radio station WKRK is forecasting ice, sleet, and snow—but with little to no accumulation of any of it.

Matt said we’d just have to wait and see what happens.

There’s no doubt many people will be hit hard with ice and snow. I’m praying for everyone in the path of the storm. I especially feel bad for those who are in need, but don’t have any help. I can’t imagine what Granny would do in a situation like that without all of us to care for her.

Katie shared a video about the storm. The beginning is a humorous commercial of sorts about the weather. You can see it here. After the comedy she shares a serious discussion about the storm and its impact.

I hope the weather isn’t bad at your house!

Last night’s video: The Panther on Cold Mountain & Other Stories 9.

  1. Hi Tipper,
We started getting snow around 7 PM tonight here in the Blue Ridge. It is really pretty. It is all sparkly in the pickup lights. We drove to town just to see what it was like. Our VDOT Trucks are out really working the roads even after they pre-salted several days ago. It was great seeing them out. We are fine here on the hill. The dogs have plenty of food. We have plenty of food and lemonade mix. In case we loose power we have gas for the generator and the pickup is full of gasoline if we need it to run the lights or go out. Our propane tank is full to the library so we can have lights and heat if we decide not to use the generator. Yes, a real snow party for two old people. HA. Our sons live in Austin, Texas. They had rain and were getting ready for the freezing rain to start. It was 26 degrees there when I talked to them.
Pretty cold for Austin. Take care and stay warm. Kathy Patterson

  2. It’s bone cold here. I live in a very old house that’s drafty. I have blankets, plastic, even flattened cardboard covering the windows, bins and books pushed against the walls, paper and cloth tucked in every leak. Sleeping with a hot water bottle helps alot. Really don’t remember it being this cold, certainly not for this long. My cat is NOT happy. Prayers for all, especially Granny.

  3. I was really hoping for some snow out of this storm but in Waynesville we’re forecast to get mostly freezing rain. It’s been a light mix of snow and sleet so far, no accumulation as of yet. I just hope the power either stays on or doesn’t go out for an extended period of time. I feel for those who have no backup heat or generators. We have wood heat so we should be fine and my parents do as well. Hope everyone stays warm and fed during this mess!

  4. Prayers to all in the path of this storm. Keep watch over your neighbors, stay safe. Hope your forecast sides on snow, Tipper!

  5. I know I have broke my promise to shut up. Ron, my daddy kept an antique cast iron kettle of water on his Fisher wood heater at all times during the winter months. I have prepared the best I can, the only thing I can do now is pray and hang on. Someone mentioned being prepared ahead of time, I usually keep 15-20 gallons of non ethanol gas on hand at all times for my lawn mowers and a gas powered farm tractor and I also happened to have 3 full 20 lb bottles/jugs of propane. Our generator can run on either type of gas. Now if I only had me that Armstrong heater I mentioned a few days ago! I just saw on a new station people with heat pumps are being warned to be sure and turn them off if they loose power, the freeing ran will freeze on the fan and fan motor and break them when the power comes back on and they start up, they also said this freezing is a possibly during a defrost cycle. I have a heat pump, I wish I had bit the bullet and went with propane, but it has gotten very expensive.

  6. This winter storm is so massive. Everyone stay safe. Prayers for all of the linemen and first responders as they work in the cold.
Freezing rain to start in North Cherokee county Georgia after dark. The amounts keep changing. That polar vortex needs to pull itself back together and go back home!!!

  7. So far, we’ve dodged it, but we are under the warning until Sunday evening. Who knows? We are warm and fed. I know there are millions who will be impacted and in areas this could last for days. Check on the neighbors and stay warm/safe. Jeffery

  8. So far a lot of hype, but it is not over. We need some moisture, and the Lord is supplying. It is winter. Hope you enjoy the beauty. God truly loves us.

  9. Every channel is a different forecast. One thing is for sure; we will get something! It’s not looking like we will get any snow, and they keep changing the time for it to start. I just pray for all of us to stay warm and safe and try to stay inside. Ice is so slick, you don’t want to fall and break a hip or something. Prayers for those who don’t have any choice and have to be out in this.

  10. Couldn’t agree with you more .It seems every time I listen to the weather forecast it changes a little bit. The only thing people need to do is pray for safety and then go out if you can and prepare for the storm. While living in Florida we would get hurricane warnings all the time and we made sure we were prepared. Most of the hurricanes missed us but one year they didn’t. That year four hurricanes hit Lake Wales and we were hit hard. On my small lot if land I had seven trees go down, one in the swimming pool. We lost electricity each time and each time the outage varied on the number if days. The longest was a week. But we were prepared and did get help from FEMA with ice and water. When I lived up in NH we learned to never let your gas tank in your car get below half. We always had at least a week of food for emergencies. The old farm house we lived in had a back up system for everything except electricity. But we never had a problem. With two wood stoves and plenty of wood we were always warm. It is also important to make sure that any of your neighbors who might be at risk be looked at. But pray that no one gets hurt. No one is alone. We are our brother’s keeper. Stay warm Tipper, we are prying for you.

  11. I place glass jars of water on top of the floor vents to get humidity in the air. Refill with warm/hot water so you don’t bust the heated jar.

  12. The last weather forecast I saw showed NC getting hammered with freezing rain, and I immediately prayed that it wouldn’t be that bad in the Pressley and Wilson’s neck of the woods. I always worry that first responders will not be able to reach a person in a medical emergency. It’s looking like the Louisville area will dodge the ice and make up for it with over a foot of snow. Sadly, it will be too cold to go outside and play. My friend called to ask if he could come coyote hunting in the next several days. I thought it might be a good time to do so because the animals will be roaming freely without fear of some fool being out in this weather trying to shoot them.

  13. Blessings to the Pressley Family and all the Acorns! In my area of Wisconsin things are starting to look up. Yesterday I woke up to -15° with windchill of -35. We never got above -9° This morning is better as it’s only -10° with a high of 4 today; and tomorrow will be around 11°. We haven’t had any snow, which is unusual around Lake Michigan. I just finished my morning Contemplations and asked for safety for everyone and especially for all those who are required to be outdoors. I included all the birds and animals. The Mighty Presence takes care of us all. Be strong, Acorns! We’ll come out on the other side stronger and better.

  14. Our forecast keeps changing too. Even though I live in Texas & won’t be getting those 6, 8,10+ inches of snow, this kind of weather is not normal for us. I do have a generator, but in the middle Hurricane Beryl the generator quit working (a part went bad). Generators are just like cars, etc. They can go out in the most important of times. That being said, I prepare just in case the generator goes out. Without electricity, I have no water because I am on a water well/septic tank system. I always fill my bathtub up with water in order to flush toilets, etc. (just in case), and prepare as if I did not have the generator.
Prayers for Granny during this time and for all who are along the path of this storm.

  15. I feel a little guilty because we in Florida are being spared and will actually have near-record warm temperatures this weekend while others, including family, are getting snow and ice not far north of us.

  16. Brrrrr -3° feels like -15° here in west central IL. Snow amounts keep changing but at last look, possibly 3″ of accumulation in our area. I feel guilty about being relieved my grandkids won’t have to battle snow on top of sub zero temps when they go to work. The rest of the country, where this storm is much worse is in my thoughts. Please take your time folks and stay home unless you simply have no choice. This old girl is hunkered down and not going anywhere. Sadly, I also have covid and feel less than grand these past 3.5 days. I’m S♡ glad Granny has you all so near & I’m happy you all have each other. What a comfort!! My day, as I’m planning it will involve reading my Celebrating Appalachia cookbook and watching both of your “Pressley” channels to keep me company. I’ll just be eating with my eyes for awhile until my taster comes back online 😀

  17. The forecast for Richmond, Virginia area includes ice. I pray we are spared the ice. I can deal with snow. Our forecast keeps changing too.

  18. Randy im glad your son is there to help with the generator. Tipper you’ve got a member of the dawg nation in the holler….lots of us in the storms path will be hunkerd down like that “hairy dawg” of UGA! Praying too.

  19. As the lady said, “We’ll hope for the best and prepare for the worst.” I’m like Matt..Seems predicting ice is especially hard. Makes sense to me since we’ve probably all experienced how sensitive ice forming is to a very narrow range in temperature, humidity and wind conditions. Kinda reminds me of the “She loves me. She loves me not” routine we’ve probably all done. We have either uphill or downhill to get “out” from here and I’d rather not have to get out at all. I hope none of y’all have to get out either. If you have wood ashes, they can be sprinkled on steps, walks, paths, etc to speed up melting. By the way, for those who grew up with wood or coal heat, remember keeping a pot or tea kettle of water sitting on the stove to put humidity in the air?

  20. God be with us all, especially the vulnerable among us. The homeless, elderly, young and sick. Also, the animals. My prayer is that God has his guardian angels among us all.

  21. I feel like I just need to quit watching the news. It’s making me worried…but I can’t. Hubby and I will be fine without electric we have a generator and gas all ready in case. I worry about my mama. She lives about fifteen miles away and doesn’t want to leave her little apartment. If her electric goes out, she has no heat. So I am in the process of talking her into coming here for a night or two. It is more likely that our electric will go out because of all the trees around us. She may be ok. The ice is what concerns us all. My hubby drove in lots of bad weather including ice and snow for 40 years and never missed work because of weather. I just don’t want him to have to drive in it to rescue my mama…but, of course he would. So, I am working on her now. She’s a tiny bit stubborn. Sometimes I think we are better off to just live our lives and deal with what comes. It would save a lot of unnecessary worry. Take care everyone. May God bless and watch over each of you…and my mama. ❤️

    1. Brenda, I have the two most important items us Southerners grab first if there is the slightest possibility of snow- a big jug of milk and a large loaf of bread!

  22. Our part of NC is calling for heavy ice. I’d much rather have snow because ice takes out the power lines. We have some solar but if the sun doesn’t shine to recharge it then we’re back to no power. Praying for all to be safe and warm during this concerning time.

    1. I will try to shut up after this. I talked with a man from Maryland yesterday about the usual southern snow. He said I never understood why snow is such a problem down here until I moved down here. I didn’t understand how down here it is a wet snow ( moisture) when back up there is was more likely to be dry and more like powder. Most times there will always be a sheet of ice underneath any snow we have and you don’t brush the snow on your windshield with your hand.

  23. We’re supposed to get 5-8 inches of snow on Saturday and some sleet and freezing rain most of Sunday. I grew up in northeastern Ohio about five miles inland from Lake Erie. We had ‘lake effect snows’ which amounted to feet of snows with blizzard winds. So, I am used to bad winters. But we didn’t get ice and I think that is worse than snow any day. We recently had a propane fireplace put in so if our electric goes out, I think we’ll be able to keep warm. Also, we have a camp stove and propane stove to cook with. We have bought lots of water and a good supply of food. A bright spot is that our oldest son and his wife are coming to stay with us from near Charlottesville, VA. Our other two children live close by and are well situated to get thru the storm. I thank God for His protection and love for us. I still pray for Granny to be pain free and have peace. She is blessed to have a caring family. God bless all of you, keep safe.

  24. Woke up to 1 degree and the forecast is for about a foot of snow tomorrow. We always plan food when we are getting snowed in, today I’m making red lentil and leek soup and tomorrow hubby is making a pot of chili. Stay safe and warm everyone!

  25. my thoughts and prayers are with those in the path of this storm – may it not amount to be as bad as predicted – and it’s ‘bark will be worse than its bite’ as my daddy used to say.

  26. We’ve prepared as much as possible for this storm. We’re projected to get 10-12 inches of snow and no ice is in our forecast. Hopefully we don’t lose power, but if we do, we have a gas fireplace to keep the house warmer than not, plus we do have a generator we can turn on as well. The snow doesn’t bother me, it’s the bitter cold temps with this and following this storm for the next several days. I remember 34 years ago we had temps that were 36 below zero here, that was rough to say the least. Thankfully we help each other out in our neck of the woods, we have good neighbors and we check on each other.
    Stay safe everyone!

  27. -24 actual temp this morning where I’m at, but I’ll take that over the ice and precipitation many are expected to get. My prayers continue and I’m thinking about each and every one of you! Praying the storm won’t be as bad as predicted with no long power outages.

  28. I thought about you as I have been watching the different snow forecasts. I live in North-central Kentucky and we are supposed to get a 3-day total of 14+ inches of snow and a possible glaze of ice, As Matt says, we will just have to wait and see. Stay safe everyone and don’t go out on the roads unless it’s an emergency!

  29. Good morning Tipper, Matt and Acorns. You are so right about the forecast. We had Winter Weather warnings all day yesterday and last night. The sun was out and 42F yesterday. This morning the warning changed to 24F now and light snow for today. The local weatherman said we may have rain, sleet, freezing rain or snow tonight. LOL, I commented on his post an said he left out that it might be “clear” as well. I’m like Matt and we’ll know what it’s doing when it gets here. The folks all around NE TN, NW NC and SW VA cleared the grocery stores of milk, bread and toilet paper again. Milk Sandwiches for everyone must give folks the bellyache is what my Paw used to say. I liked Katie’s video. I keep everyone here and up Wilson Hollow in my prayers. I love y’all.

  30. In SW Ohio we are expecting 8 to 14 inches of light fluffy snow with high winds. If we get it, there will be huge drifts. I’m staying home but my family has jobs. They’re planning on closing on Monday if we get that much snow. I love the snow but hate for everyone to be in danger on the roads.
Be sure to get your sledding Tipper. I’ll be thinking of you. It looks like your area will be getting snow this morning. Ours don’t reach us until afternoon. Looks like the ice is going south of you and I.
Stay safe and I pray Granny doesn’t lose power. God bless you and your family. Gina

  31. Woke up in Central Michigan this morning with -14° with a feel temp of -24. We kept the water dripping and kept the fire going all night long. I pray for everyone that is experiencing winter weather this weekend. Stay warm and stay safe everyone.

  32. good morning, my understanding is the winter storm will start about 1:00 p.m. today, Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus, today Lord we pray that you would let this storm pass, but we know your will shall be done, we pray for our, homes, property, friends family neighbors and animals, we ask for your Divine protection Lord, we pray for for safety, we pray the power stays on, we probably know one is hurt, no lives are lost, no damage is done, no one is hungry and no one is without power, no one is without heat, strength to endure, love care and protection in Jesus name Amen, God bless you friends, God bless Granny, God bless the Wilson and Pressley families

    1. Amen and thank you for that prayer. I’m in Florida but am praying with you for others, and thank you, Frieda, for including the animals.

  33. Woke up this morning to about an inch of snow here and still snowing in north central Arkansas. It’s a dry snow. I can already tell how beautiful it will be once the light of day shines. So many are under ice storm warnings in other places and I feel terrible for them. I’ve been through those and don’t wish for another one. Will pray for those in the path, for sure. Stay prepared, warm, and safe if you have to get out on roads.

  34. I don’t think in my 52 years that I’ve ever felt -20 degrees with wind to boot. Until I just took the doggo out. Two plus feet of snow headed to my seaside spot. The stray black cat lost his mate and he’s alone. We all feed him. Then I think of our large homeless population nearby. I hope they take advantage of the warming centers and shelters. Blessed to have all I do. God bless

  35. I’m glad it doesn’t look like y’all will be hit too hard. We are in the deep purple “catastrophic” zone. We’ve prepared as much as possible, but mostly I’ve been praying all week that the Lord will just lift this storm up into the atmosphere so that no one is harmed by it. I know He’s the Master of the Sea and is able. I’m just praying He will…and, if not, give us grace for enduring what comes. So much love to y’all from SC, your friend, Jane ❤️

    1. Jane, I am seeing and am in that purple zone. It is very concerning for me. I don’t want to come across as being mean or hateful, but I hope this satisfies everyone that has been wanting something like this, there is no fun or enjoyment in it for me and I expect many others. No Tipper, that is not directed at you, pure snow is not as problematic. I am no longer young and all I see and think about is the danger and problems weather like this can cause. I expect by Monday we will be reading about people dying from this storm. Now the forecast has flipped back to heavier ice accumulation.

  36. Yes it seems like the forecast for me (Greenville, SC) keeps changing. I have just read the latest and right now, it seems like they are not forecasting as much accumulation and the temperatures to be cold enough to freeze but not as bad as they have been forecasting. Except for Sunday, the daytime temperatures are forecast to be above freezing and sunny. In my younger years, I was better prepared to for this type of weather, but now in my older age I am unable to prepare as well. The bright spot for me is it happening on the weekend and my son can be with me. Now for a little bit of my humor, there are 3 tv channels in my area that I watch, I joke and say if you don’t like the weather forecast, change channels, it will be different on another channel! I pray for all of us, weather like this is no joking matter, especially for the older, elderly people. One big concern for me is loosing my power. I do have a generator big enough to run a few things but being able to use it is a major problem for me because of not being able to get around with this arthritis. My son will be able to help me with this. This generator was a lifesaver during the power outage from Helene.
