Corie caught a cold at the beach during our recent vacation. She was over it in no time and so was Woodrow once she shared it with him. But when they shared it with me the cold turned into a full fledge sinus infection. I’m finally beginning to feel better I think.
I’ve been taking a lot of naps during the heat of the day and one day when I was feeling miserable I was reminded of an old song Pap and Paul used to sing called “Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar.” It was written by The Delmore Brothers.
The Delmore Brothers were among Pap’s all time favorite groups. He enjoyed their playing and singing, but as a songwriter himself, he was totally blown away by their song writing skills.
The duo were farm boys from Alabama. Their heyday was in the 1930s and 40s but their songs are still popular today especially in bluegrass and old time circles.
They played radio shows, were members of the Grand Ole Opry, and were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
You’ve likely heard some of their most famous songs:
“Blow Your Whistle,” “Freight Train Boogie,” “Browns Ferry Blues,” “Midnight Special,” “Southern Moon Shine Down Again,” “When It’s Time For The Whippoorwill to Sing,” “I Won’t Be Worried Long,” “Sandmountain Blues,” “She Left Me Standing On The Mountain,” “Happy On The Mississippi Shore,” “Put Me On The Trail To Carolina,” “I’ve Got The Big River Blues,” and more.
Like many of the songs we do “Gonna Lay Down My Ole Guitar” is a mournful tune. After hearing Pap and Paul do the song one of my aunts said ” Well that sure is a sad song to be singing.” Her point was valid, but somehow I’ve always been drawn to the sad songs and I guess Pap was too.
Might sound a little weird but my sinus infection has made me feel very thankful. I’ve felt miserable. In fact it’s the worst one I’ve ever had.
But my short bit of suffering has had me counting my blessings. Having a sinus infection is short lived and trivial when compared to the many folks who deal with chronic health conditions with no end in sight. I’m beyond blessed to be healthy.

Hi Tipper and Acorns. Being sick or suffering has no degree, it all counts the same. We can all look forward to our end in this world. To turn and find yourself standing in Paradise beside our Savior is the greatest gift our Father could ever give. No thought of any of this. The Glory of His presence and our love for Him is all we will need until we stand before GOD for eternity. Whether I’m having a good day or a bad one, that is what gets me thru it, because they are both the same till I go home. I love y’all.
I was expecting something different. The only thing I’ve heard with that line about the old guitar in it was from a concert at the Ryman sort of introducing the music from the movie, Oh, Brother Where Art Thou. The sinus mess that has been going around is mean; we had kids dropping like flies with it all last week at school and then hubby caught it. I started taking elderberry capsules immediately, and so far I’ve escaped it, praise God. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Hope you feel better real soon. My granddaughter started 8th grade 3 weeks ago and she’s got it and so many already are out sick with it. Even just a plain head cold is rough in this heat. Lots of nasty viruses are going around also. Thank you for sharing this song. Paul and Pap sounded wonderful!

I love listening to Pap & Paul singing together and this is another ‘good’n.’ I think as with all things there is a ‘time’ for sad, bluesy songs and a time for more upbeat, happy songs. It depends on our mood and if we are laid low or feeling well. Glad to hear you are over the worst of your sinus infection Tipper – they certainly can be nasty sometimes.
I actually loved this song and felt my toes start tapping and felt like I wanted to cut a rug! I think it’s a dang GREAT song-actually one of my favorites so far! Tipper, I’m sorry to hear about your sinus infection. I pray you are completely over it at this time. Mine got so bad, my right ear ached and my right eye swelled shut a day or two. It got knocked out with a Zpak antibiotic which is a FEW pills that work on for several weeks afterwards. It rained a bit here this morning cooling and refreshing so I’m thankful for that! At my age I’m going to take a nap every day that I can and fell no guilt about it. It actually helps me not to get so tired and pooped out. Prayers for anybody and everybody sick and in need. Jesus is real, he hears and he cares about all our concerns. He alone is the way, the truth and life of us all. America certainly needs Him like never before. He alone is EVERYTHING to me.
Im sprry you have been sick! Glad you’re on the better side of it now. Been a lot of that going around. I pray for everyone’s healing from all these ills. Please pray for my baby and me. I have had preterm labor symptoms going on and am having to lay around as much as possible to make them stop. Baby needs to stay in one more week for our midwife to be able to attend his or her birth here at home. We are ready to go to the hospital if need be, but we would be so happy if we could do this at home again. I am putting it all at the Lord’s feet. He knows and cares for us all. He will do what is best for everyone.

Job called human life “this sore travail” that we are given to be exercised in. And at the time that is what he was experiencing (as do we all at one time or another). I’m sorry you have been feeling poorly and hope you fully recover soon. I have noticed about you though for a long time now that no matter what is going on with you and yours you still have sympathy for the troubles of others. My Mom was like that. Her own troubles were small to her and the trouble of others larger. She was a good nurse. If we should think the good Lord gifts the world with people too good for it, we would just be affirming scripture.

Gosh, nothin like summer cold or sinus infection when it’s so hot! We’ve had near 100* days here in E Central IL, for 6 days straight. My husbands hayfever kicked in with a vengeance this morning, I hate it for him. He’s had it for 33 yrs, every fall, since he turned 32 yrs old. Take care!

I am glad to hear you are better. That junk is really going around here to. I spent 3 days fighting it off and when to the clinic Friday. I didn’t want to give it to our anyone especially our special needs daughter Sayward. We pick her up every weekend for church on Sunday. She cried because we couldn’t get her yesterday. She really takes sickness hard. We had gone to Carvers Apple Orchard a few weeks back on her yearly visit to get her a honey bear and some apples. She said for me to drink some green with lemon and honey to make my throat feel better. I was surprised she remembered my giving that to her one time. She said I could have half of her honey. Then she said I could use it all. lol I to have a lot of allergies and have to take a pill each day and get 2 shots every 3 weeks. I have done this for close to 30 years. I get fluid in my ears and get this sinus infections. It leads us to recognize how wonderful God made us and what an amazing gift he gave us to have medicine and doctors who can help us. I have turned a corner I think. May God bless this day for you all.

I am glad you are beginning to feel better. I have been laying around and could hardly walk for the last two weeks with a very sore ankle but it is better for the time being. Now at my age I don’t need much of an excuse to take an afternoon nap. The actual temperature in my area for the last several weeks has been in 95-100 degree range and when the humidity is added in, it feels over 100 degrees. Yesterday the actual afternoon temperature was 100 degrees going by gauge in my car while I was out trying to do some errands. Like you, when I am laying around complaining about my ankle, I get to feeling guilty thinking about the ones that are far worse off than me. My father in law was a musician, he wrote his own song about his Gibson guitar and how he thought his family might not understand why it brought him so much joy.
I wrote about my friend Kenny a few weeks ago and him being told he had cancer, he called me Friday after meeting with his doctor to tell me he was told he it was low grade and would be very slow growing right now but could get worse later on. Please continue to pray for him.

Tipper, I’m so glad you are feeling better. I have sinus infections from time to time because I have really bad allergies & that goes into a sinus infection. I always have to get antibiotics to clear it up, but you are so right about sinus infections making you feel terrible. Did you have to get antibiotics? Hope you all stay well & have a safe & enjoyable Labor Day holiday.
