Appalachian Slides

slide made from hay bales

Over the weekend we went to a friend’s annual fall shindig. We had the best time! There was all sorts of things for kids to do including a couple of homemade slides.

The boys really enjoyed themselves.

Seems like kids are born knowing how fun it is to slide. Woodrow and Ira love to pull my couch cushions out till they are leaning on the couch and then slide down them.

I got them a little tykes slide for outside but they enjoy the cushions more.

When I was a girl Martins Creek School had one of those old metal slides that are really tall. I loved to slide down it over and over. I’ve not seen one like that in a long time.

You all know I’m always hoping for a big snow so I can go sledding which has the same sensation as sliding.

I’ve heard folks say they had a lot of fun sliding down broomsage covered hills on a piece of pasteboard.

Another slide I loved when I was a girl was one with water gushing down it.

There was a waterslide out in Ranger at Pied Piper back then. They had a snack bar and seems like there was a pond with paddle boats. We made lots of church trips to the place but all we cared about was the waterslide. Oh what fun we had. It even had a tunnel. I haven’t a clue what happened to it nor when it closed down.

For a time there was a waterslide in Murphy, but unlike the fiberglass one at Pied Piper it was concrete. I only got to go to it a few times before it closed. It was fun too, but it was easy to get scraped up on it if you fell off the mat.

One year for my cousin’s birthday she got to go to a waterpark and invited me. We had a great time but there were so many people I much preferred my memories of Pied Piper and the race up the wooden steps to go one more time before we had to leave.
