Bonita White Sweet Potatoes

We finally got our sweet potatoes dug and are really pleased with the harvest since we had a rough start when planting them.

I ordered two bunches of slips to plant. As soon as they arrived I took them out of the wrapping and placed them in a bucket of water on the porch till we had time to plant them. Something happened to one bunch. I looked every where in the yard thinking something must have pulled them off the porch but never found hide nor hair of them.

We planted the other ones but none of them lived. Not one.

After I shared our sweet potato woes a dear lady sent us a whole bunch of slips that she had started herself after seeing how much we loved white sweet potatoes. We planted two of our raised beds with the slips. One bed didn’t grow anything but a couple of vines, but the other bed produced well.

When I was growing up we ate sweet potatoes fairly often. We all enjoyed them. Granny and Pap especially liked the white ones.

In recent years Granny loved to stop at the produce stand in Peachtree. She’d always check to see if they had white sweet potatoes. A few years ago Matt and I decided to try and grow our own.

There are several white varieties available online. I chose Bonita because it is my aunt’s middle name. We liked them so much we’ve been growing them ever since.

White sweet potatoes are less sugary than the orange ones, but have a really nice flavor.
