solve learning riddles from appalachia

Today I’m sharing a riddle from Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties by James Still.

Spell “butter” in 4 letters.

The last one I shared was from Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties by James Still.

I found a thing good to eat,
White and smooth and ever so neat,
Neither flesh, nor fish, nor bone,
In three weeks it ran alone.

The answer was an egg. Several of you got it.

  1. I saw a couple of folks said goat and that makes sense. My first thought was it only has 4 different letters already with the “t” being repeated ‍♀️

  2. Goat since it butts you when you ain’t looking and sometimes tries when you are.

When I first married (in a few days it will be 41 years) we went to my husband’s grandparents and they had an old goat. We pulled up and it was going to try and start butting the car. I reckon he could see his reflection. That thing scared the far out of me. It follwed us all over that holler. They got rid of it cause it got Grandpa down and then got Aunt Carol down and her with child. Good riddance.

  3. Tipper, I thought I would share the dream I had last night.
My wife (Brenda ( and I were setting down for supper here in W.V. When we heard a knock on the door. I opened the door and my eyes got as big as silver dollars. Standing at the Door were You, Matt,Katie and Ira.
I said “My lands look who it is” come on in this house.
Matt said “Tipper looks like we picked the perfect time to show up. Supper time”
You told Matt you know we already ate before we left the house.
Of course I insisted you all eat again. Matt said “You don’t have to ask me twice”
I don’t remember what we had to eat except at the end of the meal we had bannana pudding.
Matt said “My gosh that was good” and thanked Brenda.
Tipper you saw a trophy of a baseball player that our daughter Cheyenne had won many years ago. You told me how Pap used to coach baseball years ago.
Brenda, Katie and Tipper and Ira went into the living room and started discussing your favorite Bible verses.
Matt and I stepped outside. I asked him how long it took you all to make it to W.V. He said “Oh just about 5 minutes is all” It was a dream so I never questioned him. But in reality it is about a 5 hour trip I believe.
We talked then about fishing and I told Matt I knew some great spots not far from here.
He said “He would have to come back and do some fishing ” I told him come back anytime. I then woke up. Had a good laugh about it. Then shortly after 6 AM I read this Blind pig post of yours. Just thought I would share my crazy dream.
I have never met you all. But a few years ago my wife Brenda met Tipper. Corie and Katie if I knew how I would show the picture she got together with you all.

  4. my granny used to put oleo on her bread. actually she would say oleo margarine

    1. Denise, during WWII (which I remember) many food items were rationed. Oleo margarine was substituted for butter. It came in the form of a bar like a stick of butter and was white. Included with the package was a yellow coloring material that one mixed with the bar to make it look like butter. Some time after the war, margarine was sold in its current yellow colored form.

Another factoid: Margarine is a petroleum based product, not animal or vegetable. The manufacturers ran a propaganda campaign for years saying that real butter would clog arteries. This caused many people to stop using a natural product in favor of the artificial one. Heart attacks increased during this period. I cannot say with certainty that the 2 facts are related, but they are highly coincidental making them suspicious to me. We stopped buying margarine and only use butter.

Kudos to those who came up with the, to me, ingenious solutions.

  5. Well my parents would tell us that when they were growing up there wss no butter or their parents could not afford to buy it so they used “LARD” as butter. So I can spell butter as my parent did in the 1930’s with only four letters as butter. Can’t wait hear the answer. Great riddle. Have a blessed day.

    1. When I was growing up we couldn’t afford to buy butter but luckily we had a cow that provided it as a byproduct of her milk. We had hogs to make the lard too. We were backward and poor by standards of the time.
