solve learning riddles from appalachia

Brad shared today’s riddle with me.

What is the one sound that can make a dog come, a horse go, and a man stay?

The last riddle I shared was from Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties by James Still.

Ready to walk, long tongue, no talk.

The answer is: shoe. Several folks knew the answer.

  1. I agree with Jackie, the answer is the “smooch” sound. It fits all three scenarios. I thought about you today Tipper. We cut into our first ripe watermelon. It is so good. Wish I could send you one!

  2. At first I thought is was a whistle. That definitely brings a dog in but then also the horse. I’ve had horses and when they are far out in the pasture a whistle will bring them in. The sound you make to get the horse to start up is more of a smacking or kissing sound than a whistle. I have never felt the need to whistle at a man.
So I’ll answer the question like the Brad wants it, a whistle, even though I know is is questionable. Had he said ” What is “a” sound that can make a dog come, a horse go, and a man stay?” then the riddle would be right too!

  3. The only thing I can think of for all three is a kissing sound. It’s probably the wrong answer—but I use that sound to call a dog, I have used it to get a horse to go—and of course, my hubby will stand still for a kiss anytime. LOL.

  4. It’s been so long from the last riddle I don’t remember if I guessed it correctly or not. LOL
As for this riddle, my first thought was a whistle, that’s just a wild guess. A whistle calls a dog, it can scare a horse and if a man whistles at a woman that’s not his wife, well that could cause him to stray, but I honestly don’t know if that’s right or not. It’s going to be interesting to see what the answer to this riddle is.

    1. Christine, whistling at a woman, one day at work in the 70’s a coworker whistled at a woman coworker and hid, she cussed out the only man she saw, he was completely innocent. We laughed until we hurt, even the innocent man. Nowadays someone would probably be fired.

  5. Tipper, I made a comment about your post from yesterday about June Apples. That post has “ caught me so off guard. Is it a coincidence or not ? My husband Dan said , “ You’ve got to ask her!” Either way, it’s interesting…check my comment.

  6. Good morning!
I would have no idea on this one. I’m sure it’s easy, but I’m not very good at riddles, although I did know the shoe.

I’ve surely missed all y’all. I have a lot of catching up on the blog. We’ve been having a lot of goings on.

I want to give y’all some updates.
B got to go to the Florida keys for her Make A Wish trip. She had a great time and ate crab legs every day. Her mamaw said she is tired but doing well. She has quite a few tests coming up the end of the month. I’ll let y’all know how that goes. Praying the Lord is moving for her miracle!

My brother in law that has lymphoma found out his aorta needs repaired. He is really tired from his treatment and now faces this. He is discouraged and needs prayer.

I do have a praise report. Our uncle that pastors the church in Walton Ky had several strokes a couple of weeks ago and had surgery that didn’t go well. He went in laughing and cutting up and came out in poor shape. He was given two to three days to live, on the 12th, without life support. His wishes was no life support. He is still with us and they had him standing a couple of days ago. We are praying the Lord will continue to heal him.

I will go back and read through to pray for y’all’s needs. God is so good! I appreciate all y’all!! Have a beautiful, blessed day!

  7. I am guessing whistle.

Ammons, I didn’t see your reply concerning Roundup until last night. I do not use Roundup, I use different “copy cat” brands bought at farm supply or similar stores. I buy concentrated 2.5 gallons for about 45-50 dollars and mix it 3 ozs to a gallon of water. If my math is correct that will make about 106 gallons . That is around 45 cents a gallon. All of these copy cat brands I use are the same formula as Roundup-41% glyphosate. Something I don’t understand is why Roundup catches all the heat when the other brands under a different name are the same formula and nothing is said about them.
