I Got A Little Snow

January 11, 2025

man standing in snow

We only got a small amount of snow, but I love it so much I’ll take it. The accumulation was enough to cover most of the driveway but not hardly enough to cover the weeds and other growth around the house. I’d guess about two inches.

Our area hasn’t received much snow over the last several years. Christmas of 2020 was the last good snowfall that I remember. Last week we were visiting with friends and like me they were hoping for a big snow. Their children got sleds for Christmas a few years back and haven’t got to use them yet.

I love the stillness snow brings to the land. We went on a hike and The Deer Hunter never saw one track. He said the animals were all holed up and laying low. Like most snowy days there was lots of birds flitting here and there.

I was hoping for a big snow but I’m thankful for what we got and I’m hoping it’s priming the pump for more to come before winter is over.

  1. You have more snow than we have in Southern New England. I think the first snow of the year is always the nicest and most welcomed next to Christmas Eve snow.

  2. We got about the same amount of snow, here in Georgia. It was so beautiful falling! I always enjoy seeing, but I don’t have to drive in it! I used to always make a snow angel but being in my early eighties and no one around in case I had trouble getting up, I decided against it!

  3. We got about 4 inches here in Northeast Georgia (Banks County). Enough for me to make some snow ice cream for my Mama to enjoy yesterday afternoon. She’s been on hospice since November. She passed away last night. Today (the 11th) is her Birthday. She would’ve been 75. I sure do miss my best friend but I know she’s having the best Birthday and reunion ever.

  4. That’s looks like a pretty good snow Tipper. I guess we got bout 1 1/2 . It’s pretty. First big one we’ve had.

    1. Good morning! I just watched an older episode where y’all were going ramp digging. I’d like to ask you if you’d please do a little more research on taking the roots. I’m a 67 year old Cherokee woman and we always teach to leave the roots. You find your patch and angle the blade down and “figure” when to slice. After a few tries you’ll go pro. Thank you in advance. I know you have a huge following, me included, and I feel like you’ll listen.

  5. Happy to hear it. Down here in south, coastal Georgia, the last time we got snow that amounted to anything was December 23/24, 1989. What a great Christmas gift for us. It was only a few inches, but enough to shut the whole region down. Wish we would get another.

  6. I’m glad you got some snow, Tipper. We got less than an inch, then some sleet/freezing rain here in the Triangle part of NC where I am located. The sun is shining so most of it has melted except in the shady areas. That was the first measurable snow we have had in three years!

  7. Oh, I was really hoping you’d get a deep snow. I enjoyed Katie’s video with you and Matt talking about your snow memories. I’m losing my eyesight, so I have some neat functions on my phone. I had asked Google if Brasstown had gotten any snow. It told me you had received snow, but didn’t tell me how much. I’m with Matt. I’d be afraid to hurt myself if I went sledding. I hope you make a video if you take a walk in the snowy woods! Enjoy!!! ☮️

  8. There’s 5-6 inches on the ground here in Anderson County TN and will freeze tonight with a temperature of 18 expected. The sun is shining making the snow almost look like granulated sugar. It’s beautiful.

The only tracks in my yard are from the neighbors cat who visits daily!

Everyone stay safe, warm and cook a pot of vegetable soup and cornbread.

Laura Lee-if the little Baptist Church is where your husband needs to serve, God will surely put him there.

  9. Good morning. Tipper glad you and yours got some snow. In Fries VA (Grayson County) we got between 4-5 inches and it’s still snowing. Windy too. I think it’s blowing in off the great lakes today. I’m making a pone of cornbread for the birds. My chickens are hold up in the coop. They don’t care for the snow. The wild birds are all over the place. Many blessings and happy Saturday!

  10. We got about an inch and a half here in High Point NC the most we’ve had in a good while probably 2000. It’s nice to see. Like you I love the stillness it brings. I went to see my mother yesterday and it started while I was there she talked about big snows she remembered there were a lot she will be 100 in 33 days, she’s seen a lot. ❄️ she’s still very sharp and enjoys watching yours and the girls videos, she likes to keep up with the babies and granny. She’s says y’all are go getters and not afraid to get your hands dirty, and she thinks Matt’s cute. At that age the filter is gone so she says what she thinks and you never know what that might be. Enjoy your snow❄️!

  11. We didn’t get much snow here in Waynesville either. About the same as y’all. Enough to turn the ground white. I was hoping we would get the 3-5 inches they were calling for but it sure was pretty watching it fall yesterday. Glad we didn’t lose power because the wind was whipping around pretty good last night. Hope everyone is safe and warm!

  12. Morning everyone. Here in NE Arkansas I measured 3.5 inches in the morning. But it snowed for hours later and sometimes heavy. I walked around looking for animal foot prints. The snow is way to soft for sledding, I’d slide into a ditch anyways. I guess you need a foot of it, to get an icy layer underneath. Bumpy driveway could hurt. But Tipper you still have time for more snow. Anna from Arkansas.

  13. I am glad for you, Tipper. May the snow you desire soon be yours in abundance.

We are rarely given snow in the Hill Country of Central Texas. But every now and then a cold snap will keep us company for a few days.

At the moment, the temperature here is 26-degrees, the sloped concrete walkways of my apartment complex are slick with ice and every car is wearing a rigid coat of frost-covered ice. When I stood on my porch this morning, I thought about sliding down the walkways, carving greetings in the frosted windshields, and even practicing my smoke signal skills with my white puffs of breath.

Then I came to my senses.

    Kinda.

I stayed on the porch for while and puffed a series of two puffs and a pause. Puff, puff. Pause. Puff, puff. Pause. Puff, puff. Pause. What does a two-puff smoke signal mean? “All is well.”

All is well, indeed. Even in the midst of trouble, toil and hardship, all is well because we are safe in God’s kind and capable hands.

May God bless you, One and All.

  14. I came home to 12” on the ground Thursday and received another 3” last night! Still a few flakes falling. I flew home from Scotland (after a month there) on Thursday. We flew into Atlanta then up to Columbus, Ohio. We flew up the Appalachians. We flew lower than normal because of upper level turbulence. Those old mountains sure were beautiful. We started with a slightly hazy view of them. That turned into snow on the tops, then clouds began to gather. Over West Virginia we were flying over just clouds—puffy little balls of beauty, by the time we reached Ohio the clouds had cleared and we saw the snow. I don’t know how anyone could not see the beauty of God’s hand in those hills and mountains. After seeing the snow clad hills of Scotland it was easy to see how my ancestors felt the Appalachians were “home.” Take care, Tipper, and enjoy the snow. I love snow and understand your desire for more. Blessings and prayers to your entire family.

  15. Tipper, praise the Lord you got some snow, it is so beautiful. The snow started here (Bassett) about 2:30 pm on Friday evening 1-10-25, the heavy snow fell until close to 2:00 am Saturday morning, then it changed over to sleet and stopped around 7:00 am. I think we got about 4 to 5 inches. My sister who lives in Knoxville Tn said they got the heavy snow to; they ended up with about 6 inches. I wished that I was able to get out there in it and build a snowman.

  16. Yes! Happy for you Tipper, that you at least got few inches of snow. It might not be enough for sledding but even a little snow seems to bring a quietness, a stillness, a hush; and beautifies the world around us for a time. You did get enough for making snow angels, so that’s something, 🙂 and just a walk through your lovely woods would be wonderful. Enjoy!!

  17. You still have plenty of time for a big snow before Old Man Winter decides to get out of town. The little boy down the road got a sled for Christmas and hasn’t been able to use it either. It’s not the lack of snow that has kept him indoors but the frigid temperatures that can’t find their way out of the teens and 20s for a high. It looks like we got another 4-5 inches yesterday and last night to blanket the 8-10″ underneath. I love looking for animal tracks in the snow. The tracks I can see around my house are made by my German Shepherd chasing deer.

  18. Good morning Tipper and Everyone else this Saturday morning. I’m tickled pink that you got 2 inches of snow!! Yeah for you.
Here in central Oklahoma we received 3+ inches, other parts got at least 8 to 12 inches of snow this past Thursday. Still on the ground as you would expect it’s a balmy 23 degrees feels like 13. Yikes!! My sking days are over and back then I expected to be cold with lots and lots of snow!!
Matt was saying no tracks…can’t blame the animals in laying low, that’s is how I feel…. it’s all about hibernation!
Tipper, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being you and always sharing your family with us.
Please give Granny and Lucky hugs and kisses from all of us…praying for them and all people dealing with all the destruction on going.
    In Jesus name Amen.

  19. It’s beautiful! So glad for you to have some snow, Tipper! Between the ice storm last week and regular snow that fell yesterday, we have about 8 inches on the ground here in Central KY.

    1. the weather app says here in Shawnee we got 5″ but I dont think it is that much–it wasnt enough for me to safely get snow to make ‘ice cream’ but then I like the snow to be deep before I either eat it or do like my mom use to when she was a kid and put it in a glass and pour a short coke over it

  20. I got about the same as you, maybe a little less. It was just too cold to snow. It didn’t get above freezing here yesterday.

  21. I haven’t measured, but I think we got 3-4 inches. It was beautiful while falling and like a winter wonderland now. It’s supposed to warm up tomorrow and will probably melt some. Then it’s supposed to be in the 20s tomorrow night, so that means icy surfaces Monday morning .

    1. Hi. I’m from New England and gave never heard of a short Coke. Is that just a small bottle or small amount? I’ve never poured it over snow. Does it make something like a Coke snow cone in a glass?

  22. We’re getting about two inches up here in Massachusetts. Where I live, snow is simply a pain in the neck. LOL. However, when I was a kid, I used to love sledding with my father and brother. Of course, I also lived through the blizzard of 1978. That blizzard shut down the entire commonwealth. I remember Michael Dukakis broadcasting on TV in a sweater. It’s the first time any governor appeared on TV in a sweater. LOL Enjoy your snow TIpper.

  23. Your snow looks lovely. We got several more inches last night and it’s still looking like a snow globe outside my window. Yesterday, the main roads were finally clear enough for me to take my Mama to see my dad in the nursing home. It was still a little iffy walking from her apartment to my vehicle. I certainly don’t want her to fall and get hurt too. She had really missed dad so much, as we have been pretty snowed in for a week. She still called him, and I don’t think he realized it had been that long. He was just happy to see her—And me—but mostly Mama. He is well taken care of and settling into his new room. It’s tough on them after being married and basically inseparable for over 66 years. But God is good, and everything is gonna be ok. I just love all this snow too, Tipper. I sure hope you get enough to sled. It’s been so cold we couldn’t even go sledding here much yet. The high today is gonna be 24, but the wind is making it feel much colder. It’s still great to walk in, and hopefully tomorrow will be warm enough to play in. Have fun!!!

  24. We got some, too! I’ll never forget my daddy waking me up on winter mornings when it snowed the night before saying, “Look outside, Baby! No school today!” Every kid in town spent the whole day sliding down the mill hill, carefully avoiding the mill pond!

  25. I would love to send you the 6-8 inches we got, I hate snow and cold weather, that’s just my opinion but I think it also has to do with what they call old age, it definitely seems a lot colder every year.

  26. Here on the Cumberland Plateau, we got about 5 inches of snow. It’s the light powdery stuff. I hope you get a good snow this winter.

  27. So glad you got some snow and glad also that you can enjoy it because it doesn’t cause you all worry since you are prepared. That is a good feeling for each of us, that we have redeemed our responsibilities. I went to Barbara League’s website yesterday and read a lot of it and looked at the pictures. That took me to reading about Stokeley’s. Ended up being quite a journey. Sharon has distant relatives in that country. One branch of the family stayed there, another moved on to KY and then Missouri. In my reading I discovered that the Stokeley Memorial Library in Newport had Helene flood water problems and is in temporary quarters.

  28. We only got about 2″ of snow also here in East TN. Just enough to shovel but not enough for sledding. There really is a peace / quieting down of everything that comes with snow. I believe that’s a gift we are given from God because He knows how much we need it. Be safe.

  29. There is a hush and stillness to snow that I think adds to its beauty. It causes us to slow down and enjoy what God has sent us. Cold weather and snow is what helps hard red winter wheat thrive as well. We can always use the moisture. Glad you’re enjoying just a bit of snow like we are. We got 4 inches here in central Oklahoma. It’ll be gone in just another day or two.

    1. They grow “soft” red winter wheat here. That’s the kind that makes the best Southern biscuits, cookies and cakes.

  30. Tipper we got maybe 2 1/2″ of snow over here in Scaly Mountain. Then we got freezing rain last evening, so everything is pretty much sealed to everything. I love how it clings to the laurel and lays in the tree trunks. The wind is really up this morning & it’s 20, probably feels like zero! Not looking forward to walking my dog. With the temperatures so low I think it will last several days. Enjoy your snow.

  31. LOVE the snow! Carried a rural mail route out of my own vehicle and loved the snow then too! It was an opportunity to meet people at the mailbox that perhaps you were the only person they’d see that day; or the next. Was sometimes an opportunity to help. Got a 30 minute “lunch” and could spend it ANY way I chose.
I hope everyone carries supplies in their cars; like blankets, and socks, and a snow shovel, and a first aid kit, and food and water, etc. CB’s or GMRS (FAMILY license with no test) radio- works when cell phones, etc won’t. I’m a relatively new ham, which I highly recommend. But GMRS is a GREAT opportunity.
I miss shoveling Mom and Dad’s driveway. Well, was glad to do it but miss Mom and Dad. Knew the whole time what an honor it was to do a small thing for them who had done SO much for me and the family. In the last years, Dad couldn’t or we’d have done it together. It was GREAT to follow his lead. And of course there was the time together afterwards. Oh…
We probably have 6″. We had 2 or 3 yesterday, then it snowed all through the night. Not supposed to get above/much above freezing through next Thursday, so it’s here for a while. I cleared the cars before dark and ran up and down the driveway (about 500′) a few times, but surely with the cold will be a challenge. I’ve never had a 4 wheel drive (ironic…) but put the studded snows on the extra set of wheels on the front of the front wheel drive van and should be able to get around. It’s what I used on the mail route and NEVER got stuck. I did have to back out of my tracks many times.
Have 3 barns with critters bedded down in good straw. So thankful! Will give extra hay; even pull out some alfalfa for the girls. Have cantelopes for the chickens to cut up along with a bit of extra scratch to go with their pellets. So thankful!
Great woodstove with great seasoned wood. Brought up some ash from where all the ash trees died a few years ago like the American chestnut trees did about 80 years ago. That ash burns HOT; will miss it too when it’s gone. Yes, there’s locust for hot wood, along with a lot of wild cherry and oak, etc. Have NEVER had to cut down a tree with so much wood available already down; but would.
So be kind. Help each other if/when you can. A kind word goes a LONG way. So does a cup of coffee or chocolate and a biscuit or a pie. Happy New Year!

  32. We got a scuff of snow and a little drizzle of rain on top. Just enough of both to ice things over this morning. I’d much rather have a good snow than to deal with ice any day. Enjoy your snow and hope everyone stays safe and warm!

  33. Here in E Central IL we have over a foot on the ground. We got 8” on Monday and another 4” yesterday! It’s beautiful, but has its drawbacks. I drive an hr one way to babysit my grandbabies and that hour took two hrs last night. I had granddeddy Kel with me so that made the drive nice. We were literally following traffic going 15mph at times and rarely got over 35mph, on roads we normally drive 60mph, that part I do not like!

    1. Lorie, I drove many times either to work or coming home (17 miles) at around 25- 30 mph. The traffic would be flowing smoothly with no problems UNTIL an idiot would try to pass everyone driving 50 mph. Usually a little farther along you would find them in a ditch. My wife had this happen to her one morning on her way to work, someone passed her and some other cars in a 4 wheel drive Jeep, about a mile or so farther on he was off the road in a ditch. I ask her what she did, her answer was “ he was standing outside beside his door and I could tell he was not hurt, I just tooted my horn when I went by!” A woman with an attitude!

  34. Between the snow from last Sunday into Monday and yesterday, we have about15 inches on the ground. It’s the most snow we’ve seen in several years. It’s beautiful and like you said, when it’s coming down it, creates a stillness and quiet around you. It’s so peaceful! Hopefully you all will receive more snow before this winter is over.

  35. Tipper, I was hoping you got enough to sled. We received about an additional 4 inches. The roads were terribly slick when I ventured home yesterday evening.

I agree, the stillness when it’s not blowing is so calming. My favorite thing to do if it’s coming down easy is to walk outside and listen to the quiet.

My husband always says “listen”. Wonderful sound of peace! When we were young and he worked way up in the dark he would come home after a big snow and want to go walking in it. The moon would light the snow up like glitter had been sprinkled everywhere. Magical.

God bless all y’all! I pray you’re safe and warm wherever you are! Randy, I prayed your grandson made it safely in. I love that we can pray and lift each other up here at BP&A!

    1. Debbie, he did make it home safe and was told to not try to come in this morning. But he may have lost his power for awhile last night. I have not talked to him this morning. He has been working 10-12 hrs 6-7 days a week for several months, I hope he is sleeping in this morning and getting some much needed rest. The roads were a lot worse this morning than yesterday because of icing over during the night. Just like Cayle wrote yesterday, driving in pure snow is one thing, black ice is a whole new ballgame. Thank you for being concerned about him. Read my early comment and please pray for my friend, Junior.

  36. Maybe an inch of snow here in north Cherokee County GA. Mostly a wintry mix which created a sheet of ice on yard, pasture, etc. Don’t think we’ll really start thawing until tomorrow. Enough snow and ice for me for this year. Enjoy yours.

  37. I’m so glad you got some snow. It sure is pretty, but I love it when Spring arrives.

I’m not sure what my Spring will look like this year. We are waiting to hear from a little Baptist Church to see if they want my husband to be their pastor. It is in the community that he grew up in and he still has some family around. If we go there, my garden sure won’t be the same. BUT I can put that energy into growing in a new place (new to me).

  38. Thanks for sharing! All we got in the coast of SC was cold rain! I am hoping for snow someday too. Until then I will enjoy the pictures others share. God bless you and yours in 2025. I really enjoy reading your blog each day and try to watch all the videos too.

  39. We did not get very much either, probably less than an inch before it turned into a freezing rain later on in the afternoon. I have just looked out the window and see that everything is covered in ice this morning. I am grateful all of my family is safe at home and will not need to be on the road this morning. Back in the past, I would have had to try to drive 17 miles to work this morning or would have been trying to get home after working the graveyard shift. I saw something yesterday that warmed my heart, I had many red birds around my feeder before the snow begin to change to rain, red birds were special to my mother and grandaddy and now me. They are my favorite bird.

I am praying for the ones still suffering from Helene’s destruction and now the fires in the LA area of California. I ask everyone to pray for my friend and former high school classmate, Junior, he needs emergency surgery but is too weak to have it and can only be given morphine for pain. It does not look hopeful for him.

    1. Randy, I will lift Junior in prayer and I’m thankful your grandson made it in safely. I pray he gets some rest, too!
