It’s time for this month’s Appalachian Vocabulary Test.

I’m sharing a few videos to let you hear the words and phrases. To start the videos click on them.

1. Bad row of stumps: a person facing trying circumstances. “I’m sorry for them. With him losing his job and her taking sick they’ve sure been in a bad row of stumps.”

2. Beardy: having a beard. “I bet you’ve seen him before, he’s a big ole beardy man that always has overalls on. Nicest man you’ll ever meet.”

3. Beholden to: obligated or indebted to. “I’m beholden to him since he helped us with the corn. I told him I’d be over Saturday week to help him cut wood.”

4. Benasty: to soil or befoul. “They’ve let that pack of dogs benasty the place till no one will ever want to live there again.”

5. Bestest: best. “She was my bestest friend. I was so sad when her family moved away.”

I’ve never heard bad row of stumps but I really like it. I’ve heard benasty, but not very often. The rest are beyond common in my area of Appalachia. Hope you’ll leave a comment and let me know how you did on the test.

Last night’s video: Eating Fried Bologna on Light Bread in Appalachia | I Almost Forgot the Onions!!

I heard from Larry (AWGRIFF). He has been very sick from the treatments he is taking. Please remember him in prayer.

  1. Mama and Daddy always said “That is going to be a hard row of stumps to hoe.” Or “you are going to have a hard row of stumps to hoe if you do ___________.” So I’ve heard that all of my life.

  2. Tipper, I’m so glad you heard back from (AWGRIFF) Larry. I miss his comments. I’m praying for him and his family, and I’m so sorry he’s having to go through so much sickness. I’m praying for your eyes too, Randy.

  3. I have never heard of benasty but I have heard of the others. I am so glad you have heard from AWGRIFF and will be praying for him. Randy, glad you got a good report from the doctor. Hang in there, you will get better.

  4. Hadn’t heard benasty and bad row of stumps. Regularly use the others. We say a bad row to hoe for bad circumstances.

  5. I use & still hear all the words except benasty & bad row of stumps. So glad you finally heard from AWGRIFF, and I will continue to pray for him-that the Lord will hold his hand through the treatments & until he has recovered.

  6. Eye doctor did a lot of test, nothing new showed up pretty much the samething I already knew. Could take up to 3 months to heal and very limited driving as much for legal issues as for seeing in case of an accident. Thanks to everyone for your prayers

  7. Beholden and bestest are the only ones I’ve heard. BTW, after last nights video, I’m craving a fried baloney sandwich. You make everything look so good!

  8. Thanks for the update on AWGRIFF; I was worried when you said you contacted him but had not heard back. Will continue to pray for him.

  9. I have never heard bad row of stumps or benasty. I have heard beholden and bestest but not very often and I don’t use the sayings myself. Beardy or beardy face is common around here.
I included Larry in my morning prayer and will continue to ask the Lord to heal him and make him stronger each and every day.

  10. Never heered benasty ner a bad row of stumps. I’ve had a tough row to hoe here lately. too If hit hadda been stumps I don’t spect I’da still been here. Hoeing can be brutal but grubbing stumps will kill a body I don’t keer who you are!!!!

  11. I’ve only heard beholden all my life. Be nasty is a good one and who can argue with beardy ( although I’m sure some would- mainly the don’t say beard crowd cause that makes ya a hater…. utter ridiculousness)lol. Once my real daddy grew a beard and since it confused me on him being him, I wouldn’t go near him. Can you blame a kid for knowing what they know?

  12. I love the word Beholden. Use that one quite frequently, myself. Although, I don’t like being in that state of owing someone something! Don’t really want anyone feeling that way towards me, either, now that I come to think of it.

  13. I love all those expressions and am familiar with every one except benasty. Now I know what to call those awful messes!

  14. LOL…remember those well. The only one I have never heard was Benasty. Describes the situation perfectly and hearing them used in a sentence is perfect.

  15. I have really only heard of one and that is beholden. Lately I have been beardy. I did shave last night because of going to doctor today. After retiring I went from from shaving everday to 2-3 times a week unless I am going off. I can not use an electric razor, it breaks my neck out.
Patty Hansen, I left a relply to you, last night about your comment. A short version, I will remember your suggestion about using clothespins and I was so ugly when I was born daddy took look at me and went straight home and shot the horse, mother fed me by sitting me a corner and shooting my food to me with a slingshot. I never out grew this ugliness. I also had big ears that stuck out. I remember to this day the pain it caused to me when I was picked on or teased about this in grammar school. One reason I will never tease anyone about a physical problem they may have, only if they laugh about them selves. My reply was probably too late or outline for Tipper to post.

  16. I’ve never heard benasty and bad row of stumps but they both seem like good words/expressions to me. We do have a colorful language!

  17. I am praying for Mr. Larry Griffith (AWGRIFF). I miss reading his comments! Thank you for letting us know the reason he has been absent, Tipper. Thank you for another great vocabulary list!

    Donna. : )

    1. Tipper, I missed the reason for Larry not posting. He has made some mighty nice and kind reply’s to me. He is well thought of by me.
