Appalachia Through My Eyes – Garden Overseer

granny sitting in chair in garden

Yesterday Paul and Granny were out in her little garden when Katie, Ira, and I went for a visit. Granny had already picked her beans and was watching Paul dig some of her taters. I was pleased to see how well they made.

Granny set in a chair and directed the rest of us. She pointed out beans she’d missed and told me to run get them. She cautioned Katie about watching Ira to make sure he didn’t get hurt. And she told Paul how to dig taters even though he’s done it all his life 🙂

I know she enjoys being out in the garden and even just sitting nearby overseeing what the rest of us are doing.

I didn’t think about it till later in the day, but there were four generations of our family together in the garden. Seeing Ira help put potatoes in the bucket while his great grandmother smiled about it would have tickled Pap to death. It made me pretty happy too.

  1. What a beautiful picture. You should put this on canvas. It would be a treasure for years to come. Such a wonderful opportunity for your family to be so close knit and share God’s love. Y’all are truly blessed and a blessing to all of us as well.

  2. This post makes me cry and laugh just knowing the blessing you have in Granny. She looks so pretty as she supervises the garden work, and the memories of my own mama are so vivid. I can picture her as she guided me through gardening and harvesting. I don’t think she ever wore a cap, just a straw hat. She’s been gone for 25 years now but I think of her (and talk to her every day).

  3. It’s so sweet to see Granny’s beautiful smiling face today! I love that the whole family is enjoying the garden. I have a mess of green beans to string and I sure do wish my Mawmaw was here to help me. Love every minute of every day. They fly bye so fast!

  4. How special it is to have four generations right in front of your eyes doing anything together!!!!! I am blessed to live in my maternal ancestral home where five generations of my family have lived and loved. My great grandparents were the first to live on the land in a different house that was torn down in the 40’s. My great great grandparents lived across the road, so really, six generations have lived on the land. My house is built on the same foundation footprint as the original house, with an addition on both the right and left sides. My grandmother, my mother, I and my two children took our first steps on this property—me and my children in this actual house in the very room where I sit writing this comment. Indeed I know how you feel—there’s definitely no other feeling quite like it!!!!!

  5. Beautiful imagery! Family, truly is one of the Lord’s sacred blessings. My own Mama is at the point of life where she sits and observes more than she can do, and I treasure every moment I am allowed to have with her. God bless you and your family, Tipper.

  6. what a joy and blessing to see this picture of Granny and to read your comments—it helped lighten the mood the day had brought me (talking with the daughter of a dear friend of over forty years who found out not even two weeks ago she has end stage pancreatic cancer and is already to the point of not having her wits about her, not eating, just failing fast) then my brother sent me a picture of the headstone he had made for the brother we lost in April–my Aunt telling me they will be going to Texas tomorrow to see her stepson who is in his last days also from cancer…….so seeing Granny’s beautiful face and hearing of a few moments in time involving four generations lifted my spirits–and reminded me of when my grandma handed out orders and directions to several of us (because she could no longer do things herself) I know you are probably still beaming with joy and pride from Ira putting potatoes in the bucket to Granny with her stick running ramrod over things…what a joy and a delight

  7. What a blessing! For you all and for us who got to enjoy it here! ❤️ Makes me smile ear to ear imagining you all out there!

  8. Wouldn’t pap just be so happy about that! I know he is. Granny looks good and the happiness on her face says it all. My great niece my sisters granddaughter just was visiting with my mom her great “nana” as she’s called. She turned 100 in February and is still doing well enough, her mind is still good which is such a blessing hearing is poor so talking louder is a must. Thank heavens for closed captions on the tv! That granny is a wonder I hope she enjoys all of her gardens bounty. Human and veg.

  9. I absolutely love everything about this post from the beautiful picture of Granny to all you shared of such a special day, Tipper!! Y’all are so very blessed to still have 4 generations who can gather and enjoy such days & times.

  10. My heart longs for times with my momma, daddy, brothers and my sister. They have been gone for quite some time now. I also miss all my grandparents, aunts and uncles and, of course, my close knit family of cousins. When they all were here our families were always getting together for picnics, barbecues, Christmas’s and almost all the holidays and celebrations. Those were the days that we took for granted. I now wish I would have recorded each and every time those gatherings happened. I’m so grateful for my now immediate families our children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and my precious, handsome great grand-boys, there is three. Can’t forget the in-laws either. We should all remember this, as you always do Miss Tipper, taking pics, recording memories and relishing the fact that family is always a blessing, treasures and life. Of course everyone has problems in their lives but today I chose to remember the best of times. Love to you all Miss Tipper and especially Granny and all your family too. They have kind of become our stand in family. Thanks for sharing. God bless everybody and have a great weekend, WITH YOUR FAMILY!!!

  11. What a blessing to have four generations working and enjoying the garden together! I could just picture you all laughing, talking and just enjoying the beauty of the day God had given you all. It blessed my heart too and made me smile just thinking about it. Thank you for sharing your day with Granny and your family.

  12. Granny is so pretty in her element. Out in the garden, watching her family around her must have been a joy to her heart. Those are precious memories that will never be forgotten. God bless Granny & all her generations that follow her.

  13. What a beautiful picture of Granny for all of us to enjoy this morning!! I just love all her pink and her camo hat. My grandchildren love to go to the garden with their Pap and find treasures. The other day they came in the house carrying five cucumbers they had found. They were so excited! Everyone—from small children to older folks— want to feel useful and needed. I am sure both Ira and Granny felt that way with you all in the garden—Just a beautiful memory for the whole family.

  14. Oh what a ROYAL blessing you have, Tipper, right in your little paradise! Four generations of Wilsons is a wonderful gathering indeed and I know you will remember yesterday all the days of your life! Please, please do what granny tells you to or else she’s got a mighty big wooden stick of correction and the pink flamingo metal walking stick in case number one should fail to enlighten one. Granny IS the queen of Wilson Holler, the queen bee, and looks just too adorable in her camo hat and hot pink summer attire. If I was you all, I’d do as I was told and quickly! Don’t give sass back either lest you regret it. Lol Blessings to you all and especially those fortunate to be gathered up with their loved ones-there ain’t nothing like love and family on this earth!!! And good food too-the total package!!!

    1. Sadie, I call your correction stick either an “attitude adjustment or encouragement stick” for reluctant children when they have been told, not asked, to do something. When I was in school 1960-1972 I called the paddles or boards “the board of education,” after the principal or coach put 5-10 licks on your rear end you had learned you didn’t want to do whatever you had did again. I think if this was still being done you wouldn’t see so many of the younger generations doing the things they do. BTW, I was a stupid or ignorant kid, after a dose of “ hickory tea” I would quickly get a lot smarter!

  15. Well that is about the cutest overseer I ever did see! Granny is precious! Enjoy ever moment!

Tomorrow my daddy has been gone 11 years. He died on his and Momma’s 58th wedding anniversary. Momma was lost without him. What a great reunion one day there’ll be. God is so good!

Y’all have a wonderful day and stay cool if you’re extremely hot like we are. We have a parade to attend. My brother in law will be riding his 50th reunion float, my brother his 40th reunion float, and my nephew his 30th reunion float(his daddy is on the 50th)….all in the same parade and graduated from the same high school.

    1. Debbie, I am quoting today’s weather forecast headlines “ 108 degree feel like temperatures through the weekend, before worsening next week with feel like temperatures through Thursday up to 115 degrees.” The actual temperature will be around 100 degrees and very little chance of rain. Reckon if we would get on our knees and beg, some of the members living in cooler places would let us come and stay a spell with them?

      1. It’s only 93º here right now, so your can come stay with me for a while. I live in the far North. Northwest North Carolina. Be forewarned though, I only have a little window air conditioner.

PS: I do have fans. Not the kind that faint when they see me and slobber all over me. These are the kind that create a breeze to keep me cooler.

  16. 4 generations, what a blessing in an evermore splintered world. IRA and Woody, unbeknownst to themselves, are storing up memories for a later time and getting a foundation for life. Makes me wonder how many generations back was the first Pressley or Wilson in western North Carolina. I’d guess just about the time of America’s birthday. Anyway, you are leaving them a rich legacy about their history. Likely they will be envied in later life for it.

    1. Ed, I don’t think you could call them fans, but people have fainted when they see me because I’m so ugly! Next Friday is forecast to be 90 degrees, it will feel good compared to temps at the first of the week.

  17. A sweet moment that I’m sure you’ll hold in your memory. Granny looks mighty cute in that hat! I’m sure she treasured that time as well.

  18. What a wonderful post for today. I hadn’t thought about the four generations being there. I can only imagine seeing Ira drop potatoes in the bucket. I also enjoy reading about Granny telling Paul how to dig taters and showing where you had missed some green beans. Granny looks great. Thanks for sharing.

  19. such a great experience and observation! I love the pic of Granny and her snazzy cane. She is so beautiful and such a blessing to not only y’all, but to me, too. I miss my Mom so much. She and Granny are about the same age. Thanks so much for sharing her with us. I know the time she spent with all y’all in the garden was a blessing to her, too.
    Great memories all around!

  20. Very nice blog. Reminded me of when I visited my parents in NH in 1994 after I had moved to Hawaii. My mother’s health was starting to fail and I wanted to spend time with her. Here I was a 49 year old man and there I was sitting in her living room being treated like I was 12 years old again. My mother made sure that all the favorite foods she and dad had cooked for us kids were there for me. We even sat in front of the TV and watched the Boston Red Sox play and argue about the players. My mother loved the Red Sox. We also discussed politics and we had some disagreements about certain issues. My mother always made sure we read the newspaper and developed our own opinions. Every meal at our house was filled with great food and good, polite back and forth discussion on sports and politics. Wonderful memories. Love your blog.

  21. I will say this to the day I die, nothing on earth more important or valuable than my faith and family spending time together. Just time together doing any and everything. Tipper, Granny has earned the right to tell you young “whipper snappers” how to do it! Now with several generations of both mine and my wife’s family “gone on,” the memories get more valuable everyday. As I get older, I realize this more and more each day. Since Thursday and through the weekend, three generations of my family are together, what a joy this is for me.
