This year, for Hank’s birthday song, I intended to team up with my good friend, Wayde Powell, III, on one of my favorite Hank Songs called “There’ll Be No Teardrops Tonight.” My hope was to sing the song and play rhythm while Wayde played the lap steel. Unfortunately, when the day arrived, Wayde was not feeling well. I hope we can reschedule it and use the song next year.

I do have an amazing audio clip of Wayde playing another song on the lap steel. I may upload it here sometime down the road.

When I found that Wayde and I wouldn’t be able to get together, I also thought about having Katie or Corie join me on this song, but that didn’t work out either. So, I wound up doing this song/video completely solo.

I didn’t realize, till I played the video back, that I was weaving in and out of a shadow while I sang. I apologize for the poor lighting.

I always thought this was a great song, one that is simple, yet moving, one that tells a great, realistic story. What else can we really say to someone who has just experienced the loss of a loved one other than to point them toward and remind them of the Promise of our Lord?

The lyrics are below:

When the ceremony was over, a lad stood alone in tears, For he had just said goodbye to the one he had loved through the years. He stood alone, with his head bowed down, as though his poor heart would break. The parson came over and took his hand, and to him, these words he did say:

When God comes and gathers His jewels, all his treasures of diamonds and gold, You’ll see her up there, in heaven so fair, when God comes and Gathers His jewels. At night when the pale moon is shining, you can see this lad all alone, With his eyes lifted up toward heaven, he’s repeating the words he was told.

Repeat chorus in first person…

I hope you enjoyed this great Hank song.

  1. Beautiful songs that I loved. I was trying to find the one where the ladies sang at church the beautiful song that I loved too “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” I could not find it here again.

  2. This song puts me in mind of another song that to me has a similar message. The title of the song is “Gathering Flowers For The Master’s Bouquet”. I don’t think Hank ever sung this one. To me Hank put his heart and soul into a lot of the songs he wrote and sung. Again this is just me but to me his song “The Lost Highway” is a son he wrote about his life. I am guessing he wrote the song, I have never heard anyone else sing it.

  3. We were not intended to die. The tree of life in the garden was not forbidden. Adam and Eve could have had it at any time they chose. When Jesus wept at Lazarus’ tomb, who was he weeping for; Lazarus, the bystanders or all us fallen people? It was our Enemy that brought death into the creation. It was Jesus who broke its power. Thanks to Paul.and Hank for the reminder.

  4. This comes at a very propitious moment for me. They will inter my oldest living brother’s wife tomorrow. She was born just northwest of Chattanooga and live for a time in Cleveland. She was a big fan of country music. She was, indeed, one of God’s jewels. She made my brother very happy for 63 years.

    Rest in Peace, Phyllis.

  5. Lovely meaningful song! It’s very touching for us now in the loss of Queen Elizabeth as she certainly was a special jewel and God-fearing lady. Thanks for sharing this video with us. Cheers!

  6. That was beautiful! Hank, Sr was always one of my favorites but I’m ashamed to say I didn’t know he had these beautiful songs. He was a man of so much talent. My 7 yo grandson was talking to me the other day and asked if I was going to go away. I said no, I’ll staying home today. Then he corrected me to say, ‘You know, Anny, I mean – really go away, and he had tears in his eyes as his voice trembled. It tore me up!!!!! I told him Yes, one day and just picture it – I’ll be going to see God and I will be so happy doing that. I will miss you and you will miss me, but you can be happy that one day, you also will go and we will be together again but better – with God. And you will get to see your Grandpa Ted and Gary and will be so glad. You are such a good boy and I know you will be a good man, one that makes God happy. By the time I was done talking, he had switched his brain to a more positive view and started talking about what he would tell his Papa’s. This song reminded me so much of that conversation last week – what a wonderful tribute to Hank!

  7. I like the song. Hank is one of my favorites singers. I like all of Hank’s songs. Based on the number of his number one songs, others did too. I heard an older man say he saw some of coldest hearted men cry like babies when they heard Hank’s song, “I’m So Lonesome, I Could Cry. This was during the Korean War. I have been listening during the last week to Hank sing “The Old Country Church”, it reminds me so much of my church during my childhood.

For any Hank fans, listen to Don Helms tell the story of the last song Hank recorded, “Your Cheating Heart”. I may have it confused with Cold Heart but I don’t think I have. You can Google this. Don was Hank’s steel guitar player.

    1. ILL never get out of this world alive was hanks last recording, your cheating heart was hanks last recording with Don helms

  8. Paul did an excellent job with this latest video. What he said in his closing, that being what else can we say to someone who has just lost a loved one but to share with them the Promise of Christ, is very true. Sharing Jesus with a hurting soul is the best comfort and hope we can give in all of life.
