Thing Called Love

January 11, 2026

Folk Art Angel holding LOVE

Six foot six he stood on the ground
Weighed two hundred and ninety five pounds
Saw this giant of a man brought down
By a thing called love

He was the kind of feller who would gamble on luck
Look you in the eye and never back up
Saw him crying like a little whipped pup
Because of love

You can’t see it with your eye, or hold it in your hand
But like the wind that covers our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of any man
This thing called love

It’ll lift you up, never let you down
Take your world, and turn it all around
Ever since time nothing’s ever been found
Stronger than love

Most men are like me, they struggle in doubt
Worry their minds day in and day out
Too busy with livin’ to worry about
A little thing called love

But when I see a mother’s tenderness
As she holds her young close to her breast
I thank God the world He blessed
With a thing called love

You can’t see it with your eye or hold it with your hand
Like the wind it covers our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of any man
This thing called love

It’ll lift you up, never let you down
Take your world, and spin it all around
Ever since time nothing’s ever been found
Stronger than love

—”A Thing Called Love” written by Jerry Reed

Paul shared the video of Jerry Reed’s toe-tapping song a few weeks ago. I just love it! The peppy rhythm has been running around in my head ever since he filmed it. And wow what lyrics!

I hope you enjoy the song as much as I do!

  1. I started listening to a new to me radio station that plays old country. I’m talking 1960’s to 90’s. I just love it. Reminds me of my Grandpa. He always had the radio on old country. Anyway I have heard a few of Jerry Reed’s songs and he sure was good! No one like him today. Have a blessed day, everyone!

  3. Hi,
Here in the Blue Ridge it is cold and windy. We are having snow flurries and a sunny day at the same time. We are suppose to have cold windy weather with weather warning until Monday morning. I love how all of us tell about the weather in our posts. It is like the old days when folks would write letters and always talk about the weather. We are doing okay. We can’t use the wood stove due to the wind so we have the monitor on. Yes, we are toasty and happy. The dogs are enjoying their dog house and the warm building we fixed for them. Yes they are spoiled Appalachian dogs.
The poem you sent today is absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful piece to share with us on such a blustery day. Sorry, but I enjoyed the poem so much I didn’t listen to the song. I will later. I could picture my husband in it so well. He was one of those big tough men from W.Va. who went to Tech. Well, he ended up being a wonderful husband, father, and father-in-law. Someday he will show his gentleness with a grandchild but we are willing to wait until she finishes school. She has enough on her hands now.
Stay warm and stay out of the woods while the wind blows,

  5. Thanks for sharing the peppy song this morning! When we came out of church, we were surprised with a heavy snowfall. The ground was covered and I was covered before getting to my car. The kids were thrilled and trying to catch the giant flakes on their tongues. After the warm temperatures last week, winter has returned to West Virginia. It’s beautiful. Have a wonderful day everyone!

  6. I hope Paul is feeling better and will be back to 100% health soon! Thanks for sharing this with us. I enjoyed it! Have a blessed Sunday, everyone!

  10. Good Sunday morning…
I love this song. Jerry Reed was in concert at the fairgrounds in my hometown when I was a teenager. My parents went to see him. Momma said he was a clown in concert but it was good.
    Stay healthy and warm…
    Blessings from Ohio

  11. What a wonderful peppy song! Yes, thank God for Love! For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have ever lasting life. John 3:16 Love to all and have a blessed Sunday.

  12. I remember hearing that song when it became popular years ago. I didn’t know it was written by Jerry Reed. There’s a lot of truth in those lyrics. Thanks, Paul and Tipper, for sharing this song.

  13. I always liked this song. My little 95 lb bundle of love (when we were teenagers and then married) filled my life with joy and happiness for nearly 50 years. It will soon be 5 years ago when I lost that love and now that “happiness” has been replaced with “sadness.”

  14. Good morning Tipper, Matt and Acorns. Ive always loved the Jerry Reed version. TY for posting Paul’s video again. It is a beautiful morning (32F) here in NE TN and we are promised snow today.
