Today I’m sharing the last of the Thankful November winners and I’m resharing a few that I’ve not heard from yet.

I’ll start with winners that I haven’t heard from yet.

The winner of the used book Dorie Woman of the Mountains written by Florence Cope Bush is Sanford who said: “Tipper, Florence Cope Bush wrote some very interesting material and would be a joy to read.
Growing up, we never considered rats serving any useful purpose, but your post made me curious enough to find out that rats play important roles in the ecosystem by helping to control waste, aerate soil and numerous other purposes. Needless to say, that does not make me a fan of rats!”

The winner of the book Letters to Lori – The Family History and Stories of Opal Corn Myers written by Barbara League is Shawn Wagner who said: “People may spurn our appeal, reject our message, oppose our arguments, despise our persons, but they are helpless against our prayers.”

The winner of Paul and Pap’s cd Live to Never Die is GV Perkins who said: “A beautiful song, sung by a truly beautiful voice.”

Last of the giveaway winners

The winner of the book Cooking with Granny Women of Appalachia is Linda L who said: “I enjoyed watching your video last night planting garlic. It’s something I’ve never tried growing. With our freezing temperatures we need to cover the dirt with about 6 inches of straw/hay, so I just get it from a friend who grows hundreds of heads of garlic. I’ve never cared for fudge but this recipe with marshmallow fluff sounds good. Have a great day everyone!”

The winner of the used book How I Saw Cherokee County written by Wanda Rowland Stalcup is Lenora who said: “If more people played in a pile of leaves, the world would be more happy and peaceful.”

The winner of the used book A People And Their Quilts written by John Rice Irwin is Danilee Varner who said: “Quilts are wonderful! Beautiful and useful! Happy Thanksgiving Tipper!”

The winners of the slightly damaged copies of Celebrating Southern Appalachian Food written by Jim Casada and Tipper Pressley are:

Gary Galbreath who said: “Sure, the food is great but the sharing of stories, reminiscing of earlier times is what I enjoy most. Happy Thanksgiving!”

Steve Staley who said: “God bless you all!”

Sally Thompson who said: “As our family gets smaller at the elder end, it grows larger at the younger end. How I miss my Mama and Daddy, and the holidays we shared. I pass on memories to my children, and joyfully see how they have kept family trafitions alive as they also create their own. We are blessed.”

Dale McDowall who said: “This drink sounds mighty tasty!”

Cathy Sparks who said: “I’ve never had Russian tea but it sounds delicious. Instead, we have wassail which is a holiday favorite that we look forward to.”

Jeanie who said: “I keep trying to win a copy of this cookbook. Maybe today’s my lucky day!”

The winner of the used book Dorie Woman of the Mountains written by Florence Cope Bush is Barbara Nichols-Dyson Miller who said: “TY so much Tipper for all you do to promote all things Appalachia. Appalachia is a region built by GOD and given to a people who have, over generations, brought the land to life in themselves. The mountains are my Holy refuge. Here I am sheltered and comforted in HIS Merciful hands. Here I was born again when I found the Messiah, HIS Son, and here my body will die and I will step into Paradise at His side. I keep every Acorn in my prayers. I pray also for the folks over on youtube and up Wilson Hollow. I feel we are family, connected thru a love for Appalachia and GOD. I love Y’all”

The winner of the used book How to Tawlk and Rite Good a Guide to the Language of Southern Appalachia written by Sam Venable is Marilyn Reed who said: “I enjoy hearing accents and words used in different parts of the country. I hope we don’t become so homogenized someday that we lose this.”

The winner of the Songs of Christmas cd by Pap and Paul is Ron who said: “Thanks for this post today. I needed it. I tend to lose sight of the end by being focused on immediate circumstances. As the old preachers would say, “I’ve read the back of the book.” We know how all of this turns out. We know all we need to know, though it doesn’t seem so to us. As 1Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” No accident that the word is “in” and not “for” but it seems to take a lifetime to learn it.”

The winner of the used book Alex Stewart Portrait of a Pioneer written by John Rice Irwin is Andrea Minix who said: “I’ve not heard of a mouth bow, but my dad would play a jaw harp. He said it was Blue Grass. I have his Jaw Harp and his Sweet Potato. Thank you for the story.”

The winners of the book Letters to Lori – The Family History and Stories of Opal Corn Myers written by Barbara League are:

Rebecca who said: “This is a great story, I can picture this scene unfolding. I like how she wrote it, especially that first paragraph. And those bites taken, sounds like something I would have done as a child. Like Randy I thought of Eve and the forbidden fruit too. My aunt, mom’s sister, had planted a small bed of tulips encircled by one of those little white landscape fencings at my grandmother’s farm house. One day my mom left me with Grandma to go somewhere with her sister. While they were gone I was outside playing with the gang of cats and kittens that lived on Grandma’s back porch. I ended up picking all but one of those tulips, perhaps because the kittens were frolicking in there and knocking them over. When they got back my aunt had noticed immediately. She was not happy at all and asked me why I had picked her tulips. My four year old little self told her the cats made me do it. I don’t think I got in trouble but I figured out I had done something wrong. Thankfully, as the years went by it was a funny story for the four of us to remember.”

Sandra Edwin who said: “No way would I play that game! When my kids were in school, we lived near Statesville. For a fund raiser schools paint the football field in grids about 5 foot square. Number the squares and sell them. Then they would let a cow loose and wherever the cow left a deposit would determine who was the winner. Don’t think I ever went to one. I didn’t even want to see it.”

Shirl who said: “The little county school I attended through the eighth grade held Christmas plays every year. Parents would come to watch us act like we were on a Hollywood stage as we paraded around in our costumes and props, saved year after year for this special occasion. We didn’t get new clothes or shoes for Christmas, but the poke full of candy and fruit the teachers gave us was worth more than the fanciest dresses and shoes money could buy.”

The winner of the used book The Christmas Barn written by C.L. Davis is Joy who said: “I never had a cedar chest, but my parents bought my older sister one for graduation, a beautiful Lane. She had it meagerly filled when she married at 18, her and her hubby carried it to the place they rented to live next door. I was 10, and devastated to lose her all the way next door. I married a man that already had an apartment, so I hadn’t needed to set up housekeeping in a chest, thankfully, since I never had one. We’ve been married 34 years, and I bought my parents home, my sister, now widowed, still lives next door, they’d bought it years ago. I did buy a used Lane chest that I keep blankets and quilts in, though.”

Winners send your mailing address to me at blindpigandtheacorn@gmail.com and I will get your book or cd on the way.

A big thank you to every one who participated in this year’s Thankful November. I enjoyed every comment!!

Tipper, I made a batch of biscuits using your flour and whole cream recipe for the first time. I didn’t have any self-rising flour so I added baking powder (1-1/2 tsp per cup) and salt (1/4 tsp per cup) to some APF. I needed a bit more cream than the 1:2 ratio of cream to flour, but the biscuits came out great. I learned that the dough needs to be rolled out thinner than I’m used to. My habit has been to have the dough about 1/2″ to 5/8″ thick. With this dough I should have made it thinner.

I’d post pics if I could.

Thanks for the recipe. I checked your and Jim’s book to be sure I remembered it correctly.

    Praying for Granny from Texas!

  9. I heard that story growing up of the animals kneeling at midnight but never went to see. First have to remember about it being “old Christmas” and then have enough gumption to wake up then get out of a warm bed around midnight. It would certainly be worth it though to see what Sheila Kay describes. Does us good to encounter great mysteries that remind us we don’t know nearly as much as we want to think we do. We do know that Balaam’s ass saw the angel that Balaam could not see. (And AI does not know who Balaam is either.)

  10. Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you Tipper for keeping your blog going. Stopping by here every day brings joy to my mornings!

  11. Congratulations y’all! I’m going to keep trying! Happy weekend. ❤️. Everytime I post it tells me I’m posting too fast to wait. But I only post once a day here!

  12. Congratulations to all of the winners.

Debra in Florida, I missed your comment about wanting to see a picture of the toy tractor with the spoon seat. Understand it is not a pedal tractor, but just a small push around toy. I gave my son an International pedal tractor and made him a trailer, and my first grandson a replica of a M Farmall pedal tractor and found a JD pedal tractor that was being thrown away at the trash landfill and fixed up what was broke on it and gave it to my other grandson. He tried to ride the tires off it. Each of them still have their tractors. When looking on eBay and seeing the asking price for toy tractors such as this, these tractors are a “gold mine.” My favorite toy of all when I was a child was a toy pedal tractor. My neighbor would always tease me about making a noise with my mouth trying to make it sound like the engine was running. She was not my true aunt but for all of my life I have called her Aunt Mattie and her husband Uncle Jake, now they have passed on but I still refer to them by those names, they lived about a quarter of a mile away as the crow flies, so I must have been pretty loud.

Contact me at stopman409@aol.com and I will try to send you a picture. It will be after Christmas and my son can do it, I am not smart enough to know how to do it. I can also send you a picture of a lamp he made using an auto scissor jack. I don’t think it would be a good idea to start posting pictures along with our comments.

  13. Congratulations to all the winners! Thank you Tipper, for your generosity in sharing your time, talents and giveaways with us, because in celebrating Appalachia with you, we are all winners.

  14. Congrats to all the winners! So sweet of you to do these giveaways every year, Tipper! It’s a true joy to read the blogs and the wonderful comments! We have very cold weather this weekend. Praying everyone has a blessed day and stays warm!

  15. Congratulations to all the winners! Tipper, thank you for having the best blog! We are like family here. I’m always sharing things I read here with others and they always ask, “who are these people you’re talking about” and I say it’s the blind pig family. Thank you and God bless!

    1. Debbie- I am just gonna say “Amen” to your comment today. I feel exactly the same way! Have a super day everyone! We are expecting a big snowstorm this afternoon. I am gonna get busy and make a pot of soup. There are lots of trees in our county in WV, and if we get the snow they are calling for, one of them will likely fall on an electric line. I want to be prepared.

  16. Hi Tipper. I see that I won one of the books. I will be sending an email. I do enjoy your reading of the books. Most of our snow melted yesterday. We have Winter warning for tonight thru Monday. Wind chills at -15 with light snow Sunday morning . I’m getting ready to fix breakfast. I start my day with a cup of hot water. A friend of mine started her day that way. She said folks during the depression couldn’t find coffee or even chicory so they drank hot water. She, her parents and her siblings all lived healthy lives to over 100 yrs old. I’m not saying it was the got water but I’ve come to enjoy it as covid has taken my sense of taste and smell for these past 5 years now. We must remember to Praise GOD in all things a it is all a part of HIS plan. I keep you all in my prayers. May we be ever hopeful and faithful. I love Y’all.

    1. I enjoy your comments so much! They are always edifying and uplifting. It’s an interesting thought to start the day with a cup of hot water. I have to believe it’s a healthy practice as it hydrates you first thing and warms your insides which is shaped to be very beneficial. Our high today is -1 (actual temp). Stay warm. May God richly bless you!
