tomatoes ready for planting

Tomato Plants in Greenhouse

I’m chomping at the bit to get the garden planted. The plants in the greenhouse need to be put outside in the ground so they can stretch their roots and grow towards the sun.

The tomato plants are huge and our pepper plants have a few baby peppers on them! If the plants do well after transplanting this will for sure be the earliest we’ve ever had peppers producing.

I still have some flowers and herbs inside the greenhouse that need planting too.

The weather has turned chilly again. It was a cold 37 degrees when I got up this morning and a cold stiff wind has blown all day. The forecast shows 35 for the low on Thursday, but surely that will be the last of the cold weather. I’ll just have to wait and see if it is or not.

I would love to get some things planted this week, but it may be next week before we get much accomplished. Hopefully the tomatoes and peppers can survive another week or so. At least they are toasty warm inside the greenhouse and the low temps can’t hurt them there.

Here’s the best planting signs for May 2023.

Taurus: good for all root crops and above ground crops 17, 18
Cancer: best for planting above ground and root crops 21, 22, 23
Scorpio: best for flowers and above ground crops 4, 5, 31
Pisces: good for planting and transplanting above ground crops, trees and shrubbery 13, 14

I’ve heard the first three days of May are flowering days which means anything planted during that time will have lots of blooms but will not produce many vegetables. I hope to plant some flowers during that time to see if they have extra blooms.

  1. Praying for all yall.
I planted my taters last week in February, scratched up some today. I don’t have the beauty of the mountains but here in flat NC we can plant early.

  2. The rule of thumb for planting flowers in the ground has always been” not before Mothers Day” around here. Trying to keep my peonies covered on these cold night but have to find where the cover blew off to the nest morning!

  3. A little chomping at the bit is OK, I guess, but if you start cribbing or sucking wind I’m gonna start to worry about you.

  4. I don’t have a greenhouse so I have mine planted in pots. I load them in my wagon and bring them inside at night and back out to the sunshine in the AM. I have blooms on tomatoes and strawberries and we ate two strawberries with a few more turning red. The lettuce isn’t doing very well but hopefully will perk up soon.

Keep us posted on Miss Cindy. Many of us are praying for her daily. There are some things in life we get over and others we get through with God’s help. We’ve all had family with cancer and understand what your family is going through. I personally have sat with four family members as they dealt with various forms of it as well as with a couple of friends. It’s an ugly thing.

  5. One time my Dad planted some corn. He told his sister he had planted. She told him that he had planted at the wrong time (sign). His corn grew 12 feet tall!

  6. I need to take some lessons. My bell peppers (capsicum) seed from fresh food store brought, are not doing well. My small “Quirk” cucumbers, I got three, perished on the vine. In prayer for Miss Cindy.

  7. I’ve already planted petunias, marigolds, pepper plants and tomato plants I bought from our local high school greenhouse. I only plant a few because of limited space but looking forward to watching them grow.

Praying for Miss Cindy and your family. Oh, one more thing..what’s the drink you drank every morning instead of coffee? Is it a “gut” cleanser? Thank you and have a blessed day.

  8. It’s easy to plant too early here in the Appalachians. The little winters ambush us. Aunt Gene taught us to be patient and wait. We’re having Blackberry Winter right now. Britches Winter comes in May or sometimes June. So we wait to plant those maters.

  9. praying for Ms Cindy, God bless you friend, friends of Appalachia,in Jesus name, God bless your family

  10. Big news here. I got the cookbook yesterday and Amazon gave me a whopping 1 penny rebate! I sat around just looking and reading recipes and let me say I’m simply surprised at all the wonderful recipes, pictures of times gone by and of course you and Jim looking good! Tipper, you’re a pretty lady, but in black and white photos, you’re absolutely gorgeous!!! I plan to get cooking soon! My plants get dragged out to a table of the day and dragged back in my room off the house every night. It’s getting a little tiring, but it is what is. I have a feeling next week things are going to bust out and we can plant. Btw, your tomato plants look hardy and healthy.

  11. Two years ago I was amazed at all the blossoms on my squash BUT no fruit formed at all. I wonder what date I planted them – or maybe it was weather for only male blossoms. Also just learned that fruit can actually grow and then fall off if they weren’t pollinated sufficiently. So much to learn! This year there are plenty of zinnias, nasturtiums, and marigolds growing throughout my garden! PLUS, deer don’t eat these flowers – win/win. Beginning to look real pretty out there! God thought of everything!

  12. My tomatoes, peppers and a few flowers are sheltered on my front porch away from these winds we are having. In the 40s here the last 3 mornings. Should be the BEST blackberry crop in years!!!! Hope to get plants in the ground next week.
The sunshine is so beautiful and warming, though, during these cooler temps.

  13. I’ve never been one to plant by the signs. Not for any reason other than I’ve never understood it, nor had time to figure it out. I’ve always planted when the seed packet noted planting time and when I had time. I always had a good harvest no matter when I planted. Last year I tried to be more by the book, so to speak, and fussed over ever little thing with my garden and it didn’t do as well as it had in all my past years. This year I wasn’t going to plant at all, but I can’t seem to not plant a garden. I am planting basically everything in tubs. I did some tubs last year, but still had a big ground garden. This year just tubs. My husband bought a lot of tomato plants and I grew some from seeds so we will see how this multi tub garden will do this year. It should be interesting. Happy gardening everyone, no matter how, where or when you grow, enjoy it! May all our gardens have a bountiful harvest!

  14. I’m always ready to get my hands dirty, but this has been a cold and damp spring. A few teaser days of warmth. The garden was turned over 2 weeks ago, but has been too wet to till. Strange not having peas, potatoes, and onions out yet. Not much else can be planted here until after Mother’s Day and sometimes it is cold even then, especially the last few years. So for now we wait on the Lord to give us better weather.

  15. Goodness, you seem to be having a late spring. We here in the south have a lot of tomatoes planted already and some have little bitty tomatoes. We have had a lot of very strong wind for the last 3 days and it is playing havoc with them. Today’s forecast is call for more of the same. The wind is the remnants of a semi-storm that came through ahead of it. We have about 61 days before the launch of hurricane weather and for sure am praying that they do not hit Florida this time. Give my thoughts and prayers to Miss Cindy. I am so sorry for her and your road ahead. Also, you have myself and my Hubby on the popsicle kick and we do like the pineapple best. God Bless.
