Today’s post was written by Paul.
When I uploaded “I’ll Wear the Banner” for Easter,” I looked over the song list, and I noticed that Pap and his brother Ray sang several songs from Jim and Jesse’s 1966 album, “Sing Unto Him a New Song.”
They sang the title track, “I’ll Wear the Banner,” “Angel Mother,” and “In God’s Eyes.”
I wound up listening to all of Jim and Jesse’s album online and enjoyed it very much. I found that it was one of their most solid albums. I can remember seeing the album (with its striking cover) at my Uncle Ray’s house back in the ’80’s.
When I listened to the song “How Much are You Worth,” I remembered that Pap and Granny sang the song together when I was a kid. I asked Granny if she would be willing to take a momentary break from her crochet long enough to sing with me on the chorus. She agreed, and I didn’t even have to bribe her with a trip to Walmart! 🙂
I believe that somewhere among all my tapes and CD’s, I have a recording of her and Pap singing the song back in the day. If I can find it, I’ll upload it too. Of course, back then, Granny could sing out much louder on her harmony part. I think she and Pap probably sang the song in G Major, two frets higher than where we did it here. Although it’s very melancholy, I think this is a great song that paints a true portrait of how life (and death) can be if we set the wrong priorities.
According to Spotify, this song was written by J. Nix. When I searched, I turned up a lot of musician folks with a first name that starts with a J and the last name Nix, but all of them are clearly too young to have been this J Nix.
I hope you enjoyed this video. April 21st, will be Ira Louvin’s birthday, and I’ll be sharing a song that he wrote as a tribute to him so be on the lookout for that next Sunday.

Paul, Granny sure made you sound good!! So good to see Granny!!
You both did an excellent job with that song.
Granny has such a lovely voice! Cardinal Francis George of Seattle gave one of the best quotes I’ve ever heard on this lament: “The only thing we take with us when we die is what we have given away”.
I don’t know how I missed this post in my email box, but I’m sure glad I found it today! What a blessing to hear Granny sing with Paul. I heard Paul sing many times, but this is the first time I’ve heard Granny sing. Granny sings beautifully! I always thought your family got their singing talents from Pap, but now I can tell it is equally from both Pap and Granny. Thank you for recording Granny singing so we can enjoy her talents too. Please tell her to sing more often!
Awww, that was a bright spot in my day. They harmonize so well. Thank you for posting this!!
Thanks to you all for sharing this beautiful, well sung song!
Beautiful song beautifully done!
Just beautiful!!
I believe this is the most beautiful singing I’ve heard on here. 🙂 I want to hear more of Granny. The harmony of her and Paul singing is wonderful. I hope all of you know how blessed you are to have such a wonderful treasure still on this earth. I would love to see and hear more of Granny on the blog and in your videos!
This was just wonderful. Paul, you did a great job as usual of singing and making that Dove sound really good. And Granny, Wow. What a great job on the harmony. Y’all should find some more old songs that Pap did and get Granny to sing them with you. I really enjoyed this.

What a sweet treat to hear this on the Lord’s Day! Thank you for sharing this song!!
We all say that Granny is a treasure. Now find out she is a hidden treasure. Nobody knew she could sing. Except me, I noticed her a long time ago. But I’m a nobody anyway, so I’ll right blend in with the crowd.
How much am I worth? Well nothing right now. But I’m an heir to the King who owns everything!

I was moved to tears hearing Granny sing….how blessed you are to still have her in your life
A splendid song, indeed, but even more—such a precious moment with Paul and Granny! So little did we know of her musical talent, effortlessly joining Paul in perfect harmony!
I have played this over several times not only to listen to the words and but to listen to Granny. The words are very true, I know someone that I was once close too, that has chased the dollar bill all of his adult life and is still chasing it leaving his family behind, now they have very little to do with him and he is often by himself. You have never seen or will ever see a funeral procession with a Uhaul truck or armored car behind the hearse.
Thank you for sharing the recording, it really blessed and touched my soul. The harmony of Paul and Granny is so beautiful.
Beautifully done. We normally hear your mother speak in a quiet, subdued voice; but hearing her sing was such a treat. I hope the two of you do it more often and share it with us.
Thank you!
I really enjoyed it ,God bless them in Jesus name
PLEASE do more songs with Granny. This touched my heart to see and hear her.
Loved hearing Granny sing with you, Paul. it was beautiful harmony! You need to sing with her more often. Have a blessed day!!
Beautiful! I really enjoyed this. Now I see that the family musical talent is from Granny as well as Pap! Great harmonizing.
Oh I just love this one! This is the first time I’ve heard granny sing. There’s just something so special about hearing our elders lift up their voices in song. Granny’s sounds so good! Y’all will have to take her to Walmart and buy her some new yarn for that one!
That was absolutely beautiful!!! Thank you Paul and Granny!
Beautiful song full of truth. Thank you for sharing. Please thank Granny for singing, too. That is a beautiful sweater she is wearing.
So sweet!
Well, I reckon I learn something new about your clan every day. I had no idea that Granny had a sweet, lovely voice. Also, unless my eyes deceive me, every time she joined in on the chorus, she perked up a bit and it was almost as if, momentarily, she was younger and taking a bright step back in time.
Oh what a blessing. That family harmony is beautiful. Granny is amazing. Love and appreciate your family. Take care and God bless ❣️
This was so special. Paul, you and Granny sounded wonderful. Granny’s harmonizing was spot on. What a real blessing! Would love to hear Granny sing with you some more. Your whole family is so talented. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed Sunday everyone!!
Thank you so much for sharing your music! I agree with everyone else; what beautiful voices and wonderful harmony. When I listen to your family sing, it brings back so many memories of my own family singing together. My father used to drive around with his car trunk full of old hymnals; just in case, someone wanted to sing. It’s a shame so many people don’t realize the value of sharing music and songs!
That was beautiful!!
You and Granny did a great job singing that old song. It is sweet listening to you two sing together. Please get Tipper to sing a song with you also.
What a sweet harmony you two have. Granny has hidden talents.
Each one of our lives are worth Jesus. From Eve onward for even her and then Adam to have redemption he had to come, even if only for one because there is no other way. What a marvel that God prizes that fellowship so highly.
I just love them both–so wonderful. Many thanks for this video.
That was beautiful, Paul, and Granny’s harmony was spot on.
Great song and your partner was wonderful! I love whenever granny is in a video. She’s so talented in so many ways, but you are all just so gifted. Keep’em coming please.
Well no wonder you’uns are so talented – you get it from both sides! Really enjoyed hearing Granny.
I enjoyed this so much!!!! Thank you. God bless you and yours on this Sabbath❤❤
So worth getting up early on Sunday to be blessed by such a beautiful voice. Granny is the best. oh and Paul did a great job also. Happy Lord’s Day ♡
Having Granny sing we you today was extra special. I enjoyed it. Paul, I think taking Granny to Walmart is more of a threat than a bribe! My wife worked 22 years in the deli at my closest Walmart (15 miles).
Beautiful. My love and I sing together once in a while
Wow, what a song. I am thinkin, it would be worth a trip for me to make to take Granny to Walmart to hear her sing. She does do a wonderful job of harmonizing. And aren’t you guys Blessed to have all of these videos to be able to pass them down to your Grands, great-Grands and beyond. Absolutely priceless videos, that is for sure. God Bless.
