Ooshie it’s cold in Brasstown! I think the cold seems worse because of the warm weather we’ve had over the last two weeks.
It snowed on and off yesterday evening but it didn’t hardly amount to a skiff of snow. One minute it was a cold rain, then hard ice pellets, and then snow flurries.
The cold air filtered in all day long causing the temperatures to dip way down in the 20s overnight. The same is forecasted for tonight.
I’m not worried about the things we planted at the end of last week, they’ve not had time to come up yet. The onion slips we planted are up, but hopefully they’ll be okay even if they freeze on the top.
The hosta are up and growing everywhere. I know they will all freeze solid and turn to mush, but they will restart their annual growth cycle and come up again in the next couple of weeks.
Granny’s plum tree is in full bloom. It typically gets bit by a late hard frost so this isn’t anything new for it. I hope folks who depend on their fruit trees, bushes, and vines don’t lose their crop because of the hard freeze.
Our blueberries have leaves but no blooms so I’m sure they’ll be fine. The wild blackberries and the tame ones don’t have any blooms yet either and our grapevines aren’t budded out yet.
The pepper seedlings are still snug under the grow lights.
We have a small heater in the greenhouse, but instead of using it to help warm the plants Matt said we’d just carry the few trays of cabbage into the house till the cold retreats. So that’s what we did.
I hope the hard freeze doesn’t take out any plants at your house.

Here in New Mexico we had 2 nights around 30 and one cold day in between, but it warmed up today and 90s are in store for the rest of this week.
Afternoon everyone. It was 24 degrees last night. Low 40’s today. They are saying snow flurries are possible tonight. Our last snow didn’t melt for almost 2 weeks. That’s too long for me, but a little snow before the heat wave would be nice. I usually don’t plant anything til early May. Arkansas has a really long growing season. I’m still picking tomatoes in mid November. No Hostas yet, but Arkansas is a crazy place. Maybe they will survive.
It was 90° F here in central Texas on Sunday. Temps dropped sharply beginning about 4:00 PM Sunday, falling into the upper 30s. Monday, was not nearly as warm but comfortable despite high winds and very low humidity, creating conditions for fires to break out and become uncontrollable. Fortunately, I’ve heard no reports of such.
Last night (Monday) we had a freeze warning with temps dropping to 31° F this morning. At midday, we are in the mid 50s with the high predicted to be about 65°. It shouldn’t be as cold tonight. That will probably put an end to Winter in our part of the world. Bluebonnets are being seen!
If, as is usually the case, you folks back East get our weather the next day, you know what to expect.
Hi Tipper,
The snow is finally melting here in my neck of the N.H. woods! It’s pretty, has some usefulness, but it has out stayed its welcome and I’m glad to see it going away. I’m ready for yard clean up, and garden planting.
If your plants start to come up and you’re worried the frost will get to them; I cut the bottoms off old 1 gallon milk jugs and put the top part over the plants, it acts as a barrier from frost and the air that’s trapped in the area around the plant stays warm. Just be sure to press the jug tops into the soil a little bit, or they will blow away.. I learned that the hard way one year, and my neighbors weren’t to happy with me either.. milk jug tops blew every where.
Have a blessed day!!
Very cold in Haywood County too with a skiff of snow. Thankfully the sun is shining right now. My family in SE Ohio was expecting about an inch of snow and ended up with 6″ and no power.
Everyone stay warm out there. Sorry for those that had the damaging weather. Mother Nature seems to be having a hard time giving birth to Spring this year. It is a bit early yet. Itās going to be here sooner than later. Then here comes all that Summer, blasting heatwaves. Yucky. Stay safe and hunker down for a little while longer. It will get here. God bless everyone today, tomorrow and always. J
we had big fluffy snow yesterday then lil snowflakes all day and the wind would cut you into, so cold. I had to bring 3 plats in from the greenhouse until this mess is over .lol
sunny on and off today with cold winds.it was down in the 20s last nite. shew !! warmer days ahead tho. yay.
I didn’t cover anything up because with temps so low I don’t think it would have helped.
the cold gets my lilac every year. I’m in south central Ky about 35 miles from Tn.
stay warm maybe we all can play in the dirt in a few days.
The days have been beautiful here in the midlands, (Lexington SC location term) and gardening has been fun, but a little winter returned yesterday. Gil and I quickly pushed pots under cover and moved things in the shed. Hopefully all will be ok as I didnāt go crazy with what I was doing as I knew the little winters usually hang around till Easter. Hopefully, these next few days will be the last of winter. My backyard garden project has officially started after watching your channel Itās reminded me that a work in progress is better than not starting or trying to complete it in one day. Joy. Thatās what Iām mostly finding. Thanks Tipper. Prayers continue to be lifted for you and your sweet family.
It got down to the low 30ās last night, but only getting up in the mid 40ās today on our area of NC. We got lots of rain and wind yesterday, but no snow or ice. I havenāt planted anything. Havenāt even had time to work up my garden beds. Thankful now I havenāt done anything yet with the garden. Iām probably only going to plant some basic vegetables and just enough to eat on this summer. Just have to many house things that need to do this year and canāt keep up a big garden while doing the other things that need done too. Iām just not young anymore and canāt juggle as much as I use to do. Now days itās one thing at a time until it gets finished or nothing gets finished and I end up with a lot of unfinished projects. I think my multi tasking days are over with since Iām beyond 65 now.
It is sorta late to be leaving a comment. I am also over 65 and have bad arthritis along with mental problems after my wifeās death. I tried to do several things Saturday and went to bed Saturday night hurting and slap worn out and feeling nauseous from the pain. My son helps me but likes to tease me and say āit takes you all week to do the things you use to do in one day.ā He knows how I hurt and is just teasing me. It seems nowadays a lot of things donāt get done.
I thought about yāall when I looked at the weather radar and saw snow heading your way
Itās 20 degrees here right now with a feel like temperature of 3. We got 6 inches of snow so far and maybe a little more this afternoonā¦not nearly as much as Allie in Wisconsin. I am so thankful for my sweet hubby this morning (and every day). He volunteered to drive me and my mama to her dentist appointment because the roads are not plowed. Even though I drove on snow covered roads to work for years, I would have asked her to cancel if I had to drive today. Then heās taking us to the store so Mama can pick up a few groceries too. He is a very patient man. I hope everyone has a happy St Patrickās day. Itās gonna warm up Thursday. Yay!
My wife had surgery yesterday in Hendersonville. The parking deck had several puddles last night that are frozen solid now. I didn’t see any snow but plenty of rain.
Jackie, I hope she is doing well and recovers quickly!
Havenāt heard the word āooshieā in a long time!! It is cold!! Gotta cross Neels Gap on the was to Gainesville doc appt. Glad snow was a no-show!!!
This insane weather is killing me! This area lost electricity from about 11 pm Sunday until 7 pm yesterday. It was warm before the storm, so I never dreamed I would need firewood carried in. When the inside thermostat read 61 degrees, I quickly loaded up the stove, kicked back, and watched the snow fly. It wasn’t until an hour or so after I woke that I saw the damage the storm had caused. The 100-year-old barn was struck hard, causing the feeding stalls to collapse, and the front is severely bowed about halfway up, where the wooden slabs meet. The county emergency management team is asking for photos of local damage to determine whether it was a tornado or just straight-line winds. I lost two trees in the yard, and no telling how many in areas I have not seen. I lost a lot, but it could have been so much worse, and I am thankful no injuries have been reported. Tipper, I have climbed in a truck bed to cover my plum trees many times during cold weather, and they still manage to freeze.
Shirl, Iām so sorry about the damage.
It’s warmed up to 37 here in Johnston County, NC. The sun is shining so the temperature will hopefully get to the upper 50’s by this afternoon. We had a lot a wind and at times downpours yesterday but in our area no major damage. School was canceled here and in several areas, so that kept the buses off the roads during the bad times of the day. Like I have mentioned before, March has always been an unpredictable month. Well, I’m off to the dentist to get a small cavity filled. Have a blessed day everyone!
It’s amazing how fast we get spoiled when the weather turns warm!
Good morning, Tipper and Acorns. It is up to 19F at 9am here in the mountains of NE TN. I collected a full dishpan of March snow. That will be plenty for us and some to share too. One year it was just a skiff, and I collected a pint jar, and it melted to a half pint. It comes in handy for kitchen burns, wind burn and sunburn. We got our 4″ of snow. It would have been deeper if the wind had not blown so hard. There is a layer of tiny ice balls from the rain and sleet that came just before the snow. I liked reading about Randy’s grandmother’s peony. I drove past my late parents’ house last week and Mama’s peony was up about 3″. The folks that bought their home keep it up nice. My son, Charles (sometimes I call him Ed), had a rough night again but Praise the lord he got some sleep and is ready to get up and try another day. TY all so much for your prayers. Miracles happen every day if we just have hope and faith. I keep everyone here and up Wilson Holler in my prayers. I love y’all.
This cold snap is definitely proof that Mother Nature’s in charge, and she’s not done with winter just yet! We were at 78-degrees on Sunday afternoon and I was outside in shorts and a t-shirt and quite comfy doing some chores ahead of the storms and ‘batten the hatches’ only to awaken yesterday to rapidly-dropping temperatures after the wind and rain subsided that quickly changed to ice pellets, then a heavy and wet snow that brought a very light dusting here along the Eastern side of the Cumberland Plateau, changing back to ice pellets before subsiding. The storm threat overnight alone was enough to call-off schools for most of our area; which worked in favor given the snowfall. While the Sequatchie Valley proper didn’t see anything of great concern, the surrounding mountains (specifically Monteagle Mountain) was covered-up pretty good! It wouldn’t be conducive to buses for sure! So the kids got the day off yesterday and again today since the mountains still have some accumulation that’ll easily melt-off later today. My plants and flowers probably aren’t too happy, but I don’t have much out yet that isn’t cold-hardy. Tulips, hosta, rose bushes, etc. — they all know how to handle the cold and Mother Nature generally knows better than us anyways. Stay warm and let the countdown to some real spring weather restart/continue. š
Itās 19 degrees here in SW Ohio and our ground is covered in white. Maybe an inch. It doesnāt look to be on the roads but Iām sure there are slick spots. I think Iāll stay snuggled up inside today. Blessings to you all.
I love reading about the weather everyone is experiencing in their areas! It was -2 this morning with a -10 feels like temp when I woke today. I plan on making a hot cup of coffee and golden milk and sitting by the fire. I like my coffee to be so hot that it almost burns my tongue! I was thinking yesterday would be a good day to plan our garden and looks at our big bucket of seeds. We are still two months out from planting but it is time to start planning!
It got cold here too. Single digits, high winds and snow. Of course a couple of our ewes decided to lamb. Everyone is locked up in the barn so I canāt wait until it warms up tomorrow to set them free
Pray our blueberry didnāt get harmed, they have blooms and the bees are pollinating
There’s a bit of snow on the ground and it feels like 7°, but the wind has finally calmed after a week of it rattling the whole house. The other day I had to practically lay on the front door to close it! The sky is blue this morning and that is wonderful! I think it’s a good day to bake some Irish Soda Bread.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!
March, it seems like, has to have the year’s weather in one month. I have onions, carrot seed, radish and lettuce covered in the garden. Did not cover English peas. We did not get snow, barely missed us. It is in the 20’s this morning but clear as a bell and sunny. We gardeners plant in hope and take our lumps. Replanting always needs to be held in reserve.
It’s 36 deg. here in Texas & that’s mighty cold for us here. This won’t last & by Thursday we will be back in the 80’s. Weather is constantly changing around here this time of the year. I’m still try to adjust to Daylight Savings Time. š Have a great day!!
Brrrrrrr!!! 12° with feels like 0° temp. I see where it’s supposed to reach 61° tomorrow here in west central IL. This weather has been nuts! I only planted about a third of my onion sets and I’m hopeful āŗļø My iris’ are about 6″ tall and while they’re hardy(before bloom) the past couple of nights might have them starting over. Was so good to “visit” with you & Matt last night. The sounds of little feet & squeals above your head always brings a smile to my face & often a giggle. Your home sure is full of life & loveā”
Feels like 20 in Canton GA this morning!!!! We warm back up tomorrow.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! Remember to wear your green!!!
For sure we see all the little winters pop up here in Blount County. My pear tree and plum tree are full of blooms. I sure hope it doesnāt kill them. We have Lemon Blueberries in the front yard. They are soooo good to eat, I hope this doesnāt get them. We started planting a really small garden to just eat from last year, because it is now just the two of us. Not much planted yet. Have a blessed day.
I saw a few snowflakes, sure is cold, God bless you
Hi Tipper,
We have also have had cold temperatures, rain turning to sleet then to snow here in the Blue Ridge.
Our snow is a bit deeper than yours in Brasstown. It is covering the grass and looks really
nice. We were hoping to be able to start cleaning up the yard this week but looks like we are “snowed” in
for the next few days.
For me it is always the same— Spring and warm weather always comes slowly and winter will not loose it freezing grasp on us until May. I always get in a hurry and start planting things before winter has left.
Our last freeze according to the USDA is April 15th. Several years ago on April 16th we had a hard freeze.
In that regards, even USDA scientists have difficulty predicting spring. I will just stick to my woolly worms— They said last fall that the last part of winter/ early spring would be cold (their back end was black). Maybe they are in on a secret we don’t know!! Stay warm. Kathy Patterson
It’s 17 degrees here this morning, yikes! We have daffodils blooming here and a few peonies are up, I noticed a lilac bush was leafing out, but my guess is the leaves will be replaced in a few weeks with new ones. We had quite of bit of snow, but the ground is warm enough that a lot of it melted. Spring is definitely on it’s way!!!
Yesterday before Diane headed off to visit her sister off of Hanging Dog I told her she would probably see some snow by the time she heads back. She immediately checked her Ai friend on her smart phone and she said no it wasn’t going to snow. I said I checked the update on Facebook from the weather service and they said yes. When she returned at 5:00 PM there was a very light dusting of snow on the ground and my car. Diane came in smiling and laughing and saying I was right. She said that when she saw it start to snow at her sisters she immediately went outside and stood in the falling snow laughing. Diane grew up in Florida so she loves it when it snows; I grew up in NH and we measure snow in feet rather than inches so I’ve seen more than I want. But for Diane and Tipper I wish it had been a little more. Still sitting inside the cottage looking at my raised beds that I haven’t touched yet. I guess it’s off to Lowe’s today. Have a blessed.
Ron, does Ai mean artificial ignorance? I wonder if babies will soon be born with smart phones in their heads instead of a brain!
Good one. Sad but almost true. I can remember growing up as a kid in the 50s and spending all day outside playing. No cell phones, no computers, and very little tv. Ai is a new addictive device for our youth and anyone with too much free time to use. I love to read. Have a blessed day.
Mornin Tipperā¦
Brrrr, itās bloody cold here in Amelia!
Good mornin for a cup of Golden Milk.
Been awake since 4 oāclock. My sleep pattern is changing as I age. Looking forward to return of warmer weather in a few days. Mother Nature sure enjoys messing with us, doesnāt she? Yāall stay toasty warm and enjoy your day.
I have nothing out right now that I need to cover up except for my grandmotherās peony. In the last two weeks it sprouted back out and has grown to around 10 inches tall. I think it would give kudzu a run for its money. I usually will cover it up several times during the early spring each year. It has a heap of sentimental value to me.
