Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers who read the Blind Pig and The Acorn. Your families and the world are better off for having you!

Over the years the Blind Pig gang has done so many songs about mothers that we created a playlist. You can listen to it here.

In Appalachia Mother’s Day is bouquets of flowers for the kitchen table and hanging baskets and potted plants for the porch and yard. It’s mothers crying tender tears as they ponder on the love being showered on them by those they love most.

Mother’s Day in Appalachia is mothers offering to pitch in and help with the festivities while being shooed back to the couch or the porch to rest on their special day.

The day is full of remembering mothers who’ve gone on while holding tightly to those who may soon take leave of this ole world. Mother’s Day in Appalachia is full of handmade cards and fistfuls of flowers picked from the yard gifted by the young who don’t yet fully understand how blessed they are to have their mother.

  1. Tipper–
PS. Is THAT the “tall, skinny version” of the big, heavy green glass dish you found (that Pap kept his tobacco(?) in?…that heavy one you found a month ago, and told us there was “another tall one, that you could use for flowers”? . . .Is that “IT”, in the pic of you & Paul with your Mom?❤️

*[You needn’t answer — I wanted. to say
I saw it in the pic (when you show a picture, I “study it”), and thought I’d point-out that I’d wondered!❤️]

  2. Happy Mother’s Day Tipper, my Mom is still with us, she is 87. She still has a good sharp mind, but moving mighty slow! I don’t know what it will be like to lose her. It’s a day I regret, cause she is so much more than a Mother’s. She is my best friend. I’ve told my Mom about your Mom. She doesn’t do computers or YouTube. But she loves hearing all about you & Matt & your family. I hope you had the bestie Mother’s day yet!

  10. Happy Mother’s Day!

To the mamas with strong hearts and steady faith, who still self-doubt and stumble.

To the mamas who are stubbornly selfless.

To the mamas of miscarried babies who already had names.

To the mamas who avoid the mirror.

To the mamas praying for wayward children.

To the mamas with sadness in their smiles.

To the mamas who outlived their mamas.

To the mamas making the best choices they can.

To the mamas fiercely fighting for the people they love.

To the mamas with worn knees and tattered Bibles.

To the mamas trusting Jesus one day at a time.

In case no one has wished you a happy Mother’s Day yet, would you hear it from me?

Because maybe you just need someone to see you and say that life can be really hard sometimes, but you don’t have to handle everything on your own. Healing can take a lifetime, but God never lets you go. Prayers don’t always get answered this side of eternity, but God is always looking after you.

Today, I pray you see evidence of God’s persistent kindness perfect timing. I pray you feel wrapped tight in the most giant hug you could ever imagine.

    1. Thank you for this. My adult child has special needs and doesn’t really grasp the importance of showing appreciation or making special efforts & sadly my husband hasn’t “filled the gap” in many years. My own mom is gone so no card from her anymore. She had a hard time with affection so she chose really well written cards to express herself. Have a blessed week.

  11. Happy Mother’s Day to you and your daughters. You all have been Blessed beyond measure. To everyone that had a good mother , you were also very Blessed.

  12. Morning everyone. Happy Mother’s Day Tipper, Corie and Katie, and all mother’s no matter who your children are (furry ones too). Tipper, last night my son comes home from work with a white rose for me. I had told him about your tradition and he got it backwards. This morning he said the white part of the rose is for his “omi”, the red edges are for me. I don’t mind sharing my rose. Anna from Arkansas.

  17. Happy Mother’s Day. The world is a better place for having you as well Tipper. All the women in our lives who have loved and inspired us deserve the best.

  18. I recall a Mother’s Day song that spelled out six attributes of a mother. The title is M-O-T-H-E-R….M is for the many things she gave me; O is only that she’s growing old…etc. I can’t recite all of it, but you could look it up. To all you acorn moms, have a wonderful day. Carol and I are remembering our moms this morning and how blessed we were to have them.

  19. Happy Mother’s Day Tipper, Corie & Katie! May God shine upon you today as you gather with your families.

  21. Happy Mother’s Day. My mother will be celebrating 7 years in Heaven on May 31st. I still miss her so much and I know you miss Granny so much, too. But what a joyous reunion that is going to be when we see them again. I wish you many wonderful memories today.

  22. Good Sunday morning and Happy Mother’s Day to you, Tipper & your 2 sweet girls♡ My momma in heaven will be smiling down on me as I’m visited by my 3 amazing grandkids and my tiny great granddaughter, today. I’ll be planting my garden and working on my yard. I can’t think of a more perfect way to spend this day. I hope all of you Acorn moms enjoy a peaceful, blessed day as well♡

  23. It’s supposed to go up to 85 degrees today here in Virginia, a beautiful day. I’ll only see one of my three children for Mother’s Day. My oldest, a son, moved to PA in February and my daughter, the youngest, will be working. She brought me flowers and a couple of other things when she visited me Thursday. My middle child, a son, will probably come over after church if he doesn’t have to work. I’m thankful for my children, God has been good. My 96 yo mother lives in Ohio and I saw her last month and spoke to her on the phone Friday. She is a good Christian mother and I thank God for her. Time has passed so quickly. My mother and I had a good laugh over the time when I was seven years old she had to help me down from a huge tree in our front yard. I loved to climb trees. That’s been seventy years ago but almost seems like last week. Happy Mother’s Day Tipper and to all the mother’s here. Have a blessed Sunday.

  24. Happy Mothers Day Tipper, Katie and Corie. can’t wait to see what surprise your family had for you. Tipper I know you are missing sweet Granny this day. My mama has been gone 25 years and I still miss her. Miss all the family gatherings and the best fried potatoes ( seems like mine still don’t taste like mama’s). But oh what a day that will be when we meet again. God bless and keep you and your family. Thank for sharing your life and family. We just love yall.

  25. Happy Mother’s Day, Tipper, Corie and Katie❣️A And a Happy Heavenly Mother’s Day to your sweet “Granny.”

  26. Happy Mother’s Day. When I was younger, just married and didn’t understand why a mother in our neighborhood was bending over backwards to help her son that had turned out bad, he was always in trouble because of getting hooked on drugs and had even beat her one time. His bothers took him out back and talked to him in a way he didn’t forget about beating their mother, the reason for only one time. A man told me a mother will never stop loving her children, she may not approve of what they are doing, but she will always love them.

  27. happy mothets day Tipper! This is a hard one this year I understand. may the Good Lord bless you today and for many more to come, love and prayers from April in New York. Katie knows who I am.

  28. Good morning Tipper and Acorns. May you all have a blessed Mother’s Day. I’m getting ready to wash a load of laundry. I got Tipper and Jim’s Cookbook in the mail from my daughter, Ann. I fell asleep reading it last night. The mail didn’t run till 6pm so it was late and we go to bed at 5 or 6. I had my CPAP on and drifted off to a restful sleep. I hope all of y’all sleep well. Today I’ll crochet a mini neck scarf with some lovely hemp and acrylic yarn that I was gifted. I keep everyone here and up Wilson Holler in my prayers. I love y’all.

  29. Happy Mother’s Day!
I agree with what Randy said yesterday. It includes mommas of foster and adopted children too! Our son is adopted. He is the youngest of our three children. In fact until someone says adoption we never think of it that way. Of course they’re all grown now, but still very much my babies. Many blessings!

    1. Debbie, I heard this said in a joking way, adopted children have special mothers, their mother picked them out, natural mothers have to take whatever they get after 9 months. No, in no way would I make fun of the children or mothers that have children with problems. My youngest grandson has some autism, he appears normal but very shy, the autism affects him socially. He is now twenty years old, working and has overcame a lot of it.

      1. I think I should not have wrote joking way, in my humble opinion there is a whole lot of truth in adopted and foster mothers and mothers of handicapped children being special.
