Happy Mother’s Day from Appalachia – 2025

Being a mother has been the greatest pleasure of my life. From the first time I held the girls I knew that I had found my calling.

Over the last year I’ve discovered being a grandmother is also a first rate pleasure.

I count myself beyond blessed for having my dear sweet mother as well as Miss Cindy, Mamaw, Granny Gazzie, and my aunts.

Long time Blind Pig reader Ron Stephens once left a comment filled with mother’s day wishes. One line was: “To all the Moms, biological or by love’s adoption, God bless you.”

I love the phrase by love’s adoption. It is how I feel about the mothers who influenced my life yet were no relation to me. Women who were my friends’ mothers, bosses and coworkers I had over the years, and the many mothers who attended New Martins Creek Church when I was a girl.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, biological or by love’s devotion, who read the Blind Pig and The Acorn. Your families, friends, and the world are better off for having you!

Over the years the Blind Pig gang has done several songs about mothers. Here’s a few of them:

  5. I’d like to say with the others Happy Mothers’ Day (plural possessive) to every mother and mothering woman. I’m leaving the Blind Pig gang for now, and this laptop, which regularly causes me to have bad thoughts about scammers, at home and abroad. I’ll be using a mobile phone I picked up yesterday to connect with family and friends, but first I need to load my contacts.

  6. Today is “GOTCHA DAY” in our family. In 1978 we adopted our daughter and began using that term the next year. Many years we celebrated gotcha day bigger than birthdays.

  14. The last words my three sisters and I heard our mother say before she passed in the month of May of 2013 were, “I love you all.” She was being transported from the hospital to the hospice house. She lived exactly 24 hours after she told us she loved us and never spoke another word. Mother’s Day is a sad time for us, but Mom was a fine, loving, praying, Christian mother and we will be reunited with her someday. How blessed one is if he/she has a loving Christian mother because not everyone does. Best wishes for a happy Mother’s Day to Granny, Tipper, Katie, and Corie. I enjoy watching your videos on YouTube.

    1. What a wonderful mother. I lost my mother, father and brother in less than seven months in 2009. They left big Godly shoes to fill. I was blessed. Happy Mother’s Day.

  15. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!
Happy Mother’s Day Tipper! You’ve given all of us readers a platform to speak as well. We love you and cherish you greatly.

  16. I doubt us guys ever being able to know how mothers feel about their children. And I doubt mothers being able to explain it to us either. It is one of those things better felt than told, I reckon. My Mom has been gone for quite awhile. I think she was another who knew her calling was to be a mother. She rarely ever thought of herself, always about others. I wish I was more like her. I probably did my life’s work because of her. And she is most likely why I like a lot of flowers on the place. Also today we can remember that “Jerusalem which is from above” is “the mother of us all”. Among other things, that says to me motherhood is a great mystery. Bless all your calls hearts, Mothers.

    1. Ron, I think of the Bible verses that speak of a virtuous woman. For me that is the most perfect description of a mother and wife to her family. My wife and I have lost many of our family members including our parents, my wife lived 9 years after our daughter April was killed in an ATV accident. My wife, April’s mother, never came close to getting over it, she just tried to survive without April, they were as close to one another as a mother and daughter could be.

    1. Thank you Sallie, for that inclusion! I’ve never known birthing a child or adopting a child. I salute all women who have given selflessly.
I have nurtured children and even prevented one from being hit by a car. My caring and loving nature is spread far and wide. So, Sallie, I thank you for reaching out to those of us women who receive no praise or compliment for our generosity of spirit. Maybe we should author a special day just for us.
I send you and all, a warm and loving wish. Happy Mother’s Day ! God bless!

  17. Happy Mother’s Day to all my Mother’s! Yes, I consider you my Mom too Tipper! My husband and I are moving to your neck of the world and You have taught me so much about Appalachia. My husband used to live there and I have visited many times with my own mother (God rest her soul). Thank you on this Mother’s Day for helping us learn about your culture.

  18. praise God my mother had a great testimony, happy mother’s Day, God bless you

  19. Happy Mother’s Day to you Tipper, Corie, Katie, Granny, and all!! I was so blessed with a precious Mother, Grandmothers, Aunts and friends. God blessed me with two sons that are so good to me and a few loves by adoption. God is so good!

  20. Happy Mother’s Day, Tipper! I feel the same way as you, that there is no greater calling than being a mama. Today happens to be my 40th birthday! My mom tells me a sweet story of how I was two weeks early and surprised them so I spent my first couple of nights at home in a dresser drawer. 🙂 My birthday always falls around Mother’s Day weekend (I was born one day before it in 1985) and she tells me how a sweet nurse gave her a pink carnation on Mother’s Day when I was born. My family has already been spoiling me rotten this morning. I feel truly blessed. Enjoy your special day. Your family is so blessed to have you!!

  21. I just read some funny things on http://www.rd.com about mothers and children. I thought of Tipper, Chitter and Chatter when I read this “ a toddler can do more in an unwatched minute than most people can do in a day!”

I am very proud of my niece by marriage to my nephew, she is unable to have children, but she and her husband foster teenage children. To me, women like her who adopt or foster children (especially the older ones) are mighty special. I think of women like her being God’s special mothers. I also feel the same about mother’s taking care of children with special needs.

  22. Such a lovely thought, love’s adoption. I could never have dreamed of all the blessing I’ve received by being a mother. Thank you Lord for giving me a family to love. Thank you Tipper for showing us a spiritual example of a loving mother and grandmother.

  23. Happy Mother’s Day to everyone today. It is our first Mother’s Day without Momma and it is very hard but we are all doing our best to get through it. Love and prayers to all of you and Granny too!

  24. Happy Mother’s Day to you, your Mom, Corie and Katie. May your day be as blessed as you bless us. To know all of you is to love each of you.

  25. Our son has been in our home since the age of 3 weeks. This saying says it all to me for him:

Not flesh of my flesh, not bone of my bone, but still miraculously my own. Never forget for one single minute you grew not under my heart, but in it.

We have 3 beautiful children and 8 grandchildren. Life is full! Even on the hard days I have lived out my calling. I remember in school in the late 70s early 80s college was a huge deal. Each year they asked what we wanted to be. I always remained quiet because I had no college dreams, just daydreaming of having a family. My brother always said “a Waltons kind of life”. He was right. I can’t imagine being anything greater than being a momma. (I am an office manager, but that’s not most important, that just pays the bills 😉

    Happy Mother’s Day!!

  26. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all of the readers of Tippers blog and to Tipper and her girls!!!! God bless!!

  31. Happy Mothers Day! Most days, I start the day with you. Thank you!
I was blessed with a precious mama. I had one child by birth and many more by love.
    God is Great!

  32. Now with all of my messed up feelings and emotions, I will not listen to these songs today. I have just woke up from dreaming about my wife and heard her voice calling me just as clear as if she was here with me. I was blessed to have her, my mother, mother in law, grandmothers and many other motherly women in my life. Most women can have children, it takes a special woman to be a mother. I will just simply say “Happy Mother’s Day” to all.
