More than a few folks said they failed to received yesterday’s post. When I jumped over to my subscription service to check I could see it was never sent out.
There’s a couple of things that can cause a scheduled email not to go out.
There could be an issue with my blog or one with the subscription service itself. But most of the time it’s something more complicated than that.
The way the subscription service works is when a new post publishes here on the blog it sends a ping (think of a doorbell ringing) to the subscription service telling it there is a new post. Once the ping is received the service starts sending out the email to all of you at 6:00 a.m.
I schedule each post to publish at 4:00 a.m. and most of the time the whole pinging thing works like a charm.
But sometimes it doesn’t.
Typically the reason it fails is an issue at an internet hub somewhere along the way (think of a post office or a shipping service like UPS). The issue could be caused by all manner of things, but no matter what the cause is there isn’t anything I can do about it except wait for it to be fixed.
Server issues at my host or with the subscription service’s servers can also cause the pinging process to fail.
A totally different issue can also result in you not receiving your daily dose of Appalachia from me, or I should say result in you not being able to see it.
Email providers are always trying to tighten up their security to prevent spam emails. Often the updates they make will make my daily email suddenly start going into your spam or junk folder. Adding my email blindpigandtheacorn@gmail.com to your contacts list helps prevent that from happening.
Unless something really unusual happens I always publish a post each day. So if you don’t receive the daily email, you can visit my site and read the post by going directly to blindpigandtheacorn.com and scrolling down till you see the correct date and click on the read more link.
I’m sorry something went amiss yesterday. If you’d like to go back and read the post about dog days you can click here.

Didn’t get mine either. I have heard that you will be in my hometown of Canton, GA the end of this month. Can’t wait to meet you and get your book!
Our noting the absence of an e-mail is testament to how much we appreciate the meaningful connections and community you have created among us who celebrate Appalachia. Thank you.
Tipper, I knew you’d be on it like a chicken on a June bug.
I have my email client software (Mozilla Thunderbird) set to filter posts from you to their own folder. When that folder doesn’t have an unread post in it, I know things went wrong somewhere between Brasstown and Temple, Texas.
The first time it happened, I pointed by browser software (Mozilla Firefox) to the URL that Tipper posted. I then added it to my bookmarks THEN I added the bookmark to the bookmarks menu band that I display at the top of Firefox. A single click takes me to the web site.
Last night, daughter and son-in-law came bringing the best pork spareribs I’ve ever eaten: cooked perfectly (smoked), sauced perfectly, and fall-off-the bone tender! During the conversation after the meal, I said that I ate so much it made me poor to carry it. My Texan son-in-law had never heard that expression. Just a bit later he asked if I wanted a gas grill. I told him I had already scratched that itch. He had never heard that one either. Are they common in Cherokee County? . . . or where you are?
Blessings to all . . .
Robert-I’ve heard the itch one but not the other 🙂 Thank you for sharing them!
When I didn’t receive your post yesterday I figured my computer was putting your blog in my spam folder again.
I went to your site and updated my profile and added you to my contacts and your post popped up.
I am usually at a loss where computers are concerned.
I learned something new about dog days. I always thought it was just the month of August. When I was living at home, come August 1st, we were told to stay out any water like ditches, ponds, creeks, lakes, even my favorite, mud puddles. Daddy said it would give you sores especially your feet and legs. Loved last night’s reading of Watermelon Hill. It just gets better each week. Tipper, you always pick the best books! Sorry for the email problems. I put BP&A on my favorites bar and click on it and it takes me right to the blog. Have a blessed day everyone and try to stay cool if you can.
Love your posts Tipper. Now that I have started reading them I can’t stop. Lol. Love to hear what’s happening down your way with my morning coffee.
I missed yesterday,s post to. I figured something had went wrong. Seems like that’s all that’s going on around here. Everything is wrong ,wrong, wrong. we had ordered E bikes and I didn’t like mine cause it was just to big so my husband gonna send them back but the FedEx wouldn’t take them because they weigh to much. we went to 3 different places and still no no no. So the big truck has to come get em. Always something but yes I know things could be alot worse.
Technology is great as long as it works. My years as a principal I always encouraged my teachers to keep a hard copy of grades and records and not totally depend on “the cloud”. Of course I was seen as behind the times and heard “ that will never happen “…until it did…what a mess.
I don’t rely on the email. I have your web page bookmarked and go there every morning for my daily dose.
Now there is a smart man!
I didn’t get the email either. I never do. I don’t want to. I go directly to the website every morning. I preach it in my comments every time this issue rears it’s ugly head. Apparently nobody reads my comments or they just don’t believe me. That’s OK!
Tipper, I didn’t get the Email either, but I, like a bloodhound on a hot trail, let my fingers walk right over to your daily blog. I could get concerned about why this and why that, but honestly, I’m too old to get worked up about much, so I dont. I figure if I really make you mad, you’d let me know I’m being dumped and wouldn’t beat around the bush about it. Lol Just like everything and everybody in this world, there’s no perfect computer system either! There’s ONE PERFECT and His Name is Jesus!!!! Love to all and happy getting outdoors today and doing something fun or relaxing or both!!!
I guess the dog days also tamper with blog posts!
Don’t worry about it. In this wonderful age of “technology” things happen we have no control over!
In this 90 degree weather, my AC is out but it will be ok until it’s fixed. I have no control over it!
Everyone have a good Saturday and stay hydrated.
Brenda, at 7:00 this morning it was already 75 degrees and 97% humidity, today’s forecast is for 92 degrees and high humidity. It has been like this for the last 2 weeks and next week’s forecast is for the same with a little better chance of rain. When it it like this, the feel like temperature will be over 100 degrees. I know there is nothing I can do about it, I hope I am not sinning when I joke and say “I don’t remember God ever asking me about what kind of weather I wanted”. By the way, I live in Greenville County, SC – 30 miles from Greenville’s Main Street, one of the most rural areas left in the county. It is no comfort, but after all it is summer, how long is it before my favorite season, Fall. I am thinking about doing like I did when I was a young boy, going and sitting in the middle of the creek with a short bamboo pole fishing for horny heads or minnows for educated folks. Trust me, that would be a sight for sore eyes!
I didn’t get yesterday’s post or a couple of other days last week. I don’t know much about this computer stuff but have learned to go back to the day before and just click on next day’s post and that will usually work. The main thing is to in someway get each day’s post, I am addicted to each day’s BP&A post. It one of the first things each morning.
nothing here yesterday it ok God bless you Tipper!
A new dog days warning – they can make the subscription service go awry!!!
Thank you for explaining all that is involved in your creating and reader’s receiving your blog.
Lenora-Thank you! And yes another thing we can say happens during dog days 🙂
I did receive your post from yesterday and I commented on it. The one thing we all need to remember about the internet system is, it’s not perfect. It has bad days too. Like anything else, just be patient and it will get straightened out sooner, than later.
I didn’t receive your email yesterday either, but I just hopped over to the blog and read it. Love your daily posts.
I was able to read your blog by going directly to blind pig and the acorn. I look forward to your stories every day and wouldn’t want to miss it. I’m having my own kind of dog days here in the eastern panhandle of WV. We got a new puppy on Wednesday and he gets me up plenty early to read your postings. I just love dogs. Maybe you or your readers have a favorite dog story.
Debbie, I have always loved dogs, not these little yippee mouth house dogs but the good old ruff and tough hunting dogs. The ones that have known me would not believe I am now petting and taking care of a cat, it was my deceased daughters’s cat. After my wife’s death, I don’t joke much about wives anymore but I will say this, if you don’t believe a dog is a man’s best friend, just lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car for 30 minutes and see which one tries to kiss you when you open the trunk and let them out.
Didn’t receive the blog yesterday, Tipper.
Thanks!
Carolyn
