Granny and Pap
We have 2 computers-one in the girl’s room (not on-line), which they use for homework, games, and listening to music. The other computer is in my office and is used for blogging, photography, writing, and surfing the web.
Can you imagine life without the Internet? I can’t. Need a recipe it’s there, need help with homework-you can find it, looking for the words to an old song-they’re there too.
Along with the wonder of the web comes a few scary things. We don’t allow the girls to surf without permission and supervision-with our slow dial up they don’t often ask to go on-line.
At the girl’s school, first graders visit the computer lab at least once a week, and as the students grow older the amount of time spent in the lab increases. Chitter and Chatter are in 7th grade-they have computer class daily. Fluency in computer is a necessity for today’s students.
Granny doesn’t know much about computers and has never used one. However, lately she’s been worrying about my computer usage. Seems Granny’s afraid I’m going to catch one of those awful computer viruses. Oh Granny!

Tipper, teach Granny how to use the computer. Polls say more seniors use the computer these days than other generations.
I had an 85 year old student recently who uses his computer and writes wonderful stories. Look for his WWII story in the Smoky Mountain Sentinel for Veterans Day issue.

You’re so wise to monitor your dd’s computer usage. So many parents allow their children unsupervised internet access in the privacy of their bedrooms. I agree, the internet offers a wealth of information, but some of it is information best kept at bay from young minds, and old alike!
Does granny know how firewalls can inoculate computers? The vocabulary of techno stuff is pretty scary.
Your Granny is sweet and probably had a point. Too much computer time can cause some problems. It is scary to think of kids surfing the net without supervision. We have only one computer and a lap top that can go on the internet. Laptop is for Mom’s use only and the other in is in the livingroom. We had decided years ago, no T.V., no phones, and no computer in the bedrooms. 🙂
That’s like when my granny told me to turn off the car radio becuase it used too much electricity. Yeah.

It’s a good idea to have the computer with the Internet in your office. Kids need to be protected when online. There are dangers lurking in cyberspace. I do hope the computers at school have parental controls on them.
Granny is cute. I lived long before computers. We didn’t even have a tv but did have a radio and listened to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights.
I use my computer often to find out things and learn everyday. In that sense it is good, but sometimes too much time is spent online and not enough in the real world.

I love Granny! I could just hug her. She sounds so much like my sister’s boyfriend’s Mamaw (rest her soul). We were taking her back to North Carolina from Baltimore once and stopped at a truck stop to stretch our legs and eat lunch. I walked Mamaw to the ladies room to wash our hands and she was looking for the handles to turn on the water in the sink. I said, “Oh no, Mamaw, you just put your hands under the faucet and the water comes on automatically.” She was amazed! She looked at me and said, “Well, ain’t that just wonderful!” I had to laugh. Wonder what she would have thought of the self-flushing toilets? 🙂 xxoo

It’s so funny that I DID live in a world without internet, cell phones, etc, and I still can’t imagine it. Heck, there wasn’t even cable when I was a kid. I think caution is good though – with all things, in fact.

I use my computer several times a day. It’s the greatest thing in the world for an “information junkie”, and I must admit, that is me.
If I have a question about ANYTHING it’s on the internet somewhere!
I used to carry a list of used and out of print books I was looking for. When I was out of town I’d go to used book stores and search from my list. Now I just go to Half, Amazon, or Bookfinder. If it isn’t on one of those places I probably don’t really need it!
How sweet is that? You just gotta love the age gap!

I would not survive without my internet connection! My grandmother is actually online 🙂 She doesn’t hear well enough to have phone conversations – email is better.

I wouldn’t touch a computer when I was first around them for about 10 years. I was afraid I’d blow ours up, and I didn’t need to use it so I stayed away from it. My Bro gave me an e-mail account when I was in my 50’s and I got where I would turn the computer on and go to AOL and get my e-mails. It was wonderful to be able to send e-mails to my 3 brothers and my sister since they all lived at least 3 hours travel time away. Now, here I am at 63 trying my hand at writing a blog. You can teach an old dog, at least the old girl dogs, new tricks.

I’m with you. I don’t know what we did before the internet. We don’t even own a set of encycolpedias or a dictionary anymore. We google for it. It’s amazing how far everything has come even in the last 20 years, isn’t it?

Tipper we also have two computers, one in my office another laptop that travels around the house depending on who is using it.
We love the ability to look stuff up at a whim and making new friends as well.
Now that’s a disease I had not considered. Best watch yourself–maybe wear gloves and a mask while typing?
Tipper – I love your blog, you are an awesome writer. My husband and I were just talking last evening about adding parental controls to the TV and computor so the grandkids can’t log on un-supervised. Can’t be too careful, esp. when it concerns children. Thanks for visiting Raising Eden too btw.
That is so cute about your granny not wanting you to catch a virus. We never had computers growing up, we had to use encyclopedias and the library for our homework. I never thought much about it, but I bet encyclopedia sales sure have went down since the internet. But you know, we still have an old set and I look up things every now and then, there’s still nothing like a book in hand.

We have dial-up and my children don’t use the internet at home, unlees I’m with them. We go to our library once a week and they’re allowed to get online there, the library’s internet is connected to the local school system and bad sites are blocked. I’m still right there, though!
Morning Tipper! Isn’t that just like a grandmother?! But can understand her feelings, as many can testify since the www, most have fallen victim or prey to all types of maneuvers created by not so scrupulous users. You’re wise in fostering a certain cautious respect in your girls’ attitude towards the computer. And, you’re right, Tipper. I can’t imagine not owning a computer just as I can’t imagine not having a refrigerator or washer/dryer. I too have a cautious respect for it, but in the same breath, how can I have discovered such wonderful blogs, such as yours! :))
