I have a few more Thankful November winners to announce. If you see your name please send your mailing address to me at blindpigandtheacorn @ gmail.com and I will send you your book or cd.

The winner of Roaming the Mountains written by John Parris is Ashely Blankenship who said “How very sad. I had no idea. Would love to read Mr. Paris’ book.”

The winner of Appalachia The Voices of Sleeping Birds written by Cynthia Rylant is Linda Reinking who said “Some of my best memories are of sitting outside snapping beans with my mom. She canned a lot of our garden. Thank you for bringing those happy moments back to my memory.”

The winner of Dorie Woman of the Mountains written by Florence Cope Bush is Jeanie who said “I’ve been trying to win a copy of Dorie for a long time. Maybe this time I’ll get lucky!”

The winner of Appalachian Values written by Loyal Jones is Dee who said “What a cute story. I sure hope you get all the snow you want in North Carolina, but I sure hope Pennsylvania gets very little. Of course, I would like snow if roads and sidewalks would stay clear so falls and accidents were not so plentiful.”

The winner of “Songs of Christmas” cd by Paul and Pap is Kathy Dunkel who said “Thank you for sharing, I’m sure it’s not easy to find time for you all to get together but it’s definitely a treat for us followers.”

The five winners of Celebrating Appalachian Food – Recipes & Stories from Mountain Kitchens written by Jim Casada and Tipper Pressley are:

Emma who said “So glad to hear that Granny is doing so well! I wanted to attend the signing at Mast in Waynesville, but the grandbabies came to visit and going to the playground was the choice of the day! Hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving”

Laura Lee Baird who said “Thank you for the update on Granny. I will remember to be praying for her. Sunday, a week ago, I lost my daddy suddenly. We had a very difficult relationship and I prayed it would be fixed before something like this happened. The Lord layed it on my heart to call him and so I did. I called him on my birthday on the 8th because I knew he would forget. That was the last time I talked to him because he died on the 12th. I don’t know why I shared all that, but the flaws in a cookbook reminded me of how we are flawed, but still have a purpose. We are still useful. We can still bring joy to someone. I would love to get one of your cookbooks. I’m always so excited for a new one. I usually sit down and read it like any other book.God bless ya’ll!!”

S Jenkins who said “A good cookbook is still good despite any flaws!! Thanks for all your hard work and dedication!”

Christine J. who said “WooHoo! Congratulations to this round of winners! I’d love a flawed copy of your and Jim’s cookbook, because I would be perfectly happy with it, even if it has a wrong name in it. It just another wonderful story added to the cookbook.”

Nicki K. who said “I have been trying to get rid of things in my home since my husband passed away in September but it would be an honor to take in one of your cookbooks. Congratulations to all the previous winners. So glad to hear the progress Granny has made & I will continue to pray for her daily as she travels this path. Hugs!”

The winner of Foxfire 4 is Marian who said “My granny was born in the Ozark mountains in Arkansas in 1900. She talked often about how her family grew a garden and saved seeds. She had a garden right up to her death in 1995. I don’t think I’ll Ever stop missing her.”

Congratulations to all the winners! Don’t forget to email me your mailing address.

  1. We’re busy working up our pecans and black walnuts! The walnuts sure are tough to crack and dig the meat out!! I will have to try your cookie recipe for them. Happy Christmas

  2. Well, I would be delighted and honored to win a “flawed” copy of your cookbook – I would consider it a unique birthday present! 🙂

  3. Thank you for all your writings, video and recipes. I’m away from home so a bit behind and trying to catch up. I’ve loved the cooking and recipes you’ve put online and have used quite a few. They’ve turned out really well. Some are like the ones handed down to me from my momma and some are new to me. Would love a book because I’m sure there are a lot more of good recipes.

  4. Tipper, every morning I look forward to reading your blog. You are like a breath of fresh air in this polluted world. You and your family bless so many with your writings, your videos, your music, and your giving spirit! I’m thankful to have found your YouTube channel and your blog. You have such a wonderful family. I’m very thankful to hear your mother has finished her treatments and is on the road to recovery. She, like her daughter, is so smart and talented too! God has truly blessed your family. Thanks for sharing your blessings with so many. I would treasure a “flawed” cookbook from true Appalachian cooks! My mother was one of the best Appalachian cooks and a hard working gardener too, even in her 80’s. Your hard work yet pleasantness while working, your making every minute count, and the way find different ways to cook and preserve your bounty remind me of her. I admire your dedication and your thoughtfulness to your followers! Thank you for all you do to educate and entertain your followers. May God continue to bless you and your loved ones.

  5. This Thanksgiving was a little different than we usually do. My father in law had gotten bad news about his health so all the family gathered at their house this year. We want to spend as much time as we can with him. He’s almost 80 yrs old. It was wonderful getting everyone together. They said that was the best Thanksgiving ever.

  6. Hi Tipper,
When I saw you described the copy as “flawed” it made me chuckle. That could describe my cooking every now and again, lol. My hubby and I enjoy your videos. I hear a lot of familiar words and we are hundreds of miles away in Western PA. Do you say you’re going to “red up the house” when you are cleaning up around the house? It’s something I’ve heard for years. I don’t know if I’m spelling it right though. I thought it might be a form of “ ready” like getting ready for something or cleaning before a get together. Just curious if it’s in your book of Appalachian words or not? Laurie

  7. Hoping you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We ate too much but it was so nice to be with family. Cookbooks are wonderful. I have several and love the ones focusing on local goodies. One that is a treasure is by the church my ancestors founded and we were married in. Brick Church in Whitsett, NC. Precious memories. A “ flawed book” would be an honor.

  8. So thoughtful of you to share! I love a good story telling cookbook, they mean so much more & the food comes alive with the sharing.

  9. I ordered my own copy of this cookbook and both Jim and Tipper signed it for me, it has a lot of excellent recipes. I would like to win a copy to give my Mom.

  10. Tipper, you sure are of the giving spirit, and to book lovers, what better gifts? I envy those who live near you who can see you often and be gifted with your smile. Your presence would be a present.

  11. Recipes can be googled online and saved in apps, but there’s nothing like handling a favorite cookbook and thumbing through stained, splotchy pages. Good memories for sure.

  12. WooHoo! I won!!! I can’t believe I won! Thank you Tipper for your generosity and kindness to all your readers, we all appreciate you so much, regardless if your giving away something or not. Congratulations to the other who won a cookbook too! I’ve already won, so I’m not trying to win again, just wanting to say Thank you and congratulate the others. If by some miracle of a chance my name is pulled again, please give this next copy to someone else.

  13. Congratulations to the winners! Tipper, I sure would love a copy of your cookbook. It would definitely get used in my kitchen.

  14. Brrrr! Winter has arrived here (east-central Kansas). We had 6 in. of snow Sat., and the temperature has plummeted. Wish I could cozy up to your woodstove. Our family burned coal in a Warm Morning stove when I was a child. It was so nice to rush in from the cold & warm up next to the stove. Not quite the same with central heating.

  15. Congratulations to this week’s winners. I’m hoping that I’m able to win a ‘preloved’ book as well. I love all the songs, stories, tips and tricks you share with us on a daily basis. Also hoping good health for you and your family going into the Christmas season. Blessings to all!

  16. This Texas Nana could sure use some Appalachian cooking! I love watching your videos and pray for blessings for you and your family in the coming year.

  17. Hi Tipper and Pressley family. I love watching your videos, especially the holiday ones. November has been a difficult one for my family. My dad has been in the hospital for a couple weeks. We decided to postpone Thanksgiving. Then my mother-in-law passed away so we are working on funeral arrangements. Your videos are a great help when I’m trying to relax, very comforting. Thanks for what you do.

  18. Yesterday was the birth anniversary of my great-great-grandfather, John Harvey DeHart. He was born November 26, 1804, and was my great-grandmother Lydia DeHart’s father.

The Hutchins’, Tabors, and DeHarts are my people in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina being principally from Swain County.

  19. I would so love to win this cookbook. I’m scheduled for a complete hip replacement surgery soon so really can’t afford it at the moment. This would definitely make for some good reading while I’m recovering. Good luck to all

  20. What a treat to learn the names of the people who have won a “Thankful November” prize. And even more lovely it is to read their words. Thank you, Tipper, for all the beauty you facilitate through your generosity, blog and videos.

  21. I would love to win a copy of your flawed cook book. Your cooking reminds me of my grandmothers and mom’s good old down home cooking. Since finding your videos on you tube I feel a great kinship with your beautiful family. My ancestors came from that area and listening to your accents remind of me of my Dad and Mom and other close kinfolk. Your blogs helped me get in touch with a memory and helped heal my forgotten trauma. I am thankful for the opportunity to finally heal and the blessings it brought. My prayers to you and your family that you will continue to share your lives to entertain and help others. Blessings and prayers for Granny that she continues to do well.

  22. Good morning! Congratulations to the winners ! So fun ! And thank you so much for another chance to win your beautiful cookbook ! Love to you all !

  23. Congratulations to all of the winners! We sure enjoyed watching last night’s video and could almost smell the sausage!! We had a good laugh about Matt’s popcorn recipe. 🙂 Have a great day everyone!!

  24. Congratulations to all the announced winners! I have been watching your recipe videos and to have these recipes all in one place would be a real prize. Flaws? What flaws? It’s all good.

  25. Tipper, I would love to finally win one of your flawed cookbooks because money is tight right now, so I keep entering 🙂 Congratulations to all the past winners. One of my children bought your and Jim’s new cookbooks, and she really enjoys it. My continued prayers for Granny and think of your family all the time. On YouTube, we never miss a video – my better half also knows you all by name! God Bless!

  26. Good morning sunshines!
Congratulations to all the winners! You’ll be blessed by any item you won!!

It’s so cold and windy, but there are so many things to be thankful for! God is so good!

May you find many blessings in your day!! I count all y’all as one of mine! Praying Granny and Katie are feeling well!

  27. Tipper, I sure would love to win any of the prizes. I’m Appalachian and my family and friends tells me that I am a great cook. I’ve tried many of your recipes but my next one will be for your homemade rolls. I wanted to make the Arsh Potatoe Cake for Thanksgiving but time and energy ran out. Thank you for all you and your family are doing to keep Appalachian life real. We need to stay true to our roots.

  28. As I have written before by the time I follow one recipe from your book the book would be ‘flawed’ i.e. contaminated with the ingredients. Congrats to all the winners.

  29. Congrats to all the winners for November so far. I love getting my cookbook out and just reading through, but also looking for dinner ideas, desserts and what ever strikes my fancy that day. Your sandwiches with Matt looked so good. Eggs is one of my favorites foods. And the coffee Matt made look steamy and delicious. Prayers up for Granny, hope she is starting to feel better and more so every day. Prayers also for radiant Katie. She is glowing in these past weeks. Corie and she are such lovely people. Austin too. Have a great week and God’s blessings to you all today and always. Jennifer

  30. Good Morning Tipper. I look forward everyday to read this blog and watching your YouTube videos. I would love to win the cookbook. I have changed my way of making cornbread to your way. Merry Christmas to You and Your Beautiful God Loving Family.

  31. Oh some mornings I get a complimentary ride on the struggle bus. This morning is slow, cold and wet. Perfect for coffee and the black walnut bread from your recipe book which gets better every day -believe it or not!!! I am glad to be seeing November in the rear view. Ta ta now!!! I got my TRUE SEED catalog and I’m thinking already about spring. Ya know, Tipper, I think your optimism has affected me in a good way! I got stuff to do and hopefully a new and better year ahead. Congrats to winners, but ain’t we ALL winners??? Positive affirmation here… Anybody who’s over 50 and still motivated has to be a winner!!! Granny and Lucky know the prayers are going up and the blessings raining down!

  32. Love reading your posts. They bring back so many memories of my growing up years in Georgia. My Dad and Mom were older and I’m the youngest so they held many of the same traditions I read and hear about in your stories. Would love to have a cookbook. Love watching your videos, I talk about them to everyone I know who love the old foodways.

  33. We have an “unflawed” copy of the cookbook already but would love to be able to share the flawed copy with family members.

  34. Congrats to all the winners! So fun! So, Tipper, my husband and I were watching you and Matt sitting around your wood burning stove and that gave me the incentive to make sausage and egg sandwiches this morning for our breakfast! Matt is a fantastic cook! We have our chairs sitting right in front of the TV and my husband made the observation that it was as if the four of us were visiting! And you know what? He is absolutely correct! Have a happy Monday. We love your channel!

  35. Congratulations to all the winners, we are all grateful to you for doing this giveaway each year, thank you Tipper.

  36. I lived w watching all your Thanksgiving preparations and a second copy of your cookbook would be a great Christmas gift for my best friend who lives in Tennessee.

  37. Congratulations all! Thank you Tipper for sharing your world with us. Im praying for all of you. Happy Holidays

  38. Congratulations to all the winners! I was blessed to be able to purchase your cookbook and have it signed in Murphy, N.C. I love reading the stories to go along with the recipes!

  39. Flawed or not, it would be a fine addition to my cookbook cupboard. I enjoy you writing and Celebrating Appalachia videos. Thanks for taking us along.

  40. I’ve been using the Deer Hunter’s method of frying deer tenderloin, and it’s so good I will never go back to my old way of doing it! I’d love to have a copy of the cookbook, since I’m sure all the recipes in it are as good as that one.

So thankful you were able to celebrate another season with Granny. My own parents are in their twilight years as well, and every moment is precious.

  41. Morning, Tipper! It was fun to reread comments by my fellow followers! We all love whatever you share with us on a daily basis because we all share your love of Appalachia. Our lives are blessed for the sharing you do. May God bless you and yours and all your followers!

  42. I’d be honored to win a cookbook from you. I live in Georgia, 9 hours away from my momma in Louisiana. Y’all’s videos remind me of growing up and my kinfolks there, and serve as a sort of substitute when I can’t get home as often as I’d like. A lot of y’all’s dialect, sayings, and the accent is there same as I grew up hearing so I feel like I know y’all! Thanks for sharing with us!
    Lucy

  43. I am so happy for all the winners! I know they will enjoy their books. Over the Holiday weekend, I would get up and fix my coffee and read and look at your videos. Our son came in when I was reading Saturday morning and started talking. My husband told him wait a few minutes, she’s talking to Tipper and Matt…….isn’t that sweet – he knows Tipper and Matt by name! Love and prayers to all of you and Granny and Little Mama too.

  44. I am thankful that I have found a group of people that love Appalachia, and our way of life as much as I do.

  45. Tell us about the cast iron Dutch oven, that the Deer Hunter used for is venison ham roast, my husband loved it, he thought it might be an old Wagoner?

  46. I appreciate what you’re doing, expanding your family to include all of us. The cookbook must be awesome if you and Jim labored over it. What’s Matt’s favorite way to prepare his deer when he drags it home? Congrats on success on every front.

  47. Congratulations to all the winners! I wasn’t one but I feel like a winner every morning when I read your posts. It’s always a good reminder to start the day grateful.

  48. Good morning Tipper:

Congratulations to all the winners, I did purchase your book but if I did win I would much rather have the flawed one and donate my new one. The flawed one would remind me of my mother’s old cookbooks which unfortunately I was not lucky enough to get one. Hoping Granny is feeling well and our beautiful Katie too, I know the last video I saw with Katie, she was absolutely glowing, how I remember those days. God bless us all.

  49. God bless Granny Wilson, love and prayer from north Georgia, God bless you and your family ♥️

  50. Good morning, Tipper. I’m fairly new to Blind Pig and the Acorn and only subscribed last week. I don’t know exactly when I discovered your blog but do know that the name caught my eye first. The first blog I saw featured several photos, one of which was of a woman bending down to check her apples that were drying on the porch. Well, I felt like I had been grabbed by a time warp and all of a sudden I was a barefoot 4-5 year old watching my mother climb a ladder to spread her apple slices out on the tin roof of the shed to dry. Such a wonderful sensation.

I really enjoyed your train video last night. The mention of the Louvins brought back memories, too. I grew up in northeast Alabama on Sand Mountain (the very tail end of the Appalachians) just outside Henagar Alabama up on Pea Ridge. The Louvins (or as my folks
called said “them Loudermilk boys”) lived a couple of miles away during their youth and early teenage years .

You and Paul and your girls are so very talented as was your father and his brothers. It’s been a pleasure to explore your music but your blogs are what fills my heart with the sweetest memories. Thank you for all your efforts to preserve the Appalachian heritage.

    Have a great Monday.

    Myra

    1. Welcome, I hope I don’t run you off. My aunt and uncle lived at Chattanooga off East Brainerd Road and would spend a lot of time at the lake at Sand Mountain. Both have now passed and I haven’t been back since 95.

      1. Thank you, Randy, for the welcome. I lived in Chattanooga for five years or so and worked for a time on Brainerd Road in a building just next to East Gate Mall. I have family who live in East Brainerd now. And family in Hixson – well, Middle Valley area. Was the lake you went to Guntersville Lake, maybe? It’s the biggest I guess. I’ve enjoyed your comments and look forward to more. Have a great day (although it’s late on Monday evening now as I get back to Tipper’s blog). Myra

  51. Congratulations to all of the winners. Since my luck stayed the same ( bad) I am going to buy about about 3 of the books. Suppose to be plenty of frost on the pumpkins for the next 3 or 4 nights around here. The weatherman said a day or two ago, after all of the spring rain we are now in a severe drought, nearly 9 inches behind in rainfall for the year. It has been mighty dry since June.

    1. Howdy, Randy. My older brother Frank, who passed last February at 95, lived off Brainerd Road in Chattanooga for about 10 years in the ’60-’70s. I believe the area he lived in was part of the Missionary Ridge US Civil War battle area but not, of course, in the park.

      1. Robert, they lived on James Avenue. His wife, my aunt by marriage grew up at bottom of the Incline Railroad, you could almost her mother’s house from the parking lot. They are now buried in the cemetery there. They lived in Greenville, SC in the early 60’s while my uncle worked for a Toledo scale company. After learning the business, they moved back to Chattanooga (late 60’s) and he started his own business servicing the scales around the area. Much of his business was for carpet mills in northern Georgia.

  52. It would be wonderful to win your cookbook, I’ve tried some of your recipes in the past and they were always so good!
Glad to hear that Granny is doing well and that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  53. Thank you Tipper I would love a flawed cookbook. We all come to salvation flawed and are made perfect in his eyes. Your and Jim’s cook book will be prefect in my eyes Tipper. My prayers for Granny always held dear, my prayers for you, Matt and the girls as well Tipper.

  54. Tipper I just have enjoyed your giveaways this month. So happy for all the winners & hope they enjoy the hours of joy these books will bring.

  55. Our family put together a cookbook with a collection of family recipes and pictures with stories attached. It is one of my treasures. Family traditions and memories all wrapped up with favorite foods that I remember from my childhood. I cook the “plain’ recipes all the time for my husband and myself. I’d love to have a “flawed” copy of your book for on my shelf next to my family’s.

  56. Yay for everyone who won a book or cd today!! It’s a cold morning in the mountains of WV—30 degrees, but with the blustery winds the weatherman says it feels like 19– Brrrr. It’s a good day to clean and decorate the house and put up our tree. I enjoyed your video last night. Cooking on your wood stove and keeping warm looked so relaxing. I made soup in a big iron pot on our wood stove a couple times before. Matt is right—it’s good to have it for emergency heat and emergency cooking. Have a blessed week!!

  57. I’d hire Matt out to cook in a ‘New York minute’. He does know his way around food. My hubby likes a potato sandwich periodically with is an east one. We do talk, when watching one of your wonderful videos and say to each other, ‘remember that’ or ‘doing that’. You and your family does have a way of bringing some of our memories to the forefront. Both of us are Granny’s age and reflect on the things you say she said. Of course we were reared in the south so we do have our country ways much like yours. If you are offering your almanac again this year, I must have missed where you were showing how I may purchase one. Prayers for Granny and I do hope she is still receiving them. God Bless.

  58. Tipper I purchased the cookbook soon after it was available. My son enjoyed reading it and stopped by to make copies of recipes so I finally gave him the book. Would be great to get another one even it is flawed. Thank you for your YouTube videos We enjoy them

  59. It looked like you had a fabulous thanksgiving day with family and friends as we did too.
the picture idea was a great one so elaborate with the holders Matt made bless you and I was sorry to hear granny wasn’t feeling well she would have loved it continued prayers for granny’s full recovery
Also I would love more updates of how Katie’s feeling let’s see some side shots of that precious belly with baby Presley in it
