Thankful November – Brother Harmony

November 22, 2024

collage of family

Over the years Pap and his brother made music together as The Wilson Brothers. They sang gospel music in the polished high harmonies of the classic brother duet style. They performed at churches, festivals, homecomings, and benefits throughout the south. Over the years they won many awards including the 1998 North Carolina Heritage Award. They were also featured in many publications such as The Old-Time Herald.

Today’s Thankful November giveaway is one of their cds: The Wilson Brothers At the John C. Campbell Folk School & On Radio. The cd has 34 tracks on it—which is a lot of music! Some of the tracks are of the banter and talk that happens during a live performance. To be entered in the giveaway leave a comment on this post. *Giveaway ends November 27, 2024.

If you’d like to pick up your own copy go here.

Here’s one of the songs from the cd recorded at the Folk School.

The cd is really a treasure. A few of the tracks give a peak into the live shows by sharing the mc’s intros and the personalities of Pap and his brother Ray.

Last night’s video: Help Me Clean Off The Porch.

  1. Even though gone now, I love that your Pap is still with you in memories and these recordings. What a treasure to be able to forever hear his voice. So many were able to enjoy his music which is another level of gratitude for him. You carry on his legacy by sharing your thoughts and
food and family; generations of your family will have you forever too.

  2. Thanks for sharing the song. We have been sharing your blog and videos with family. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  3. Tipper, thank you so much for putting this CD in the drawing. I always enjoy your Pap’s music when I have come across recordings you’ve shared and the ones Paul has posted on his youtube channel.

  4. Got my introduction to Blind Pig one night just fooling around on youtube & happened across Paul & Jerry singing Teardrops Falling In The Snow. Played it through a few times before picking up on Pap’s beautiful tenor harmony. Saw the link and been following ever since. Sure would like to have that CD.

  5. I’m rather fond of brother harmony myself. I’m curious if the Crowe brothers and the Wilson brothers ever performed at some of the same gigs…I’ll have to ask daddy. Seems like they surely would have crossed paths at some point in their musical careers. I’d love to have their cd to add to my collection

  6. I would have loved to have heard them sing in person! But thanks to you, you have shared many of these songs and we do enjoy listening to them! May you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving Tipper! You are a blessing to many! Thank You!

  7. That was beautiful, Tipper. Thank you for sharing it.

I grew up in Raleigh in an old house in not as good shape as some barns I’ve been in. It had no central heat and no running hot water until I was in my late teens. Plaster falling from the walls was not uncommon. Despite those conditions, we had an old, out of tune piano that sat in the hallway that housed the stairway to ‘upstairs’ and where our front door stood. My oldest brother’s wife played piano. She could read music but also played by ear quite wonderfully. One of my favorite memories is of her on the bench of that piano and my brothers and sisters (8 of them) and their spouses and my Pa surrounding her singing songs from the Baptist Hymnal or from memory. We sang both sacred and popular secular songs. We had a bass, several sopranos, an alto, several baritones and one tenor. My recollection is that we sounded great, which was probably a huge stretch of the imagination. On one occasion that I remember, a neighbor walking down the street came in and joined us. Those who never experienced family sings cannot imagine what they missed.

  8. Oh, Tipper, I loved the song. I so enjoy old time gospel and bluegrass music. I sure hope I win this CD. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. wow you are so lucky to have these old recordings to keep listening to their voices must bring make a lot of happy memories for you of times spent together

  10. I haven’t heard this one before, but I loved it! Like the Wilson brothers, my daddy and his brother played bluegrass and sang and played on radio stations around North Georgia. Music was such a huge part of their lives and it always brings back such wonderful memories of my childhood when I hear songs like this. I know I’m dating myself, but even on Sunday mornings, Daddy would tune in and we’d listen to The Chuck Wagon Gang as we got ready for church. There’s something about gospel music that just soothes our soul. Wouldn’t take anything for the memories.

    1. Betty, if you are dating yourself, them I am too. I remember my parents turning on our small black and white tv on Sunday mornings and listening to The Chuck Wagon Gang and the other groups back at that time. Today’s religious music is not the same. If we weren’t on our death bed, we were going to church on Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night, my parents never ask me if I wanted to go, until I married and left home I was going to church even if they had to drag me. One song of that time that has stuck with me is “Sorry I Never Knew You” sung by Naomi and the Sego brothers. If they song does not make someone with a family think, nothing else will.

  11. Beautiful! Brought tears to my eyes. Remember my Mom singing this song. I too, am so glad for God’s grace. Thank you for the memory.

  12. So beautiful!! In listening to a lot of Pap’s singing, he has the most beautiful high tenor voice I think I have ever heard. Hubby thinks so too.

  13. I love the harmonies and the words of the song. The old hymns are most precious to me.
Memories flood my mind of the summers sitting on my grandparents’ porch. Theirs was a huge u shaped concrete porch that surrounded the front of their house. There was always a wonderful cooling breeze that blew across the front as we sat in rocking chairs shelling beans or breaking beans:) It truly was a precious time for me and sometimes when they really were having a heat wave in NE MS, no air-conditioning, so we would sit a spell on the porch and fan our selves as we rocked in the rocking chairs and I was privileged to hear their stories of growing up out on the farm. I do remember my Mother having beans stored in a pillow case. Had forgot all about it till you mentioned it:)

  14. Wow! Tipper – I have not heard that song like in forever! – like back when I was a child. (p.s. if my name drawn, because of my locale re: shipping, please draw for another winner.)

  15. How fortunate you are to be able to hear the recorded voices of your loved ones. I would love to be able to hear my dad’s voice again.

  16. Dear Tipper,
I’ve never heard this song before, but it sure is beautiful! I love anything Pap sings……..I just close my eyes and focus on his high tenor. I bought the Christmas cd last year, and here it is time to put it back in the car again! Seems like this year just flew by once again! I hope this winter you get a foot of fluffy snow!☃️❄️☃️ I’d love to see a video of you and the boys sliding down the driveway!! What fun!!
    Love, Jackie

  17. I could listen to Pap sing all day long! When you used to post the playlist on your daily blog, it was hard for me to get too far away from the computer.

  18. Beautiful! I bet you treasure all of the singing your family shares with us. I know I treasure the memories of my dad’s family and their perfect harmonizing. Thanks for the generous offer.

  19. Beautiful! the old hymns I learned growing up brings back memories of so many who are singing the new songs with Jesus! Thanks for sharing!

  20. I always enjoy your family’s music so much. I also enjoyed watching you clean off the porch. It’s funny how interesting it is to peek into your life each day. I use my porch for sitting and also storing things like you do. We keep our shoes and boots we wear outside by the door. There are toys that the grandkids play with. I don’t have a porch swing, but we have a wooden porch glider. I dry our onions on the table on the porch. It is useful and a great place to sit and watch the sun coming up or just watch the wildlife running around. Your porch is all clean for Thanksgiving…now you just have lots of cooking to do! I am cooking two dinners…one on Thanksgiving day for my son and family that lives near and a second one on Saturday for the whole family, including my daughter and her family that live a few hours away. It will be a busy and wonderful few days together—bustling with the laughter of children running around and playing. I can’t wait!

  21. I love this song. Have not heard this song in a long time. I’m so glad ( no pun intended) that I still have a cd player in my car so I hope I win!

  22. There for a time Mom and Dad sang on a radio program when I was small. Mr. Perry, a church member, had a grocery store/post office at Honeybee, KY and also had a wash/canning house out back where the program was recorded. “O Say But I’m Glad” reminded me. The store is gone now and the Perry’s moved away long ago. Those were good days back then.

  23. Really enjoyed the video last night. Proved that you guys are just regular down to earth people! Continued prayers for victims especially as cold weather here.

  24. You are so blessed to have all the recordings, videos & pictures of past times in your family. I love listening to your families music & watching the videos. I’m so glad your girls are continuing the tradition of recording family times through their channel along side of yours. It would be an honor to win this cd of Pap & his brother. Hugs!

  25. I had forgotten all about this song—the flood of memories it brought back of my uncle (who led singing at church)and my aunt (who played the piano in church) singing this song–their voices so clear in my memories ear…..brings tears to my eyes as I long to hear them once again singing the great old hymns of my youth….I do hope in heaven I will be granted that privilege but since all our focus will be on Christ not on our loved ones then wonderful memories are probably just an earthly thing helping us make it day to day when we need a lift (God is so kind to bless our minds with wonderful memories)

  26. That’s a nice tune Tipper. I’m curious, who sang the high part and who sang the low part? It’s true, their voices blend beautifully.

  27. in teaching English as a second language to people from around the world we used music and found that singing a language was much easier than trying to repeat words and phrases. We used several old choruses and put together our own books to use. Music unites us.

  28. It would be an honor to have their collection! Tipper, we received about 3.5 inches of snow and it’s so beautiful. I thought of you as it came down. You’re the only one I know that loves snow like my momma and me. Have a beautiful day!

  29. There is nothing better than family harmony. My father in law was a musician in his own right, I remember him talking about the Wilson Brothers and saying how good they were, at the time he did this I had no idea who they were. Nowadays I often listen to Pap and the others with him singing those good old time gospel hymns, none of these new so called religious songs for me. Doing this helps pick me up on my bad days.

  30. I enjoy their music so much!!! I would be blessed if I’m drawn as the winner! Your porch clean up was interesting as always. You and your family put smiles on my face! Continued prayers for all. God bless you and yours❤❤
