Charlie Louvin

I got Chatter to help me out on a tribute song for Charlie Louvin’s recent birthday.

“See The Big Man Cry” tells an all too familiar story for many marriages, but it’s a very well written song with a great beat and melody. This was one of Charlie’s bigger hits. It came out not long after he and Ira parted ways musically.

It’s special to me because Charlie once dedicated the song to me and Pap on the Grand Old Opry. We weren’t there in person but heard him on the radio as we were driving down the road.

You can easily find the original on YouTube, along with some other covers of the song.

The lyrics are below:

The other day, I walked out on the street. I happened to see a pretty, young woman, a little bitty boy. He looked back at me…

“See the big man cry, Mama,” that’s what I heard him say. “See the big man cry, Mama. He looks like his heart will break.”

I followed them to a pet shop window. The little boy stopped to see. He looked up at her and said, “If I had a daddy, he’d buy that puppy for me.”

“See the big man cry, Mama,” that’s what I heard him say. “See the big man cry, Mama. He looks like his heart will break.”

I wanted to tell him I was his daddy, he sure had a pretty mom, But the judge had said I could never see them for the things I’d said and done.

“See the big man cry, Mama,” that’s what I heard him say. “See the big man cry, Mama. He looks like his heart will break.”

Son, as you grow older, find someone who’s dear, You better stick by her, take care of her, so you don’t ever hear…

“See the big man cry, Mama,” that’s what I heard him say. “See the big man cry, Mama. He looks like his heart will break.”

Thanks for watching!

  1. I just got a chance to listen to the video. Paul has such a great singing voice, I really enjoy hearing him sing. He is talented playing that guitar too. Chatter has talent to pick beautifully and can play any string instruments y’all have. The song really had a good tune to it, but the words were sad, then most reality songs do since they come from a place of heartache. I’d never heard this song before, but they did it well to honor your friend.

  2. So good…. I can hear Paul & his lyrics plainly. Music not over powering his voice. Thank you for a good memory.

  3. Great job Paul and Corie! You just can’t beat the old songs. I think Mr. Charlie would have been proud! Thanks for sharing.

  4. Corie and Paul you both did a lovely job on that song. As I listen to the song, I can feel it stirring my soul.

  5. I remember hearing that song back when it was on the radio. The story was so clear and sad. It’s nice to hear those old songs again. Thanks.

  6. I didn’t know Charlie did one of my favorite Louvin songs without Ira. Charlie would be proud of Paul and Chatter’s version of his song.

  7. Such a wonderful rendition of such a great song. Some of the old songs are the best. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Some mighty fine pickin’ and singin’. This is my favorite Charlie Louvin song. I also noticed–almost immediately–the copy of a book in the background that holds a prominent and important place on my shelves of reference materials, Abramson and Haskell’s massive “Encyclopedia of Appalachia.”

  9. Paul and Corrie did a fabulous version of this song. Several weeks ago I read that this was one of the songs Charlie Louvin played in his final public appearance, which was on the Marty Stuart Show on RFDTv. He sang it with his son, Sonny. The show was taped December 2, 2010, and Charlie passed away 55 days later from cancer. I really enjoy listening to all the songs Paul performs, and I am so glad his Dad introduced him to the Louvin Brothers, who heavily influenced Paul into becoming the great musician he is today. The genre the Louvin’s music is in has such a wonderful sound. It would be fantastic if this genre became popular again in current artists’ sound. (I hope that sentence made sense, but I know all the Blind Pig fans understand what I am trying to say!)

  10. I actually have heard that song or tune before on several occasions. It’s pretty dang good!!! I’m sure there’s a many a big man who’s had to cry cause he can’t see his children anymore on account of some NO account judge setting in his high place…until lawyers have to live by their own judgements, nothing will change and it’s all a racket to break you down. To be acknowledged by Charlie on the Grand Ole Opry like you and Pap is a great honor. Paul and Katie really did a great job on this song. I much enjoyed it! Thanks so much. If you see a big man crying, we will know probably why…

  11. I remember that song well. I knew Charlie slightly in Nashville.Would run into him when there would be a little gathering someplace. Nashville in the old days was kinda like a country store…everybody hung out at the same places…the same offices….etc.
