solve learning riddles from appalachia

I’m sharing another riddle from “Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties” by James Still.

When first I wear my dress in spring
It is a yellow fey,
In fall my garment’s whitest down,
In winter blown away.

The last riddle I shared was from “Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties” by James Still.

Round as an apple, Flat as a plane,
(Hole in my pocket, Beggar again.)

Most folks got the answer: a coin.

  1. I’ll say dandelion too although their white parachute seeds often appear from late spring to late fall. I see their yellow blooms from late winter to late fall. I’ve seen then blooming under the snow.
I have a plant here that produces millions of white seeds similar to that of a dandelion but the flower is purplish. I don’t know what it is, I call it a milkthistle.
I think cotton has a yellowish flower and produces a white seed thingy but I don’t think it blows away in the winter. Cottonwood trees do produce white fibers similar to cotton but I don’t think its blooms are yellow and it don’t wait until fall to release its fibers. I could be wrong.

  2. Our Florida dandelions (my favorite flower) have a much shorter life ending in June for sure but I can’t think of anything else that fits this.

  3. I’m guessing Dandelion. I remember picking them for my Mommy when they were yellow and all the fun I had blowing them in the wind when they turned white. 🙂

  4. I have no idea but the first thing that came to me was cotton, but then dandelion sounds like it also. This one has me stumped. Last night’s reading was so touching. What a life Alex had. I can’t wait to see what you will pick out next. Going to be hard to beat this one!!

  5. Well…That’s really some stumper of a riddle. I used to go tramping around the woods a lot. A small bloodroot can look yellow in the spring until its white petals become more prominent, but a dandelion would be the easy answer

  6. I have no clue, but after reading others guesses, I’m thinking Ron and some of the others might have it right saying a dandelion. The only thing is when a dandelion turns white with its seeds I’m thinking that’s usually in late spring or early summer, but that’s when I notice them in the yard. I don’t know, I’m totally stumped on this one. It will be interesting to see the answer.

  7. It seems to be a dandelion with its seasons mixed up 🙂 Yellow in spring, then the white seeds mostly in summer, then all is blown away. I have found when it does not seem to fit exactly, I should not try to make my answer fit. I should question my answer. However, this is a fun riddle, and not a pop quiz.

  8. Snow?…wow, this is a risky one. Haven’t heard the word fey in a long time…as far as Alex goes, well, what an ending to a wonderful man. Wonder what he is discussing with God. Gotta be a tale that is interesting. Thanks for the wonderful book you shared with us….and can’t wait til next Friday…
