solve learning riddles from appalachia

Today I’m sharing a riddle I recently saw at Spud’s Shack in Murphy, NC.

What is greater than God, worse than the devil
A rich man wants for it, a poor man has it
If you eat it you will starve to death?

The last riddle I shared was from Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties by James Still.

Opens like a pocketbook,
Closes with a click,
A tent of black spread in air
On a walking stick.

Most folks got this one: an umbrella.

Last night’s video: Family History and Stories of Opal Corn Myers 17.

  1. Nothing! I’m so proud of myself that I was able to figure it out & not have to read the comments for the answer. 🙂 Nothing is great if than God, & as I read thru each statement I saw that nothing fit for every statement.

  2. This is a tough one. I was hoping to get some hints from other comments! I’ll keep thinking on it…

  3. I believe the answer to this riddle is…. NOTHING! 🙂 Enjoy the riddles. Thank you, Tipper!!

  4. I’ll say “nothing” though I’m mystified why a rich man would want for it. Oh, I see “want for nothing”. I’ll have to study on it some more.

  5. The answer is “nothing”. Just that first line should give you the answer There is nothing greater than God. Hope y’all have a blessed week. Thanks Tipper for sharing.

  6. Of course, that’s “nothing.” Coulda stopped at, What’s greater than God? People use the word, “awesome,” loosely. That’s awesome! when it’s perhaps just something neat. God IS awesome! And He’s doing things RIGHT! We cannot always, maybe even usually, reconcile what is on God’s heart toward us when there’s so much evil in the world. But keep your eye on the prize! And trust all things DO work together for good for those that love Him and are called (still “stuck” in Jude 1; WHY would He call me??? but am glad-understatement- that He did!) according to His purpose!

  7. The answer to the first one is nothing. My kiddos love riddles and jokes right now, I’ll be telling them these two when they’re up and moving!

  8. I’ve got it! The answer is nothing. Nothing is greater than God or worse than the devil. A rich man wants for nothing and a poor person has nothing. Of course if you eat nothing you will starve to death!

  9. I know the answer to this one.
    Nothing
If you ponder it, it truly gets one to thinking how powerful it is.

  10. I think the answer is nothing. The first line says it all because nothing is greater than God.
