Men making music

Pap and Paul sung several Delmore Brothers’ songs. The Delmores wrote some mighty fine songs so it’s easy to see why they liked them.

The Delmores were farm boys from Alabama. Their heyday was in the 1930s and 40s but their songs are still popular today in bluegrass and old time circles.

The bothers played radio shows, were members of the Grand Ole Opry, and were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

I heard our little whippoorwill singing it’s heart out Saturday morning way before daylight. As I laid there listening and thinking of all the things I needed to do I was reminded of the old Delmore Brothers song about whippoorwills in spring.

I don’t know what’s prettier the lyrics the Delmores wrote or the two part harmony Pap and Paul have together.

The two younger boys in this video are mine and Paul’s nephews. The video was filmed 15 years ago when they were both still in school and living at home. I’m so glad they were able to play music with their grandfather and their uncle and I know they are too! And I’m sure thankful for the library of music videos we have that showcases various combinations of my family playing music together.

Pap feeding Paul the lines in certain places makes me smile 🙂

Hope you enjoy the song!

  1. So jealous (in the good way!) of your nephew playing the mandolin. I love the sound but I’m simply hopeless on string instruments (more of a woodwind guy; I play the recorder). I can’t even seem to get my head wrapped around the mountain dulcimer, that’s how bad I am!

  4. What a beautiful song. At the end of the song some thumbnails came up & one was with Paul & Granny singing together. The song was called “How Much Are You Worth” and was posted on April 14, 2023. It was such a beautiful site to see Paul & Granny singing together. I would love, love, love to see more songs like this with Granny included in the singing. Maybe Katie & Corie could get her to sing along with them. What a treasure that would be to be able to look back like we do with Pap & his guitar & singing along with Paul.
