“Hard Times Come Again No More” written by Stephen Foster

Let us pause in life’s pleasures to count its many tears For we all share sorrow with the poor Tis a song that should linger forever in our ears Oh hard times come again no more

Tis a song a sigh of the weary Hard times hard times come again no more Many days you have lingered around our cabin door Oh hard times come again no more

While we seek mirth and beauty and music bright and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices be silent their pleading looks still say Oh hard times come again no more

Tis a song a sigh of the weary Hard times hard times come again no more Many days you have lingered around our cabin door Oh hard times come again no more

Its a song that is wafted across the troubled waves its a wave that is heard upon the shore It’s a dirge that is murmured around a lonely grave Oh hard times come again no more

Tis a song a sigh of the weary Hard times hard times come again no more Many days you have lingered around our cabin door Oh hard times come again no more

There’s a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away With a heart that has seen its better days Though her voice should be merry tis sighing all the day Oh hard times come again no more

Tis a song a sigh of the weary Hard times hard times come again no more Many days you have lingered around our cabin door Oh hard times come again no more

The song “Hard Times Come Again No More” written by Stephen Foster in 1855. Since Foster was a songwriter by trade I’m sure the song was composed with monetary gain in mind, however I’ve read it was also penned because the words directly related to events that were taking place in Foster’s own private life. In other words Foster had fallen on hard times himself.

We used to do the song often when Pap was stilling living. I loved playing a song that was well over a 100 years old and the fact that it still resonated with people made it even better. We all fall on hard times at some point in our lives.

I hope you enjoyed the old song and I sure hope hard times come again no more for you and yours.

Granny is having an invasive test tomorrow. I will greatly appreciate your prayers for her and for the doctors and nurses who will care for her.

I am a Stephen Foster fan also, him having composed Swanee River.
I remember as a child going down to Florida from South Carolina on the old highway, where it said beware of the alligators, it wasn’t uncommon for them to cross the road.
I remember also seeing a sign where the river was spelled Suwanee, a typo by highway dept. or colloquial, I don’t know?
Early morning temp in Oregon is 65 at 9:24 am., will be up to mid 80s today.
    Clear with few questionable clouds.

  10. Although I am intimately familiar with some of Stephen Collins Foster’s other songs, such as the lively “Doo Dah” of “Camptown Races” and “Suwannee,” this song was new to me. The sentiments and the way Paul and Jerry presented them are pure delight.

  13. Good Sunday morning. I agree with Randy about the song “Farther Along”.
It’s hard to understand why things have to be so hard sometimes. I am keeping your Mama in my prayers. —-
“Farther along we’ll know more about it,
    Farther along we’ll understand why;
Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine,
We’ll understand it all by and by.”

It is temporary. Excruciating pain from total knee replacement surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago is just taking me out. I am facing getting the other knee replaced in November just as soon as this one lets me walk good again. Pain I never knew… thanks for sharing this song I’m writing ting it down to keep the words with me to remind myself everybody has hard times worse than mine!

  23. Wow! I’m astounded at just how many people love and are praying for your beloved mother’s return of good health, Tipper and Paul! “Lord I believe, but help my unbelief.” We must have total faith and not waiver knowing if we leave our troubles at the foot of the cross, God is in total control- no matter what May come. All you Wilson’s please know our love, prayers, good thoughts and well wishes surround you all at this difficult time. I know for myself, every day I look forward to being a day closer to heaven and mommy and Bobby who I miss like you wouldn’t believe!!! Further from here and closer to my home is the plan. 25. Praying for wisdom for the doctor, strength and courage for Granny and everyone who loves her.

  26. I’ve never heard of this song until now. It’s odd that the words are sorrowful, but it has an upbeat tune. I guess that’s how we are to treat hard times. Hard times brings sorrow, but trusting in our Lord gives us hope, peace and joy in knowing Him as our Savior. God gives us strength to get through the hard times in life. I’m praying for Granny, you all and I’ll add on her medical team now too. Hugs to you all from across our great NC state.

  27. Paul and Pap always sing well and especially together. I have been praying for Granny and ya all but I will certainly be praying for her tomorrow and the medical team that will be taking care of her.

  28. Praying for Granny and the team that will be performing her procedure. I pray they find what is ailing her, that it is not serious and that she will make a full recovery.

  30. Thank you Tipper. I truly believe that without the hard times we could not even recognize and appreciate the good times.
Praying for Granny and all your family.

  31. At mass we will say, relive us of all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope. I hope you all find a way to enjoy this beautiful day.

  32. I truly enjoyed the song. Thank you! I watched you and yours picking peaches, eating at a great rib place, thrift store shopping at the girls favorite thrift store!!!! So much family fun and great memories made. I will continue to cover your Mom in prayer. God bless you and yours.❤❤

  33. Those “hard times'” the song speaks of can come in the form of worry for our aging loved ones. My mother is 82 and now finds the effort of getting up and getting ready for church on Sunday morning to be too much for her. I never thought I would see that day come. I will pray for both of our mothers and for you and I so we will have patience and strength to deal with whatever comes our way.

  34. We must all experience hard times sometimes because we live in a sin filled world but if trust in Jesus we can go to a place where there will never be any hard times! What a blessed hope. Enjoyed the song and Pap and Paul playing it. Keeping Granny and your family in my prayers.

    1. Praying for Granny and your whole family. And that God will guide the doctors and nurses in all that they do.

  35. Prayers lifted for Granny! And for all of you that love her and are helping her thru her rough time.♥️

  36. Stephen Foster never made much money in the music business. Wrote many songs that people would know today. He died destitute
and all alone in New York City. I’ve always felt that he was never truly appreciated.

    1. There’s a story about how Foster chose the title of “Swannee River.” He got it from a map and changed the spelling from the three-syllable Suwannee to Swannee. He never saw that fabled Florida stream. He had considered the Yazoo and PeeDee
rivers, but kept looking. I’m glad.

  37. Prayers for Granny and for you and your family. God will be there standing beside the doctors guiding them. Stay strong and hold on to God’s word. My prayers will be with you.

  38. Thank you for sharing the video. I enjoyed it. Your family makes beautiful music – thank you for sharing your musical gifts. I’m praying for Granny, for you, and the medical team serving her. May you feel His comfort and assurance.

  39. Great song, my first time hearing it. I will be praying as always for Granny and for God to watch over her and the Doctors. May God’s hands guide all of the caretakers who will be doing what they have to do to bring her back to good health. Love and prayers to and for her. God Bless.

  40. I have never heard this song, I too hope no one is experiencing “hard times”. It’s not the same but I like listening to an another old song “I Won’t Have To Worry Any More” by Dole Lawson and Quicksilver. Before going to bed last night I listened to it. Tipper, I saw the old post of the Girls singing “Will There Be Any Stars” in my crown, we would often sing this song at my church when I was growing up, but it has been many years since I last heard it. I will continue to pray for Granny, you and your family, it seems like y’all have been going through either “hard or worrisome times” lately. I wish there was a way fo me to do more for you.

I have recently heard two different preachers preach about the hard times or troubles and trials we go through, they both said it was God’s way of making our faith stronger. Because we are humans it sometimes hard for us to see it that way. Another old hymn I like that maybe tells about this is “Farther Along”. It sometimes seems like the ones that are trying to live and do right for the Lord have more “hard times” than the ones that don’t care.
