Homemade Waffles

I never cared much for waffles when I was growing up, but that’s likely because the only ones I ever ate came in a box. Not long after Matt and I were married Miss Cindy gave me her waffle maker. She said she no longer used it and thought I might enjoy having it.

It was a good while before I finally decided to try my hand at making waffles. I first used a recipe from the Betty Crocker Cookbook. They were very good and we all decided we liked homemade waffles very much.

Miss Cindy’s maker produces waffles that are on the thin side and shaped like five hearts put together. The girls loved pulling the hearts apart and dipping them in syrup before eating.

I used the Betty Crocker recipe for ages, but one day when I was in a hurry I looked for a recipe that didn’t require beating egg whites separately and then incorporating them. I found this one. And I’ve been making them that way ever since.

  • 2ÂĽ cups all-purpose flour
  • ÂĽ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • Âľ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in one bowl. In another mix milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla.

Mix the two bowls together and follow your waffle maker’s directions and you’ll end up with some yummy waffles.

The recipe makes too many for us to eat at one sitting. I take the leftover waffles and spread them out on a baking sheet. I put them in the freezer and once the waffles are frozen through I put them in a freezer bag and store in the freezer till someone wants one. Sort of like homemade eggo waffles.

  1. We love waffles. I look forward to making some with your recipe. My maker is a round Belgian that divides into 4 sections. Love ya.

  2. My husband loves waffles, it me, I would rather do the pancakes. Have a small waffle maker and not to crazy about cleaning one up. I guess I’m a bit lazy for that. Hope Miss Louzine will have a good day today. My love prayers up for her and y’all. She’s being taken care of by y’all and it’s comforting for her. Everyone have a good and blessed day.

  3. We love waffles, but seem to only make them when the grandkids are visiting. The recipe I use is a sourdough waffle recipe, it’s delicious! Generally, we have them for supper rather than breakfast or like you, I make a batch and freeze them. I hope everyone has a beautiful day and praying for Granny!

  4. I love the heart shaped waffles! My mother had one of the oldest waffle makers I have ever seen and on special occasions, she would make waffles. In cleaning out her things when she passed, I never could find it. It may have just worn out, and she threw it away. In my forty-nine years of marriage, I have never owned a waffle maker. My family rather have pancakes especially at night when I do a breakfast for supper. I just may have to find a waffle maker and try this recipe. They look delicious!

Continued prayers for Granny and all of you.

  5. I never grew up with waffles on the menu so never acquired a taste for them, but my mama would use a similar recipe for pancakes which we had regularly, sometimes for breakfast or if the day got away from her, we’d have them for the evening meal. Mama cooked them in her large cast iron frying pan; served with either bacon, ham or sausages. Oh – and don’t forget the fried eggs!! And of course, with lots of butter and good ole maple syrup. She always made extra’s as we all loved them cold and then used as bread, making a peanut butter and homemade jam or jelly ‘sandwich.’ I carried on doing this into my own family.

  6. I bought a waffle maker a few years ago. I use it for all kinds of things. After Thanksgiving, I put stuffing in there, and use the stuffing ‘waffle’ as the base of a wonderful leftover dinner. I also use it for little fried potato waffles. Those are great as a base for eggs Benedict. I will be trying your waffle recipe soon. Thanks for always inspiring me!!!

  7. First waffle I and my future wife had was Belgian waffles at the NY Worlds Fair.. a waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. 99 cents in 1965. A bargain and something to remember for the rest of our lives. we were both 17 and on our senior trip to NYC. I don’t remember when I had another but it was many years later. I had a box waffle for breakfast this morning. Too lazy to cook them. Oh and we didn’t date until 4 years later after college.

  8. It’s been sometime since I’ve made homemade waffles with my small waffle maker. Last time I made them I did a huge batch which took a long time because my waffle maker is actually a single serving size. I did the huge batch so I could freeze them. Then when my husband and I wanted waffles all I had to do was take a few out of the freezer and pop them in the toaster. They were the perfect size for our toaster, like the ones in the store, but taste way better. I knew what ingredients I put in my batter! I know it would be so much easier if I bought a big waffle maker but honestly I have no where to store it, so I’ll stick with just using my single waffle maker and make big batches to freeze.
Tipper your heart waffle maker is so cute and your waffles look delicious! Great recipe too! Now you’ve gone and done made us all want waffles!

  9. Tipper,
that’s the same recipe my mother in law gave me 40 years ago! My kids would go over to her house every day for pancakes at Grandma Betty’s. there was one house between our houses. she always kept some mixed up in the icebox. wonderful memories!

  10. Have you ever tried Belgian waffles? My sister gave me a Belgian waffle iron one year for Christmas and I love it. I use the Kruteaz brand of waffle mix. The waffles turn out thick and fluffy on the inside with a crispy exterior. We like them with bacon

    1. A friend made Belgian waffles one morning, and they were precisely as you described. I remember the meal mostly because of the thickness and lightness of those airy waffles.

  11. My grandkids love it when I make waffles !! I use the same recipe as well. When I was a kid – when we had waffles, my dad always included a dip of vanilla ice cream – which was pure heaven.

I know your little guys will enjoy pulling apart those waffles too.

Prayers for Granny and you all as well.

  12. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Maybe one day I’ll try it but for now, since I live alone, I’ll stick with the Waffle House!!

    Continued prayers for everyone.

  13. Well Good Morning to you all! Those waffles are really the prettiest waffles I ever saw in my whole life! I like the idea of them being thin and homemade because we ALL know homemade is better and tastier. I’d like to think mother or daddy’s food made from loving hands adds that extra touch. Tipper, those are waffle winners if there is a contest! I’ve never been into pancakes or waffles. If it ain’t bacon and fried taters, it ain’t breakfast to me. And what about sausage gravy and biscuits? Lol. I got no taste for fruit or bread like stuff for breakfast. My baby brother makes SOS (you know what on the shingles) or chipped beef alot for breakfast. Lol I got moved-it only took about 2 weeks after the house sold in WV to get into the one here in VA. Let me just say living in the country is different. First of all, you can hear a neighbor far off just talking. I guess they think I’m in “battle axe” mode. Lol I hear sheep, cows, chickens, coyotes and the Lord only knows what and it’s way better than a city sounds. I sat yesterday morning watching the birds and fog lift sipping coffee and I thought perhaps this is my sweetest time in my life…wait on it and believe it and it will come in time…the next move I hope and pray is to the cemetery for me…have a good day all you acorns!!! It’s great to be here.

  14. I didn’t grow up having waffles only pancakes. My husband’s mother made them for their family, but he rarely asks me to make them even though we have a waffle/pancake machine that is easy to use. It will cook the waffles lightly, medium or with a crusty exterior. I don’t like heavy foods for breakfast but usually have black coffee, one piece of bacon and a hardboiled egg or only black coffee. I can’t taste the coffee since having the Covid virus in 2021 and I love it.

  15. My girls (grown) and I have been working on freezer meals for our respective households. We’re going to have to give these a whirl!

  16. I had waffles yesterday! My wife shakes her head and grins as I pop the hot-thick waffles from the iron and then gob on large scoops of Mayfield vanilla ice cream and then add a “couple” of heaping tablespoons of her homemade strawberry freezer jam! That combination is Heavenly! The recipe you posted for homemade waffles is almost identical to the one I use. I will say it again. They are delicious. I don’t believe I had ever heard of or seen a waffle until the “Let go of my Eggo” and Aunt Jemima Waffle Whiffers waffle commercials came along in the early 70s.??? Of course, I eventually talked my mother into buying some and trying them. That was the extent of my waffle eating until after I left home. We rarely even had pancakes growing up at our house, but loved them when we did. We were of the grits, sawmill and grease gravy, eggs, and any variation of breakfast pork-eating folks. I never saw my mother or daddy eat a waffle. I am not sure how “Appalachian waffles” are, but I know I like these using this recipe. I guess I was a teenager before I went into a Waffle House (still not one in the county where I live today). We do have an electric waffle iron that my parents gave us for Christmas 40 years or so ago. It is a heavy-duty type made by Krupp. I believe they are one of the same companies that built the German 88 anti-aircraft guns in WW2! LOL. Anyhow, the iron is a goodun’. I am pretty “Appalachian” so, I suppose the waffle iron has been “grandfathered” into Appalachian culture by now, at least at our house. LOL

  17. Sounds delicious!!! I’ll have to put my apron on and make some this week.
And, that’s good info about the Pioneer mix from Randy. I’ll have to give that a try. Lifting all of you in prayer, but especially Granny.

  18. Heartwarming to me to see the tall amber glass holding the milk in your photo. I bought the same pattern when I set up housekeeping in 1968, in three different sizes. I later bought the same pattern in green and in clear glass to save for my granddaughters. I also have the green pitcher displayed on the top of your cabinet. It’s all collectible now, and I still love it!

  19. Perfect timing as I found a cast iron waffl iron for the stove and can’t wait to try it!
❤️ and prayers for all and Granny!

  20. We love homemade waffles, but I hate cleaning up my waffle iron after using it. The way the darn thing is made, cleanup is a real pain. I really need to go buy one that would be easier to clean, but the one I have is a gift from my daughter, so that makes it hard for me to buy another one. At the time she gave it to me, she knew I wanted one all those years ago, but neither her or my husband realized how difficult cleaning it would be. It has a lot of nooks and crannies that are hard to clean out. So the moral of the story, I do use it and we love homemade waffles!!!

  21. When my kids were home I made them with a beaten egg white recipe and it took a while but was really good. I just might try this one for myself since I rarely make waffles any more. Thanks. Pancakes and waffles freeze well. Miss Cindy sure was generous. How fortunate for your family.

  22. I don’t guess this would be considered homemade, but I make waffles and pancakes using both the recipe and Pioneer biscuit mix. It is like Bisquick but I like Pioneer better. There are seldom any leftovers when three men dive in. I always cook bacon or sausage to go along with them. I had rather fix pancakes cooking them on an electric griddle than waffles and a waffle iron, pancakes are quicker.

  23. Dear sweet Miss Cindy….so thoughtful to give you the waffle iron. And the waffles are so pretty! I use almost the same recipe but always add freshly grated nutmeg….and heavy on the vanilla. God bless you all. Praying for all of you, but especially Granny.
