It is late on July 4th and I have just read all the comments. Now I encourage every Acorn to search and read The American’s Creed, written by William Tyler Page. I memorized it as a boy, and can still recite it. I wish it was taught at home and at school. At least, we could post a copy somewhere for kids to read.
Happy 250th Independence Day to these great United States of America and to all “the Acorns”. Thankful to the One who sets souls free and the freedom we celebrate today, and everyday! May we never forget nor take it for granted.

Despite that good advice, I must say that I’m proud to be an American. I am thankful that my ancestor, John Hutchins of Towcester, Northamptonshire, England, left that country in 1634 and came to the colony of Virginia. I’m proud to say that my g-g-g-grandfather, Thomas Hutchins, fought in the Continental Army that defeated the British and created our great nation.

Robert, I was reminded this morning just how young our nation is when I realized that I have lived well past a third of 250 years. Our republic is a grand and an exceptional experiment.

Today my mind goes back 50 years ago, July 4, 1976. In my hometown Lake City, TN, a time capsule was buried with items from families who wanted to participate. and of course I definitely wanted too! The capsule was buried underneath a gazebo. Several years later the gas company building was built and the gazebo was torn down. The capsule supposed to be in the town’s museum but cannot be found. Maybe someday the capsule will be found for the next generation of my family. That would be amazing!! Thankful to celebrate this day and live in this great nation called America!

Happy Two-Fifty!!! We are so blessed! On Memorial Day, the 4th, and Labor Day, I remember going to the Boothton River (now I know it was actually part of the Coosa River) at the ford for picnics. The coal mines at Boothton closed when I was 5 or 6, but the family continued to go back for those holidays. Even though the homes and stores had been demolished, the huckleberry plants, blackberry and muscadine vines were still hanging in there. Miss those days and especially miss all my family.
Happy 4th of July to ya all! I love my country and I don’t take it for granted as I’ve had many family members serve in the military back under George Washington on up through all the recent wars. Some never made it back home and gave their lives so we could live free. I had some ancestry that were signers of the declaration of independence and knew that once they signed it, it could be their death warrant. It even makes this 250 birthday really special to me. God Bless America!

Happy 250th Independence Day!
I can relate & confirm everything Tricia said as I grew up in the 1950’s and we were taught to respect our parents, teachers, law officers and others and yes, we got spankings. If we got into trouble at school, we got in much more trouble at home when the parents found out. At school we pledged allegiance to the flag, said the Lord’s Prayer, and bullying was not allowed at all. Actually, I don’t remember witnessing any bullying. The internet has been both a curse & blessing, but I believe it is more of a curse. Men & Women were proud to serve in the military & the American people respected them, honored them and thanked them. For some reason all of these good things have changed for the worse and I may add, “how has that worked out for us?”

As a former elected official in city in which I live, I know the importance of “the vote”. We celebrate, appropriately, Independence Day. The Declaration of Independence was publically announced on July 4th. But the adoption of the document itself, the vote, was two says earlier on July 2nd. Let us never forget the courage of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. each of them knew that by voting yes, and then affirming their vote by putting their name to paper, tgey were, in fact, signing their own Death Warrant. They pledged to each other, their Lives, their Fortunes, and their Sacred Honor. Thankyou, gentlemen. And may we never take for granted the power and the privilege of,
“the vote”. Happy Independence Day.

Sallie, it is ok with me for Tipper to give you my contact information. I would like to know more about this couple. My father in law would tell about shooting 22 cal rim fire cartlidge in an anvil when they were young boys. They would put them them in the small holes on the anvil and then hit them with a hammer. I don’t think this is the same thing as the anvil shoots.
Happy 4th of July everyone! We are celebrating our 250 th birthday as a nation and I’m a proud American. I love my country. I stood every morning in school and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. No one complained or rebelled by keeping seated or walking out of the room. It just wasn’t done. We were taught about the sacrifices our forefathers had given and taught by our teachers and parents to appreciate and love the United States. We also heard about God in school. My family didn’t attend church until I was almost twelve years old. My second grade teacher, Miss Robinson, would ask the class every Monday morning, “How many of you went to Sunday School and Church yesterday?” Everyone raised their hands including me even though I did not go. I was ashamed that I didn’t. This same teacher taught the class “The Lord’s Prayer.” I never thought I would see the day where people would hate being an American. I thank God that I live in a free country. It is no longer the same as when I was growing up in the late fifties and sixties but God is still in control and I put my trust and faith in Him and His Son Jesus Christ.
Tricia, my 3rd grade teacher in 1963 would read some Bible verses and then say a prayer each morning before the start of our 1 room class. The class would all say a blessing together before going to eat lunch. Later on her granddaughter became the principal of the same school, I remember her saying one year before the start of the school’s Christmas Program “I am told I can no longer pray, but I am going to do it anyway.” The audience gave her a standing up ovation at the end of her prayer and nothing was ever done about it. Nowadays God is trying to being taken out of everything and we wonder why American has became what it is.

Happy 4th of July to everyone. It is going to be another hot one in my area, near 100 degrees. Like Tipper, I am glad to be an American, the icing on the cake is being born and raised in the south. I am teasing when I say that, I have had many good friends from the north in my lifetime. Seriously, I have had many people (a lot of them Military) tell me after going to other countries you realize just how blessed we are in America.
